How Big Is T.rex? Calculating An Average T.rex Size

  • Theropod dinosaurs bigger than T.rex may be out there, but the giant T.rex won't give up its crown as the biggest theropod dinosaur yet. This video uses GDI calculations to reveal the average size of T.rex by using the largest T.rex specimens as well as the smallest T.rex skeletons. You can use the calculation of an average T.rex size to compare in a dinosaur size comparison if T.rex was the biggest meat-eating dinosaur.

    Sigilmassasaurus probably doesn't even exist. It is about as vague as Oxalaia. Right now, all we have of sigilmassasaurus are a couple of vertebrae. And it is much more likely that sigilmassasaurus is of spinosaurus than the other way around. Even if sigilmassasaurus turned out to be different, MSNM v4047 will still be Spinosaurus because Spinosaurus is that specimen. It was the first spino specimen found, so it stays with the dinosaur. So if MSNM v4047 is found to be same as sigilmassasaurus, the current sigilmassasaurus bones would be grouped with spinosaurus, making sigilmassasaurus an invalid genus, not the other way around.

    • @svenheuseveldt7188
      @svenheuseveldt7188 Před 5 lety

      Is it though? I believe Evers dedicated a whole paper proving Sigilmassasaurus brevicollis to be it's own species in 2015.
      "Sigilmassasaurus brevicollis shows several autapomorphies and a suite of unusual features otherwise known only in Ichthyovenator. It is retained herein as a valid taxon, and a synonymy with Spinosaurus aegyptiacus is rejected."
      peerj.com/articles/1323/
      And the original remains found of S.eagyptiacus is IPHG 1912, not MSNM-v4047. So we don't know if MSNM-v4047 belongs to S.eagyptiacus or S.brevicollis.

      VIPERTRON CHAOS that is absolutely right
      And by the way spinosaurs could’ve gotten even much heavier because of the abundance of food supplies in it’s area
      And also the restoration of it being a quadruped is physically wrong because think about a huge animal like this might topple down and break some limbs
      So I believe that spinosaurus could’ve reached lengths over 16 m
      And maybe just maybe over 9 tons or at least 6 to 7

      Nothing is official about spinosaurus size.
      He agrees woth arden et al who suggested that the specimen nsnm v4047 actually belongs to sigilmassasaurus and not spinosaurus.
      If this is treu(which vividen does apperently) then yes, spinosaurus is around 12 meters long and around 3.5 tonnes, if not then its around 7 tonnes by franoys.

      @svenheuseveldt7188 Před 5 lety +7

      but to awnser you question,
      spinosaurus was very lightly build, the greater bone density plays a very small role, despite what people might say.
      its torso wasn't particularry deep or broad, its hind limbs where proportionally small, the skull was very lightly build weighing "only" ~140 kg while t.rex skull was 500+ kg! (im using NSNM v4047, not FSAC kk 11888)
      and you might think the sail adds a lot but it was only estimated to be ~250 kg for NSNM-v4047... but like i said, this might not belong to spinosaurus.
      the sail of FSAC kk 11888 would be around ~150-200 kg im guessing.
      this ads up to an animal which might not weigh as much as you would think if its 12 to 15 meters long.
      here you have the GDI results of NSNM-v4047, keep in mind this animal is 3 meters longer and weighs more then 2 tonnes less the Seu by hartman and snively's calculations
      cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/226476069128110080/463482369270349825/SpinosaurusGDI2.png
      and again, this might be to big and it might not, depends on if it actually belongs to spinosaurus in the first place,
      FSAC kk 11888 was a sub adult was weight around ~3,1 tonnes and was only 11,4 meters long

      @@svenheuseveldt7188 Thanks so much for the info! That Spinosaurus could be 3.5 tonnes or 7 tonnes highlights a central challenge in paleontology, and a video that covers the ground you went over in the comment above would be great. Especially as we constantly hear that Spinosaurus was "the largest theropod." Thanks probably to Jurassic Park III. My own introduction to Spinosaurus came in a wonderful book I still have, "The Dinosaur Data Book," published in 1990. In it Spinosaurus is described as "perhaps the longest but not heaviest of all theropods." That description seems to be holding up pretty well.

    SV-POW says the laser scanning method used in A Computational Analysis of Limb and Body Dimensions in Tyrannosaurus rex with Implications for Locomotion, Ontogeny, and Growth is more accurate since it's actually measuring the skeleton. I can't find it anymore since it was a reply to my comment in their site... somewhere.
    The holotype is a very incomplete specimen. The skull is restored from several different specimens. Not saying it's bad, just not even close to being complete.
    AMNH 5027's height can't be trusted since it's a mix of T.rex and scaled up Allosaurus legs.
    MOR 980 is pretty a decent skeleton. I don't recall any weight estimates, but it's around 12 meters.
    Don't know if I trust Samson's numbers since it's in private hands and never officially documented. The number come from an auction site.
    King Kong is relatively complete according to Terry Glenn Ciotka. It's also in private hands. I THINK it's in Hong Kong. No numbers. I think Terry says it's around 40 feet or 12.1 with a bone count of around 45% complete. Terry is also responsible for excavating Tristan.
    Victoria is coming, though according to Terry Glenn Ciotka (yes, they found another one) it's not fully grown, but already very close to Sue in terms of size. Victoria is very complete. Tons of paleontologists have been studying it behind the scenes for at least a year now.
    Weight estimates are tricky. Too many variables. We can't even tell you exactly how long Sue is (you say 12.35, official published paper says 12.29 and Dave Hone believes another meter of the tail is missing) , let alone factor in things like muscles, organs, fat, skin, blood, and among other factors in an extinct animal.

    - OLD Estimates published in 2005, 2007, and 2008 suggested that it was between 12.6-18 metres (41-59 ft) in length and 7 to 20.9 tonnes (7.7 to 23.0 short tons) in weight.[2][3][4]
    - NEW estimates published in 2014 and 2018 based on a more complete specimen, supported the earlier research, finding that Spinosaurus could reach lengths of 15-16 m (49-52 ft).[5][6][7] The latest estimates suggest a weight of 6.4-7.5 tonnes (7.1-8.3 short tons).[6][7]
    Tyrannosaur Rex:
    Tyrannosaurus rex was one of the largest land carnivores of all time. One of the largest and the most complete specimen, nicknamed Sue(FMNH PR2081), is located at the Field Museum of Natural History. Sue measured 12.8 meters (42 ft) long,[2][3] was 3.66 meters (12 ft) tall at the hips,[4] and according to the most recent studies, using a variety of techniques, estimated to have weighed between 8.4 metric tons (9.3 short tons) to 14 metric tons (15.4 short tons).[3][5] A specimen nicknamed Scotty (RSM P2523.8), located at the Royal Saskatchewan Museum, is reported to measure 13 m (43 ft) in length.

Out of all the specimens we have to take into account they were all likely average. current estimates say there were probably 2.5 billion trex allive at one point. If we're taking this into account the chances that these specimens deviate outside of 1 or 2 standard deviations is low. meaning these could be the average sized ones and not necessarily the largest of their species.

    I love these accurate dinosaurs, the info on this will come in handy when I use it.
    I only have one question, how is spinosaurus only 3.5 tons despite being 12 meters long and having a barrel shape body( more so then t.rex, but I'm not here to start that) with denser bones then other therapods, as they spend most of their time in or near water?
    I just find it confusing since I saw spinosaurus being around 5-6 tons or to make a specific range 5.4-6.2 tons then the average siligamasaurus would weigh 6.5-7.8 tons. Those are minimum to maximum so let me state the averages spinosaurus weighs 6 tons for males and 5.4 for females then siligamasaurus weighs 6.5 tons for females and 6.8 tons for males then for T.Rex the average would be 7.5-8 tons for females then 6.8-7 tons for males. I just want some clarification on this and these are my honest estimates for the average sizes.

People these days beleive everything they read. Also sigilmassasaurus isn't bigger than Spinosaurus. MSNM v4047 does not belong to Sigilmassasaurus, as that was yet another theory. All of this is about as accurate as the quadrupedal Spinosaurus theory back in 2014.

    Very interesting and informative video. I'm very curious about one particular aspect of T rex's anatomy, the height. Do you consider the height at the hips as the highest point of the real animal? Or its head might actually have been a bit higher due to its posture? For many years I've heard many documentaries claiming that T rex could reach heights of about 5-6m tall! Yet if we consider all of the T rex's fossil record, none of the specimens surpasses the 4m barrier...

    • @svenheuseveldt7188
      @svenheuseveldt7188 Před 5 lety +1

      I believe it works differently.
      We can actually muessure the lenght up to thier hips. Where as if we want to muessure how high its head would be we would have to make it posture first. And thats made up by us. Maybe only by a few inches but therefore(i beleive) we muessure by hip height and not head.

    • @trvth1s
      @trvth1s Před 4 lety

      It is all based on the posture the animal takes.
      Your normal walking posture is one thing but on tip toes you get a bit taller.
      Trex being theropod is a bit different, ALL theropoda naturally have a vertical stance. When terrestrial theropoda today fight [emu, ostrich] they adapt a more vertical stance which makes them taller and more intimidating.
      Trex at the hip was around 4 meters tall but if it got into a vertical stance, its tail would be on the ground for added stability, and its height would drastically increase. This stance was not practical for the animal walking but it would definetly make it look bigger and give it major height advantage against most anything.

    Everyone is so obsessed with hip height anymore. They could obviously raise their heads a few feet higher. How tall are Scotty and Sue going by the tops of their skulls?

    • @svenheuseveldt7188
      @svenheuseveldt7188 Před 5 lety +1

      That's exactly why we meassure thier hip height. You can't change how long thier legs and hips were whereas you can change how far thier heads were off of the ground by reasing it's head or lowering it. For this reasons we use hip height as a mueassure of height and not the head. Hope you understand. We also don't know for sure how far of the ground they held thier heads so it's also impossible to know for sure except guess a hieght...

      Toostig that makes sense. Guess that explains why some skeleton reconstructions have their heads level with their body while others have them 3 feet above like a bird would

      Toostig I guarantee Scotty and Sue aren’t the max size either. T rexes were around millions of years and we only have 50 found individuals and about 10 nearly complete skeletons. There are probably some absolutely massive rexes still to be found

    • @svenheuseveldt7188
      @svenheuseveldt7188 Před 5 lety

      @@bradysmith4245 Oh for sure, we barely scratched the surfase of how big these animals could have gotten. Persons et al. 2019 also siad that these animas grew to vastly bigger sizes then we're realising right now and than what we know right now. It's only a matter of time until we find a specimen which rivales Sue in size or is even bigger than Sue. And Scotty seems to be the first contender.
      Just for an example. The average African elephant is ~5 to 7 tonnes and the biggest individual ever seen is 10,4 tonnes. That's an increase in size of 73%... If we apply this to the average T.rex specimen(Stan) which is 7,7 tonnes we get an answer of 13,3 tonnes!
      But this is just an example and should be taken with a grain of salt. But it does go to show specimen over 10 tonnes, maybe even 11, lived for sure... But it also goes the other way round ;) Very small individuals would also be a thing xD

    The weight of an average full grown T-Rex was around 5000 kg which is very close to the weight of an average size full-grown elephant. However, an average full-grown elephant is about 3.2 meters high and 6 meters long and an average full-grown T-Rex is about 3.6 meters high and 12 meters long. So the T-Rex may have been very heavy, yes, but he was very very light in weight for his size.
    An empty DC-9 airplane weighs in at 22.3 thousand kg and can fly. So the empty DC-9 weighs more than 4 times the weight of a fully grown T-Rex. If attached to the T-Rex's upper limbs were very long primary and secondary feathers we see that they were probably wings. And with being very light for his size, he probably could fly. The T-Rex was a very large and beautiful bird!
    Also it is well known that T-Rex was a theropod, but all modern-day birds are theropods, so there really is not much difference at all between T-Rex and modern-day birds. T-Rex was a big, beautiful bird and could fly!

      No really true, there is no evidence to say which was larger, but if we go off their modern relatives, you will see that aside from a few species, the males are always larger, for both birds and reptiles. So it is more likely the males were bigger, but who knows until we have more evidence its up for debate, I still think males were bigger thought. :)
