Gurdjieff used to say that if you start getting disidentified from things, sooner or later you will fall upon your essential being. That is the basic meaning of renunciation. Renunciation does not mean, sannyas does not mean, renouncing the world and escaping to the Himalayas or to a monastery -- because if you escape from the world and go to a monastery, nothing is going to change. You carry the same mind. here in the world, the house was yours, and the wife was yours; there the monastery will be yours, the religion will be yours. It will not make much difference. The 'mine' will persist. It is a mind-attitude -- it has nothing to do with any outside space. It is an inner illusion, an inner dream, an inner sleep.
Renunciation means: wherever you are, there is no need to renounce the things because in the first place you never possessed them. It is foolish to talk about renunciation. It means as if you were the possessor and now you are renouncing. How can you renounce something which you never possessed? Renunciation means coming to know that you cannot possess anything. You can use, at the most, but you cannot possess. You are not going to be here forever -- how can you possess? It is impossible to possess anything. You can use and you can be grateful to things that they allow themselves to be used. You should be thankful to things that they allow themselves to be used. They become means, but you cannot possess them.
Dropping the idea of ownership is renunciation. Renunciation is not dropping the possessions but possessiveness. And this is what Gurdjieff calls getting unidentified. This is what Bauls call realizing 'Ardhar Manush' -- the essential man. This is what Zen people call the original face. OSHO

I have pasted this here from a reply comment below. Even moving it up here, I realize it will reach very few, and from those few it may only shift the thinking of one, but that one person will be worth it.
There are real esoteric pathways that are unattainable for most people absorbed in everyday life (often through no fault of their own, and they also may find their way after their time in this human state ends). Such real esoteric pathways are found in living world spiritual traditions, including Hinduism, Islam, various indigenous traditions, and Christianity (as damaged as it is), among others. The world has increasingly shifted away from these traditions in their integrity, leaving a vacuum filled by 'new agers' and other weird, humanly or diabolically invented cults like 'scientology', but perhaps most insidiously filled by Gurdjieff. The work' of Gurdjieff is not among the real esoteric spiritual pathways, nor does it exist as an 'anterior' or more profound or whole (or faster) tradition, as Gurdjieff professed. In the words of Rene Guenon (a renowned Sufi Muslim Shaikh living in Egypt in the first half of the 20th century): "Flee Gurdjieff like the plague." Read the works of Guenon, or Whitall Perry's "Gurdjieff in the light of Tradition" or the article by Ouspensky's close confidante Marie Seton, "The case of P.D. Ouspensky." You will see how Gurdjieff's ideas are antithetical to any real spiritual tradition, and most especially the esoteric sides of those traditions.
Gurdjieff's 'work' is to destroy the souls of seekers. Flee it. If it is in your mind, find ways to cast it out and seek aid from a living spiritual tradition. Gurdjieff stole aspects of real teachings and practices from such traditions, which is what has lent his 'system' all its power, and it is powerful, if malevolent. I know, because for quite a number of years I was in a 'work' group that was only 2 'teachers' removed from Gurdjieff via Ouspensky (one of many promising souls very damaged by Gurdjieff, as Marie Seton points out in the article by her recommended above). In its ultimate purpose, 'the work' is perhaps the best and most powerful example of what Guenon called 'the countertradition.' It is much worse than the ordinary popular cults that prey on the weak minded and vulnerable. Its purpose was (and remains) the subversion of esoteric teachings that are designed for those who might attain spiritual 'realization' in this human lifetime, some of whom could help restore a spiritual basis in their crumbling civilizations. There are many accounts of brilliant people whose lives were ruined by this man, and ruined profoundly. Real spiritual ways are difficult, of course, especially 'contrary' strains of esoteric practice found in Islam or among the Lakota people in North America, for example. But even the most difficult paths do not lead ultimately to despair.
The 'work' will ultimately lead to despair, in the next life if not in this one. I will never forget the stunned looks of despair that slowly grew over the faces of the people who stayed in the 'work group' for any length of time. So even from a worldly perspective, it's a waste of your material life. As for the damage to your soul, this may not have occurred to you as a danger if you believe in Gurdjieff's 'teaching' that we do not have a soul yet, and are machines who must earn a soul(!). But this 'teaching' is an utter lie with some truth in it (a common trick of clever charlatans), and is fundamentally at odds with any spiritual tradition, exotically and esoterically. Flee Gurdjieff, with all your might! Even if you have become entangled for years, there are ways out. Start by knowing you have a soul (however tarnished or mechanically inclined) and a Spiritual Reality (distinct from your soul and untarnishable). Flee Gurdjieff like the plague! To call him a plague is too kind. There are names for his ultimate masters, which I will not honour by repeating here, although G himself was brazen enough to position one of them prominently in his most famous book. I am thankful for whatever Grace may be endowed on that one person who may be embroiled in 'the work' and find through this message a way out of it. This is for you. Thank you.

Gurdjieff used to say, sometimes to very prominent people, famous in some way or other -- great authors, painters, poets, politicians, the people who dominate this world, the great egoists.... He used to say to these people a very significant thing -- remember it. Suddenly he would say to them, "You have a very good facade."
Now to say to a politician, to a president of a country or to a prime minister or to a king, "You have a very good facade," is to invite trouble. And Gurdjieff lived his whole life in trouble. But there is no other way.
He also used to say, more than once.... Whenever some egoist would ask him, "Do you love me? Do you like me?" this was his answer: "For what you could be I have nothing but benevolence, but as you are I hate you -- back to your grandmother!"
This is not diplomacy: this is creating enemies. OSHO

We are so fortunate to be able to experience movies, short though they may be, of various Masters here. Though I once studied at the Pinnacle in NY under the guidance of Irmis Popoff, a student of Ouspensky and Gurdjieff, I am now on a different path. Thank you to whoever assembled and posted this montage. Quite a bit of it is entirely new to me. It's salutary to be exposed to the powerful impressions which make their way through a dilapidated set of mute images. The music is well chosen too - is it based on some of the G. / Thomas De Hartmann pieces?
I note some comments here from people unfamiliar with but interested in G.I. Gurdjieff and his teachings. May I offer a few suggestions.
The two core Ouspensky volumes, "IOTM" and "The Fourth Way" are indispensable: I'm afraid that anyone unable to get through them - whether or not they initially seem understandable or plausible - isn't going to get very far with this teaching, even at an intellectual level. However an excellent condensed introduction is to be found in Michel Waldberg's "Gurdjieff. An Approach to His Ideas".
James Moore's "Gurdjieff: the anatomy of a myth" undertakes an introduction via the format of biography. Its author's credentials are undisputed. The corpus of Gurdjieff literature is now so swollen with worthless relatively recent material obscuring the core works that it's difficult for anyone encountering it to navigate through the maze.
For someone with a serious interest in this teaching and a basic grounding in its concepts and history (but without access to a group having a valid lineage: they are few and far between and difficult to identify) Dr. Maurice Nicoll's "Psychological Commentaries on the Teaching of Gurdjieff and Ouspensky" offers a peerless presentation of The Work written in flawlessly lucid English. These are transcriptions (in 5 volumes) of Dr. Nicoll's lectures to the groups which he led in England in the 1940s. They are unique.
Gurdjieff's own writings, I would say, would best be approached only by those who already have a reasonable understanding of the core teaching and it's history.

@@captaindiabetes4244 Because he sounds cracked and says all kinds of ridiculous things. To get beyond this, you need to be willing to believe, or suspend disbelief. But this conflicts I think what he says in Fragments about not accepting anything you can’t verify. Instead you have to approach the book with the idea there is deep wisdom in it. Then, as Gurdjieffians put it, you have to “dig.” Otherwise you’re wondering things like why is this guy going on and on and on and on about the evils of animal sacrifice? The reference to canaries is to a story in Second Series where he talks about making money for his adventures by dyeing sparrows yellow and selling them to gullible people as American canaries.
