This Big Urban Canal Pike Needed My Help!

  • Well i was supposed to be hitting the local river on this day to target some big perch, but after i received a message about a pike in need of a little help I decided to change my plans. I hit the canal in search of a pike with line and a float rig trailing out of its mouth. The plan was to use the easiest cheat method (live baiting) to ensure the capture of the pike to be able to remove the rigging and release her to be able to live safe and comfortably without a mouth of hooks and line. This is how it went.

    Nice fish!
That was a great effort and incredibly lucky to catch the actual fish targeted. I personally love pike fishing and there are a lot like myself around, but there’s a lot that don’t like pike due to them thinking they keep other fish from being more numerous. Probably true, but there’s other factors as well like overfishing for perch specifically. There’s a lot of poaching going on as well. Certain groups of newly landed persons are not used to regulations and fish for subsistence. Because they need the meat, they keep everything they catch including undersized fish! It is poaching and I report every poacher, but there are few Conservation Officers in a very large area so it’s hard for them to come each time. I am a retired law enforcement officer so I am confident enough (maybe too confident) to go educate the poachers and show them the video evidence I have of them that I will be sending to the Conservation Officer to follow up. I will have them well identified because I will just visit with them first while audio recording the conversation. To be evidence, only one party of a conversation needs to be aware of the recording. I get their names and where they are from, as I have already videoed them in the act, their boat/s if they are not just shore fishing and their vehicles for licence plates and positive confirmation later of their addresses and phone #s that the Conservation Officer can bring up as part of her/his investigation. I leave them with a copy of the current regulations as well. Some have been genuinely sorry, released any poached fish, dead or alive (a Provincial requirement) and learned to fish responsibly. Some have been total jerks. All part of my report. There have been several successful prosecutions and I quite enjoy going to court as a witness to testify. Reminds me of my job prior to retirement. The best results are the people that take appropriate fishing to heart.
It’s so bad that most lakes have size limits or even slot size limits for what can be kept, if even allowed to keep pike at all. Their numbers have been decimated in many lakes. I suspect environmental factors as well, the lakes are getting warmer on average and some turn into pea soup with the amounts of algae that bloom. Regardless, conservation and respect for the species is necessary! It’s great seeing such respect as there is here on this video!!
Sorry about the long post! Well done sir!
