I call the Mick Taylor years, the classic era of the Stones.
Mick Taylor replaced Peter Green (who replaced Eric Clapton) in John Mayall's Bluebreakers and replaced Brian Jones in The Rolling Stones. When he left The Stones unexpectedly in 1974, Mick Jagger was sorely disappointed. Basically, Keith and Mick Taylor didn't get along. After Ronnie Wood joined after Taylor's departure, as Jagger pointed out, they never had that kind of melodic, fluid guitarist in their band ever again. Love the pick Cosmo. Thanks Harri.

I was in the audience .Yes it was that incredible. Good picking up on the Hendrix influence. MT said Hendrix was his favourite guitarist.
Mick Taylor was just a young kid and he gave the stones something they never had before. Kieth Richard was not amused and got so jealous that he decided to get the young guitar virtuoso strung out on heroine. That is what happened and soon Mick Taylor was not a part of their scene. He found himself playing behind Dylan and many others but lost his opportunities to create great music.
Yeah, Mick felt like if he stayed he would end up like Brian Jones. Also like Brian he was upset that his songwriting efforts weren't credited. He wrote and co-wrote a number of songs that were always credited to Mick and Keith alone.

Cosmo Kramer? That was the role Michael Richards played on Seinfeld. I saw Mick Taylor with the Stones at the Altamont Concert in December, 1969. He was without a doubt the best guitarist they ever had . . . gave them a harder edge. Keith was a great rhythm player and created most of the Stones' great riffs, but Mick was the only real lead guitarist they had. This version of Gimme Shelter is the best I've heard . . . hope I can find this recording. I'm not sure why he wasn't with the Stones for long, but I always wondered if MIc Jagger didn't like attention being drawn away from him.

Insightful reaction! As to the recording itself, though, I almost turned it off at first because of the sound quality. Then I started really hearing what Mick Taylor was doing, and then that solo! I'm glad I stuck around. Mick is a really great player!
This was obviously an audience recording. But I collected this stuff for about 20 years through tradign and downloading, if the recordigns are good, like this one, they capture the feel of the show unlike any soundboard recording. Hell, Mick's guitar sounds like it's plugged into the recorder. They are pieces of history captured, even if they don't sound that good. This one is amazing for 1972, and the equipment peopel had to bring intoa concert to get one this good.

you should checkout Winter off Goats Head Soup. I saw Mick with his own band at a bar in the 90s. He played about a 15min version of Winter .. blew my mind.
With Taylor the Stones entered the age of guitar heroes with their very own virtuoso that could rival anyone.
This is not only the greatest version of the band, but the greatest version of any band ever. There’s nothing better than Taylor soloing over great Jagger/Richards compositions.

Mick Taylor was/is an incredible lead guitarist. Keith is the best all time rhythm guitarist and the two of them together are just pure magic - best Stones era hands down!
Mate, if you're delving into the Stones live stuff, you should definitely look at the Live in Texas 1978 and Hampton 1981 stuff. Loads of great performances there including Let's Spend The Night Together, Shattered, Beast Of Burden, Let It Bleed and so on.
From the Mick Taylor era Brussels Affair 1973 is pretty close to the best the Stones ever got.

I also like the 1973 London version that you can also find on CZcams. For a clean video with live performance you can find it on the 1972 version from Ladies and Gentlemen: the Rolling Stones which is also great. The Stones were at the pinnacle at their powers in 1972/73.

Taylor's playing was undeniably great on the 72 tour, but so was Keith's. I'm glad you recognized the intensity of what he was doing. It often get's overlooked due to Taylor, but it's as great in its own way.

One of my favorite versions. Intense. Those were the days when magic roamed the stages of rock music. Another good version is London 1973, which is much better quality.
The London '73 audio quality is noticeably better, but the Philly '72 performance is noticeably better. I went with performance.
I never could get into the Rolling Stones until I head Let It Bleed. Peak Stones era.

Hello Bestie! Get ready to hear one of my favorite songs of all time that I grew up with! That's what I used to have a 3 octave range before my vocal cords with damaged by someone. I used to perform the song with my brothers band! I hope you're ready to have your ears blessed! I saw the rolling Stones back when they did the Steel Wheels
tour. They had an AMAZING drum band that they brought over from Africa... But I forget what that name was. I'm sure you can look up the performance of his at Madison Square Garden. It actually was a triple bill because Lenny Kravitz also opened up for them when he first started! WE HAD 8TH ROW CENTER TICKETS! My Popo it was four years older than me was one of the hugest fans of The Rolling Stones. Sadly he was ill and couldn't make it to go with us that day so it was just his three kids. Also my ex-fiance and a 1 of my brothers friends. We had such an awesome time! Back then the weren't phones with camera capabilities on them. So when this song came on what we did is called our father and we just held up the phone so he can hear it playing! Let me hop back on the phone with him and he was like that was the best thing I've heard in a long time thank you for sharing that with me!

Hendrix. Interesting. The chord structures of "Gimme Shelter" and "All Along The Watchtower" are similar, just shifted up two frets from B to C#. I've heard the song so many times, by the Stones, by others, and jamming on it myself with friends that I can almost see what they're playing. Taylor's parts are front in the mix, but Richards' parts are interesting too. Taylor starts off tentatively but finds the groove quickly before taking off into the Hendrixsphere. 😎
And Keith absolutely knew Taylor was their best guitarist. But he was still the riff master and thus irreplaceable. Jagger - the brains of the Rolling Stones, Richards - the heart and soul.
Charlie Watts stated that when Taylor left the Stones lost the soul of the band. Mick Taylor was untouchable.
The studio version is smooth.

Yes, it's different because Mick Taylor is not on the studio version you know so well. He didn't join the band 'til a few months after it was recorded. They're both great. This one has Mick. The other one has Merry and her iconic voice-crack.

I came across this concert a month ago on CZcams. It is the best I have ever heard the Stones. The "peak" of their incredible carreer. One thing lookig at the playlist however disappointed me. Not enough songs! The people were not getting their monies worth!
Tickets, adjusted for inflation, were around $40. I think they got their money's worth.

From a fantastic album Beggars Banquet 1968, with Let It Bleed which is a retro album for me as my first was Sticky Finger in 1971. These three are my top three studio albums❤.
Unfortunately, there were often not important singles on it, so I bought the compilation Hot Rocks. Later I still liked Steel Wheel 1989 as a whole album, but it lacks a banger.

You HAVE to do Bill McClintock mashup of this song and Rick James Give it to me Baby. It's Bill McClintock - Gimme Shelter Baby. NOBODY has reacted to his mashups. It's very clever. He mashes up both the audio AND videos to make it look like each group is playing the others song. It's the best editing you will ever see. Mind - Blowing!
The best 4 stones albums was in the time of mick Taylor that’s all anyone has to know. That guy was a total bad ass at 20. I saw them twice while he was there and wow
I’m jealous! Stones have been my favorite band since I was in third grade (I’ll be 60 next month), but I never saw them live with Mick Taylor.
But that's not even true. Beggars Banquet (1968) was made when Brian was still in the band. Let it Bleed (1969) was also mainly conceived before Taylor's membership, as he only plays on two songs: "Country Honk" and "Live with Me." Yes, he was a full-fledged member on Sticky Fingers (1971) and Exile on Main St. (1972), in addition to Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out (1970), Goat's Head Soup (1973) and It's Only Rock 'n Roll (1974). But it's dishonest to say that the stupendous four album run of Beggars, Let it Bleed, Sticky, and Exile was all made during the Taylor Era.
NOW ur “getting it” and the magic ingredient for their peak was mixing Keef with MICK TAYLOR!!
Without Kieth there ain't no show.... got to have the cake to put the icing on .....Having said that the sweet and sour guitars of Richards and Taylor made the Stones a heady mix ....Hendrix's version of all along the watchtower is incredible

It's a bootleg recording-no dubbing, no gloss. The Stones were 🔥 on their 1972 Tour and subsequent European Tour in 1973.

Being at Muscle Shoals the First time. Mick Taylor found the Rhythm and The real Soul Blues Rock. Everyone did it. Bob Seger was hanging out there as well. Legendary. Dig the Les Paul standard 👍

Who is Mick Taylor?
No Ronnie is a superior musician. Please people don't get me wrong. Mick T was a great soloist. I saw both live. Mick T had Keith in his prime. But Ronnie wrote for a decade with the Faces great tracks. Mick T never blended with Keith. Ronnie plays pedal steel. Mandolin. Keyes.
Sax. Everything. I love Mick T. But Ronnie is off the charts musicianship puts him above Mick T. The Faces were a great great band. Anyone who has Never A Dull Moment...Coast to Coast live. Or so many more LPs know Ronnie is a superior musician. Many ways. Mick T did some great solos. But never the dance with Keith.
They danced on stage, and that's all I cared about.
