  • Eliminate your tension headache and neck tightness with these 4 simple exercises you can do right at home! Physical therapy exercises for your neck and posture to eliminate tension headache pain. Read more for links and details!
I seem to be treating a lot more patients lately with complaints of tension headaches and neck pain.
People are spending more and more time on their computers and cell phones with poor posture and these days seem to be a little more stressful than times have been in the past.
Tension headaches are often diagnosed as a headache pain in the head that comes from pain/tension in the neck. Often times these headaches start in the back of the head right at the base of the skull and creep up and over either one half or both halves of your skull.
There are many factors that cause these tension headaches. Anything that causes increased strain on the small muscles in the top of your neck can lead to tension and stiffness in this area. The tension/stiffness from these small muscles puts pressure on nerves that exit your cranium right in this same area. The result of this pressure on these nerves is what causes your tension headache pain.
The most-common cause of tension headaches that I see is computer/desk jobs. We spend long days seated (something we’re not structurally designed to do anyway), we’ve got laptops and phones that are never at the right height, and we round forward at our shoulders to reach our keyboards and mice. It’s a horrible position to be in for your body; let alone for 8+ hours/day!
Luckily, there is a lot of the right stretches and exercises can do to alleviate the tension in these muscles, decrease the pressure on your nerves, and help your headache to feel much better.
In this video you will learn four of the best exercises to stretch these muscles and decrease tension headache pain. These are simple exercises that can be done anywhere with no equipment needed.
Now whenever I treat anyone for anything in my physical therapy clinic, my goal is always two-fold:
    1. Treat the pain to help the patient feel better
    2. Treat the cause of the pain so it does not return.
That said, my goals with this video are to show you the right stretches to decrease neck tension/pain and the right exercises to improve postural strength. Decreasing neck pressure and pain will help alleviate your headache pain; improving neck/postural strength will keep the headache from returning in the future.
Time stamps to each of the exercises is included below for you convenience. Also be sure to check out the videos below the timestamps for additional help with your headache/neck pain and posture.

It has helped relieve so much tension in my neck. I don't remember the last time i felt this relaxed. I'm gonna do these exercises everyday. I'm 18 and I start college next week and I thought i wouldn't have been able to perform as well given the headaches. But this has given me some hope. Maybe there's a way to be good again. Hey man, I just watched your video on pinched nerves in the neck, did your exercises, and they already show their first effects.
      I got 2 questions however.
      1. My doc and physio therapist are sure (without imaging technologies) that a blocked vertebrae is the cause of the pinched nerve. My question: Can this really be possible? Because I am still very much scared it could be a herniated disc or so, as my arms and legs tingle, hurt, sometimes feel somewhat numb and weak and my vertebrae area hurts.
      2. Question: If it really is a pinched nerve and it is "just" a vertebrae blockage... How long can this take until the nerve fully regenerates and stops fricking beating the s*** out of me and my psych?
Edit: The area which hurts is in the thorax part of the spine by the way.

      @joannehughes6082 Před rokem

@@lycaondoug hi - I did all four together, really concentrating on feeling the stetch, slowly getting into the stretch and pulling it so that I couldnt extend that muscle any further. I found it hard doing tge stretches because my neck was so tense and rickerty, especially the pillowcase one, but I stayed in the stretch, really focused on streching and relieving the tension, to the point it hurt, but it felt good because I knew I was really stretching for tgat tension to escape. I think the combination of extending the neck muscles (which my poor posture had overloaded) and stretching out the back posture muscle is what has worked.
Im also trying to be more careful now of my posture as I walk, sit, work at the computer. Im probably on doing this 50% of the time though.
Ive still not had a headache so this has been a miracle cure for me. I must have had so much built up tension.

@@DiamondranchfarmsteadI’m having that right now 😣 I been having on and off headache for about 3 to 4 days that comes and goes but today it is sooo bad. It is so bad I felt like I might faint. I don’t usually take any pain meds unless I really can take the pain. So I took Tylenol about an hour ago and I still have a headache but not as bad as it was but it’s horrible. I usually get like if my head is being squeezed or like it’s going to explode 🤯 and my neck hurts too. Even my face will hurt too. The headache pain is pretty much in my whole head. Sometimes when I bend the pressure gets worse too so I try to stay still and relax. I put cold water all over my face and neck and that helps a little. I also get a little dizzy. It’s crazy. I have suffered from really bad headaches for about 6 years now but I never thought about going to the doctors until now. It’s horrible. Idk if it’s migraine what I have or tension headache. These headaches don’t allow me to do pretty much anything. I also have a anxiety and panic disorder so idk ifs related to that

Hey Jared. Been having bad tension headaches and jaw clenching every day, feeling like my head was in a vice. At first I thought the headaches were just from jaw clenching but after a bit of education (including this video) I found that both are likely caused by prolonged sitting, poor posture, stress, shallow breathing and muscle tightness in other parts of the body. Day two of doing these exercises and so far they seem to be working. In fact I felt the onset of a headache after sitting for four hours today and thwarted it with these stretches. Sincere gratitude!
Few questions about the chin tuck. When doing them I feel an intense stretch from the tips of my shoulders down to my forearm, is that normal? Also feel the urge to slightly arch my back off the floor while tucking, that ok or try to keep back flat against the floor? Last question: the tucks somewhat obstruct breathing, hold breath or try to breathe through them?
