  • Arwen is a 15' yawl designed by famous New Zealand boat designer, John Welsford. I built her over two and a half years in my garage and she was launched in 2010. Since then we have cruised the rivers and coastal waters of South Devon and Cornwall and you can follow our adventures at Arwen's blog www.arwensmeanderings.blogspot.co.uk or on her youtube channel where you can download videos or themed playlists / plymouthwelshboy .
In this video, (split over three parts - this is part three), we spend a day pottering around Plymouth Sound, exploring the river plym, anchoring in Cawsand Bay and landing on Drakes Island beach.
Drop us a comment, subscribe to our channel and blog, stay in touch. If you would like me to address a particular dinghy cruising aspect in a forthcoming video - drop me a lie below. if you have any nice constructive friendly advice to improve my sailing skills please do let me know and thank you.
Fair winds, good sailing, stay safe and see you out on the water sometime
    Steve and Arwen

Seeing the stability of the Navigator when you leave the tiller and go forward to douse the main was worth watching the entire video. I can't wait to start my build.

I thought the same when he got into the water, very stable. Good luck with the build. Will you be posting it on YT?

Thanks Steve. Good to see around your home cruising grounds. A lovely day too- enjoyed this while it’s raining and gale force here in Sydney.

Great little trio of vid Steve
Love that you landed on Drakes island too didn’t realise they now allowed that
Maybe do that next time we sail the Sound
Hope to sail with you next time if we get our ducks in a row too

    Some nice soothing sailing.

Been here and sailing longer and never thought to land there either. I thought for a while that you were doing capsize and recovery drills which were the bane of my life when I went on and then taught on open canoe courses.

At some stage I need to do some capsize recovery tests and actually off that beach may well be the place to try it this summer. I only ever managed to roll a kayak twice in capsize recovery.....I never managed it in an open canoe.....I tried really hard at canoeing and kayaking but never really mastered it despite several BCU training courses at calshot....I think it was there......much preferred mountain walking......did some climbing as well but after a few solos I began to wonder what the hell I was doing......mountain walking and some ice climbing on the other hand.......... 😁

@@plymouthwelshboy Iv'e never rolled a canoe but capsized plenty.....rescue drills were just a regular feature of going to the Brenin and doing a course....one course in about February still comes to mind !. At one time I got into practicing cold water swimming and immersion in case I ever had to do it for real - that helped one time I had to go under my cruising boat early in spring to sort a problem out - one of the things that helps in very cold water is bootees and mitts as the cold water response seems more acute with bare feet and hands. At the moment I keep looking at the Pathfinder and wondering where I can put some properly useful handholds.

I've always been far better on the water than in the water 😂

Is the Navigator boom always so low, or is it a special feature of Arwen?

    • @plymouthwelshboy
      @plymouthwelshboy  Před 2 lety +1

Ah now that depends on a perspective.....is it a special feature of Arwen......yes.....should it be a special feature of Arwen......no........I'm still mastering this sail setting malarkey 🙄

No lazy jacks on the main ?

Hi Jim....combined topping lift and lazy jack's on main.....seems to work fairly well

You look more at home on the water, than in it. Drone Pilots are ok but when using 3 or 4 tugs and other aspects of pilotage i can see real problems.

I'm not a great fan of being in water ....you noticed 🤣🤣🤣
