I own a 2000 SLS & love it! After rebuilding an Allante Northstar with the new headbolt kit from Northstar Performance it runs BETTER than ever. I shaved the heads to raise the compression ratio & installed new front struts. The thing handles excellent & is now good for another 200.000 miles of driving. ANYTHING can be improved upon & this is totally worth it.

My grandparents raised me so I can relate to this video very much. My grandpa passed away in 2015 and I got his 1988 Cadillac Brougham. He purchased it from the original owners in 2004. It has an amazing 20,300 original miles. It actually had 17K miles when I first took ownership. My grandpa would say "if you have your family and a Cadilac in the driveway, you'll be okay." I gotta say that having his old car and all of our memories together really helped me get through a time in my life when I didn't feel like I was gonna be okay.
Love this. My grandpa was a Cadillac guy too.
Grandpa sounds like a real dumbass. "Buy this, have that!" Who actually says that shit? You deserve that '88 POS.

It took me almost a year to find a shop willing to work on my 97 Aurora to replace the head gaskets. Not cheap but worth it. It now has Northstar Performance head studs, and better 3 layer stainless steel/composite gaskets. The only real weak point of this engine has now been corrected. Love that Northstar smoothness. Nice video.
The 1990's was my favorite decade for the luxury car, & this generation of the STS is a perfect example of why, even with the Northstar. The latest in technology coupled with the classic elegance, luxury, & style that buyers had come to demand.
-New stat to control the temp, to prevent softening of the heat-bolt aluminum threads.
-New overflow tank since the metal ring where the radiator cap gasket contacts it, will crack and leak coolant, lowering pressure, causing boiling in the motor, and excess heating.
-Replace the flimsy little belt running the water pump.
-Replace the water pump, since they croak around 120k.
-Pray, pray, pray.
We owned a few of that era SLS and sevilles, overall very comfy and powerful, but lessons learned made the subsequent one last longer.
Best seats in the business.
be on top of coolant flushes - anything to prevent the head gasket issue. Otherwise these are awesome cars - probably one of the best vehicles to come out of the 90s.

They are a pleasure to drive and if you stud the engine the gaskets will not fail. The Northstar had great power.
@@chrisj197438 thats kind of what I'm thinking. As much as he has spent on other bombs he might as well have the wizard upgrade the low mile engine and then he could have a car for years that has lots of room for tall people, real quick and is ultra comfortable. That's what I loved about ours.
Agree with all this. Owned a '97 SLS with low miles and the head bolts/gaskets never gave me a problem in 3 years & 42k miles of daily driving - mostly highway miles. I did have to replace the water pump in there somewhere. I remember seeing coolant everywhere thinking it was the heads but nope, water pump. Was actually a great car and all I ever had to replace on it was the water pump and alternator. One thing I remember was how it got like 27mpg on the highway (19-20 in town). The next gen STS where they had by then fixed the head bolt problem was a great car too, but mileage was down to like 22 or 23 on the highway and around town was maybe 16.
The car is great and classy if there’s no problems. Sad to say that our Seville is leaking every single fluid except for gas and break fluid. Our car overheats once in a while which is a huge worry, even though we’ve replaced almost every part that could cause overheating

Having owned many Cadillacs (now 6) I love them... my first Cadillac was a 1997 Deville my father owned, the head gasket went after 6 years of use and he wanted to get rid of it, so i bought it for a very fair price of 1500$ in 2003 with 110k miles on it. I was 28 at the time and wanted a good comfortable road car. Being mechanically minded I dropped the engjne, heilcoiled the block, replaced the heads gaskets which effectively fix the engine, afterwards I drove it another 60k miles to 170k. I upgraded to another Cadillac the 2006 DTS and sold the 97 Deville to
My brother for 500$, and he drove it another 50k miles! Say what you will about northstar, I love them. The car was wonderful !! And solidified my love for Cadillac. One brief drama when I bought it, and a fix that took me a week to repair, gave me years of reliable love and pleasure;). Live on Cadillac !
Very nice! I grew up around many different Cadillac's from all different years. The Northstar Cadillac's has always been my top favorites and still are. I have to say the only Cadillac that has given me a problem with overheating is my 1961 Cadillac, which turned out to be bad, leaking head gaskets. Now I am repairing a 1959 Cadillac with the exact same problem and also the same engine as my 61 Cadillac. But we fix our cars and continue driving them exactly like what other countries do. My current daily driver is a 2005 Deville and also a 1993 Allante and both cars are fun to drive and fast!
Very well done! There aren't as many younger folk who would tackle such a major engine repair like that, these days. You work your butt off hard for a week straight, to see it through to the end and fix that damn car knowing it is fixed properly because you did it yourself. There are way too few who get to experience that sense of achievement, the pride and self worth from a job well done and knowing that you can succeed at anything - ANYTHING only you CAN'T QUIT - you persevere even when it becomes a little too difficult or a bit too uncomfortable. When you approach a problem with an attitude of ONLY success and having NO FEAR OF FAILING you really can achieve anything, it's really true. Unfortunately It take some of us longer than others to learn this lesson in life.

Super nostalgic for me as well. Many dances, proms, graduations, and a funeral in my folks' STS. I think it's still a great looking car. Our version had the chrome Cadillac wheels, those things were like huge silver serving platters. Thank you Tyler.

I had a 1998 STS and my head gasket (rear) went at 92K miles. I was a mechanic so I fixed it myself only to have the car totaled by 2 kids in a stolen car a few months later. When I did the rebuild I used ARP studs and under torqued it by a few pounds to avoid stripping the threading. It was a great engine (now a coffee table) and a great car, though I’ve went the German route since then.
No idiot would ever buy a 93 Seville for over a grand.
Hoovie: "Hold my beer"
Hello Twin lol
I believe some of the Sevilles were available with the 4.9, a generally good engine, up to '94. If you can find a clean, low mileage 4.9 equipped car, buy it. The Shitstar equipped cars destroyed the rep of the Sevilles so thoroughly that all these cars have zero value. You can buy a 4.9 for nothing and drive it for quite a long time, it's literally driving for the cost of gas and tires.
That stupidity is what makes these collectors items today...
Scott Wilkins a sts/Seville will never be a collectors item....
@@MrSloika I don't like 4.9 engines, OHV with spark distributor and low torque 4T60E gearbox - don't make me laugh. Northstar 4.6 is awesome engine, excepting it's oil leaks, maybe anaerobic sealant could solve this problem. My northstar has near 200,000 miles on it and it runs smoothly, just leaks oil in a little.

Great story of the connection to Sevilles and your grandfather! I have a similar Cadillac connection, with the 1979-85 generation Eldorado and my grandma. In the early 1990's she drove a 1983 Eldorado (until she got a new Cutlass Supreme in 1995, I was 4). I have memory of riding in the Eldorado with her, some of my earliest car memories. On top of that, she worked at Cadillac as an assembly line worker from 1976 (Yes, at the famous Clark Street plant until it closed) until the late 1990s (moving to the Hamtramck plant). So, Cadillacs have been engrained in me from a very early age. I also got to see the Cadillac assembly line with her, but I dont really remember it, being so young.
Though it's not an Eldorado, this year I finally did buy a Cadillac, fullfilling a life long dream of mine, a red 2008 DTS. My grandma is still here today, she just turned 80 this year, and she too has a 2008 DTS. The Eldorado is no longer around. It sat an deterioated for over a decade, until it was scapped. However, I do have all of the emblems and hood ornament from it.
I owned a 94 STS and I loved the damn thing. Bought it with 116K and figured it was only driven 10k or less a year average. It treated me well and sold it forward and its still running. Current owner has 166k on it as of today and the heads still holding.

These came out the year I got my license and my first car which was a used Honda Prelude. The Northstar Engine'd Seville used to be once of the coolest and fastest "normal" cars on the road back then running the 1/4 mile in the mid 14's. Used to drool over them.

"And variable valve timing" (4:20). No, the front wheel drive Cadillacs with the Northstar did not have variable valve timing. That was introduced later with the longitudinal that came out a decade later.
I own a 1999 Cadillac Seville with 180,000 plus miles on it with no head gasket issues! When I turned eighteen, this was the first car that I purchased and it has been a pleasure to own for the last decade. My word of advice is to ensure that if you are getting work done, ensure that you give it to someone who knows what they are doing. There's an active Cadillac Forums website that has saved my life so many times and has given this shad tree mechanic guidance on how to fix things (I've literally stayed up for hours late at night reading through Forums on ways to fix things or to prevent things from happening). You are correct in saying that it's not an "if" the head gasket will go but but "when"; this is why preventive action should be made. I do not endorse this company in any way but I know that Jake over at Northstar Performance (in Canada) is the king of these cars and has created a patented system to help fix the head gasket issue; check it out! I've never personally had to get this done because I've never had the head gasket issue, but when it happens I'm taking mine over to Jake. If you really want this car to last, I highly recommend doing this preventive maintenance and this thing will last you for many years to come! Do this, and this might be the cheapest car you've ever owned! Welcome to the Northstar club Tyler!
I love seeing this car, especially the interior. My mom had a '90 Seville with the older 4.9L pushrod engine. She bought it new and drove it over 250k mi. without any significant issues. Great style, nice handling for the time. I remember the transmission was amazingly smooth and responsive. Downshifted before you knew you needed it, and had the amazing ability to upshift under full throttle - you could not feel it shift....ever.
I bet it’s still more reliable than your Amg wagon.

Nice job, Hoovie. This channel has grown on me. And yes, the styling on that Cadillac is entire OK, both inside and out. Pity it's FWD. No doubt you will have your Car Wizard fix those head bolts and some lucky new owner won't have to worry about it.
I also had one of these exact cars, same color too. It was 2005 and I lived in Georgia. I bought the car for $1500 with about 180,000 on her. but in really good condition. That creamy sparkly paint is awesome. In 2007 I drove to Los Angeles to hang out with friends for the summer. I was getting 600 miles per tank all the way across country. I drove the crap out of her all around the mountains and hills of Hollywood. Cruising the Sunset Strip blasting Motley Crue on the aftermarket Alpine. Driving along the coast for hours and hours per week. Never had a single issue... ever. I had to go back to Georgia for my job so pack up... road trip number 2. Again, got 600 miles per tank all the way back home. No issues. My first day back to work I take off from a red light and SPLASH! Hot coolant all over my feet. I look at the coolant temp and its 250. Im trying to make it to work but she is fighting me. All of a sudden BAM BAM BAM BAM!! The hood popped up on that last bam. She was done. I reluctantly sold her to a body shop for $500. I totally get the sentimental connection to these cars. It is still the most comfortable car Ive ever driven. I bet with some frame and suspension mods you could gut out the engine bay and do a LS1 swap in one. It would, of course, be strictly for sentimental reasons as such a conversion would be 8x more than the car is worth.
“The northstar V8 the engine, the engine that nobody asked for and nobody wanted.” -Mr. Regular
Except it's not true, if it wasn't for reliability it would have been great.
Maybe but the lt\ls would of been better cadillac designed a whole new engine instead of using a better one that gm was already producing
The northstar v8 is a really good engine. Minus the massive flaw with the headbolts.. but have it repaired properly and it will run forever.
@@AnythingGasoline I hope you're right, because I drive one! But if it breaks down, how could I justify spending more cash fixing it than the entire car is worth?
@@emspera Replacing the bolts is practically the same job as replacing the head gaskets, so it is not a viable option as a preventive measure. The problem with the bolts is, that they are threaded straight in to the aluminum block and they will strip the threads in the block.

I had one of these back in the 90s and I LOVED it! I see that Mr. Hoovie is using one of my (and my now-wife's) favorite feature and that was the slacked seatbelts. You could induce slack in the belt and it would stay loose until hard breaking. It was so comfortable!!! It also had a feature where it would expell HVAC air in the system right after starting so that you didin't get a blast of super hot hot or cold air from the car sitting. The engine was incredible but I will say the torque steer was severe! Really a great car. It was very reliable for me but I sold it after about three years. And I sold it to buy a brand new Audi A6. Now THAT was a POS! from the moment I pulled out of the dealer lot that car gave me nothing but problems. I sold that car before I had it for a year!!!

A lot of things led to the downfall of Cadillac, and it was a long time in the making, starting with the marque's difficulty in adapting to the emissions and fuel efficiency standards of the 1970s as well as the fact that Cadillac wound up being no exception to GM's damning habits of design-by-committee, badge engineering, and bean-counting.
ddk80 yes. My Uncle had that Chevy/Cadillac. Bought new and it was done after only 70 k and 10 years later. Donated it for a charity
I remember being a teenager in the 90's. That is when I started driving. I was a Lincoln and Cadillac fan for sure. Never did I think Cadillac and Lincoln would have gone the ways they did. Cadillac especially. Awful seats, awful names, no more big, bold, styling. Disappointing. I do like some things Cadillac is doing, but I miss the cars I grew up with. Same for Lincoln. I don't like turbo engines. I want real names. I want seats that are comfortable and cushy. I have a soft spot for 90's vehicles period. The last decade before it all went downhill and too much technology took over. Awesome vid. Thanks!
I agree with that too.
Lincoln mark 8 is a very nice car and reliable also
I too have fond memories of riding in the back of my grandparents Seville STS back in the day. I completely understand!
"Cadillac has been losing buyers by the cemetery full for years now and the new sevelle is thier attempt at reversing that course"
~Motorweek (1992).
I was a salesman at at a lot that sold one of these that had JB WELD over the cracked block.
HereFishyFishy seen half inch wide three inch tall cracks on front of block... It still runs today.
Thanks so much Hoovie for mentioning the word bearing.
I owned a 2001 STS, never changed the oil the last 5 years, just kept adding 1 qt every month, sold it with 178,000 miles on it.
Reliable and would still own it today if the suspension wasn’t falling apart.
John Abatto I had a smoker 1994. Blown head gaskets, headers glow in the dark, loud sizzle. Ruined. It was a loner at least, was waiting on a older car to get fixed, Oldsmobile Delta 88 1988.
2000 and up Northstars are exponentially better engines than pre 2000
Finally, buying actual hoopties again.
Love these. As a kid, an older couple actually owned one in the town I lived (Dutch small town, about 500 residents). What a rare sight, it looked like a space ship to me. They had that thing for years.
So informative! Well done
I actually bought a Cadillac 1994 Eldorado Touring Coupe Northstar as my first personal car. I didn't think I'd like it, but I've ended up in love with the damn thing. 130,000 miles and there's nothing wrong with the engine, but I did have a solenoid that needed replaced, and there may be some wear on the transmission in general, but it's still a great car I'm willing to keep around.
The Eldrodo's black, sleek design still turns a few heads, and I've gotten quite a few compliments on the car since owning and maintaining it. Even drove it on a lengthy trip from Pennsylvania to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and the temp never went over 223*, which was better than expected during the hot weather.
But when that Northstar engine is being used, the big old boat car still moves, and sounds pretty great doing it. You could certainly say I've developed a soft spot for the "grandpa" car. Enough that I'm willing to dump some cash into it, whether for more power or some repairs if needed. Call that stupid if you want, sometimes you just love a car.
“I love the lines on this car”
-Hoovie talking about a box
yes a box has lines
Unreliable Cadillac? He must of not heard of the Cadillac Catera 😂
iTzYaBoYal 80s Cimarron even worse
paulg it was overpriced and typical 80s GM junk. My Uncle had one and after 70 k miles it was falling apart, paint dull, plastic splitting, transmission not shifting correctly, seats 💺 tearing etc. basically 10 years late he donated it to charity
@@PabloDiablo682 the engineers said they were not given the time or money to do their typical upgrading and engineering so the car was quite literally a rebadged Cav with lots of options.
The original Seville was also a badge engineered chevy, an X body nova. But it enjoyed significant revisions and was a first strong stem in the downsized euro sedan direction, to bad they didnt pull it off again with the Cimmaron and Catera.
Speaking of the Seville, with it sharing its bones with the X body and thus the 2G F body I always wanted to give one the whole street touring treatment using aftermarket F body suspension components and a built caddy 500 in front of a beefy 6 speed. Keep the entire plush interior of course.
Have fun in Destin. I used to frequent it when I was stationed at Eglin AFB down the road. My grandpa also had a late 90’s seville but in silver.
OMG wife played it so well with her reaction LMAO 😂 "Yes dear, the channel is going from cars to a driving comedy show!" Glad u made it safe!!
The closed captions translation of the open is “Welcome to Huggies Garage”. I think CZcams’s algorithm thinks Hoovie might be a dad again soon.
Naw. Just that his taste in vehicles is full of shit and stink
I had this car for like 3 months and then steam started coming out of the exhaust and the mechanic I brought it to advised "dispose of immediately" real comfortable seats tho
Can it be replaced with a Vortec?
@@taunuslunatic404 in a fwd car?
@@taunuslunatic404 it's not going to be any cheaper to engine swap the thing, a sorted northstar can be reliable and make great power.
You should have put a couple cans of Blue Devil in the radiator, idle it for an hour, let it cool down and I'm pretty sure that would have fixed you head gasket problems for at least a couple years
Mine filled a parking lot with that shit. Very embarrassing.
I changed a Northstar water pump some years ago, and I remember a lot of cussing being involved.
That is really simple to change out and very similar to the old Cadillac's that I'm use to. There were certain Cadillac engines back in the 1920/30s era that also required a special tool to remove the pump. My grandfather worked on many old Cadillac's, and even back then, they all had things that were ahead of everyone else in technology.
Also those seats are AMAZING! my buddy had one of these and it was hands down some of the cushiest fluffiest seats i've ever sat in a car.
❤️LOVE❤️ these older STS’s! Your Grandparents had impeccable taste; I owned _both_ of the Cadillac’s you mentioned Tyler!👍👍
I had a ‘94 STS in Dark Montana Blue Metallic with every option including the factory spoiler on the trunk; had just shy of *250k miles* on it before I sold it... never a problem with it & bolts were _not_ redone!😳😳. Loved the torque in that beast... just too bad it wasn’t RWD.
Later, I also had a ‘04 CTS...loved that car too but wasn’t a traditional Cadillac _Land Yacht_ as they started to downsize all their models around that time.
Thanks for the awesome content & enjoy your vacation! 🏝🌊☀️
Did your CTS have the 3.2 or 2.8?
I'd wager the fact it wasn't rear wheel drive killed it's chances against the Germans way more than any reliability issues. The automotive press harped on that more than anything.
LRL Official, mine had a ‘92 and in that time is was QUICK!
Evan Ganske 5.7L LS6. Did/do you have/had one as well!??
Funny that GM wanted color-matching front grills, but never gave a second thought about the 2 black rubber cushions on the front bumpers looking hideous.
That's probably for US safety requirements. A lot of imported european cars at the time had these types of bumpers added due to US safety laws. Maybe it's so it looked like a european luxury import back in 1993?
I bought a 99 Cadillac for $500! The head gaskets are blown but I’m in the process of fixing them. I love the car and can’t wait to get it up and going! Thanks for sharing the video!
WOW!! My grandma sold that exact seville for a newer cts as well 😂😂 thats too funny man! I always missed that car and wanted to find it. You just described my childhood
Make no mistake, this is a content car, he needs it to be unreliable. No ones here to watch reliable cars.
Yay! Wizard gets to do Northstar headstuds!
Does that increase the value of these cars once that fix is done?
No.
@@Tempsho As I learned in 4th grade math class. Zero times anything is still always 0.
Good luck with the Caddy, we had a couple of Northstar engines in the family and one did blow up (on a 90s something Cadillac). The other two (on a 2006 DTS and a 2007 Lucerne) were just fine for the time we owned them. Just bought a green 2004 Oldsmobile Bravada several months back for $3,600 with 88,000 miles even on it and it has just over 91,000 now. I love it, and bought it for a reason similar to you - brought back childhood memories! My mother had a 1998 green Oldsmobile Silhouette and it had its issues, but so many memories were made in that car. Olds was one of my favorite brands and I had to have one of the last models for myself one day. Now I can ride my family around in my green Oldsmobile like the old days!
No variable valve timing until the end of the Northstar era. I had a 1999 STS and it was fun.
