This my favorite Tom Petty song. A Beatles fan from way back, I was introduced to Tom Petty with this song at age 50 when I mentioned it to my teenage daughters as a new Bob Dylan song. To which I was informed "Mom, that's Tom Petty"! Who's that, isn't he a race car driver? I was assured that he was an established rocker when my daughters gave me their CD's to listen to. I promptly fell in love with Tom Petty and so many of his songs, relevant and beautifully tuneful. Some have very special meaning that I have attached to each of my daughters and bring tears to me when I hear them, or even speak their lyrics. I also felt an affinity with Tom as we are nearly the same age, and shared an October birthday. I was devastated at his early, untimely death, and that there will be no more beautiful, meaningful songs to come from his brilliance and ability to touch people's hearts with them. I feel robbed at the time lost, not knowing he was making these songs for so many years. I'm still finding "new" old songs that I didn't know were out there, from UTube and Tom's XM Radio station. I have come to realize that most people, including Tom, do not like "Echo". I cannot understand why, as it is "the song" that opened my eyes to (in my opinion) the best composer, singer, and performing artist in my lifetime.
The ECHO album is fantastic! Tom eventually grew to love it after his wife talked him into really listening to it on a long car drive....she kept saying " now just listen , really listen.....
I believe Tom Petty said the "Echo" album was written while he was going through divorce & a heroin addiction. Still it doesn't mean there aren't great songs on it. It's in my top 3 albums of theirs. I saw them on this tour in 1999. It was great & he did a brief acoustic set also. R.I.P. Tom Petty
Maybe, just maybe there will come a day I can listen again to Tom without tears. But if there is, it hasn't arrived yet. Some losses are so huge you just don't get "over" them..

I think of and miss Tom every day..He was a strong influence on my musical make up in so many ways..I was a Singer/songwriter for two decades before I came to deeply appreciate his creations..Of course Full Moon Fever drew me into his musical world and caused me to look at myself and my songs and realize that he could possibly have been like a Brother to me for there were things about us that had similarities...I also found that performing his songs come relatively naturally..Our vocal tonality is somewhat similar and his writing style as well..The big difference is I’ve not had that kind of make up in drive and fortitude to never give up in the powerfully exhausting world of the music business..Plus the business is radically different in this age..I’ve started a CZcams channel recently to just throw my songs out there from my songroom for fun in sharing..Plus being in a fun cover band with my band of brothers is quite fulfilling! I eternally thank Tom Petty for his inspirations that just simply will continue through the rest of this mans life!..God Bless you Tom!

After reading TP biography by Warren Zanes I appreciated his music so much more. Each album chronicles his life. Whether it was about the girl that rejected him, fighting his record label or the divorce from his first wife they all tell a story. RIP Tom.

I thank you Tom for the lovely music that brought healing after the loss of my daughter in 2003. She was only 24. You stopped me from self destruct, you're such a "Skillful Writer" The song. Like ...
