  • Crayola Signature Blend and Shade Colored Pencil Review
Hi In this review we take a look at the Crayola Signature Blend and Shade Colored Pencils. As we all know Crayola is a name synonymous with kids art supplies, which I am sure we have all, at one time or another used either at home or school.
When I started The Art Gear Guide, I had a plan as to what I wanted to do with the channel and right at the beginning, as much as I looked forward to testing and reviewing all the expensive artist quality supplies, I wanted to make sure that I reviewed all products, as many as I can get hold of, from the cheapest to the most expensive. I want The Art Gear Guide to be the most comprehensive guide of art supplies on the internet and hopefully I am well on my way to accomplishing that
You can check out my speed drawing that I completed with the Crayola Signature by clicking the link below, or you can read my written review where I add a bit more information regarding prices etc. I have also added a page to The Art Gear Guide with some still images of the art work so that you can check out the work in better detail and see if the Crayola Signature Colored Pencils are for you. Definitely. Same with marker artists. Or water colour ones. (Not all of them, obviously) There's so many on here that only use Copics and similar price range water colours and other high range materials and practically make one feel that if you cannot afford those, you better not even try getting into the art. To have someone give materials a try that are on the lower end of the price range and maybe not so nice to handle is definitely a nice chance in pace. I know that there's a lot of lower priced stuff that clearly is rubbish, but one can actually work with a lot of those things, even if there not as convenient, and be really happy with the results (E.g. I did my user pic here with real cheap alcohol markers from a bunch of different stores like Flying Tiger, Sostrene Grene and Action where most of the markers cost less than 50 cents per marker and given my Faber-Castell liners, which arena bit costlier, but still don't cost as much Copic omes and are easier to come by than Sakuras here in Germany)

So often commented on other channels, please would they do reviews on what I call budget or affordable products. Most review the most expensive material but most people can't afford to buy them and just might make some unhappy with what they have. If they do a review they call these products cheap. They are only cheap if you don't get your moneys worth. I mean would people call their car cheap because it is not a Rolls -Royce? I would like to see more reviews on products the lower or middle class can afford. I have various brands but I purchased Amazon basic colour pencils which come with name and number on pencil in a very nice tin. I was suprised by how good they are. They don't have lightfastness ratings, although some people asked about that, really, the emphasis is on BASIC. They do a good job in the here and now and provide people with the pleasure of producing art and you do get your moneys worth both kids and adults. I don't think they are available outside North America, was hopeing they would be this Christmas but this year is like no other. I would think more reviews on what is affordable to the majority of the population would be enjoyable and informative in what can be achieved by them. When I was a child in Scotland my Dad use to pickup at Woolworths yellow sticky paper my sister and I use to use to make into rings and make Christmas garlands out off. Loads of fun!

I know the yellow sticky paper you mean we used to do that in our house for Christmas. We cut them into strips and link them together in chains.
I have quite a few budget brands on my channel as reviews, I think it is so important to provide a wide range of reviews as we all love by very different means.
I get what you mean about referring to products such as these as cheap, cheap is a relative term, cheap to who? When I refer to kids and art I refer to them as young artists as I don’t want to patronise or suggest that they are lesser artists because they are children. I have seen young artists produce absolutely breathtaking art, it’s actually one of the things I love about art, I think it breaks down so many divides. When an individual uses paint, paper, Colored pencils or whatever, their wealth doesn’t mean anything, nor their religion, sexual preference, race, when pigment is laid down we are all equal and I love that about art.
Thank you so much for your comment and support

I absolutely love my Crayola 120 set. It has wonderful colors. I have some other brands that I have acquired over time, but I still love my Crayola. I would suggest that everyone purchase the 12 set of Crayola colored pencils to use as a comparison standard of basic colors. The Crayola have a true red , true blue, etc. I found that I can do a comparison on scratch paper of the primary colors and immediately know if the other brands are a cool red, warm red , etc.

I have the 24 set of the Crayola Signature, and I love them. I just do adult coloring books, regular and Grayscale, and these work very well. They do do blend well, actually better than my Staedtlers and Marco Raffines. I'm planning on ordering the 50 pencil set soon. Thank you for the reviews you do. I'm disabled and I can't afford some of the high price supplies, and it's good to see someone reviewing budget pencils.

Definitely great to see someone have a go with budget art supplies - not all of us have a money-shitting donkey tethered in their garden ^^' Or want to spend so much money on art supplies, either because they're just want to try out something new or they're creative Jack-of-all-trades like me and just love doing a lot of different things :) If I'd buy only creme de la creme supplies, I'd probably be bankrupt by now ^^'
I definitely can understand your animosity towards the font ^^ - I always thought I was being nitpicky, but you can definitely put me off quite easily by choosing wrong fonts 😂 Why on earth would one re-brand and not consider redesigning the logo? I mean, it wouldn't make sense with brands like Faber-Castell, Koh-I-Noor or Pelikan which already got pretty neutrai/classical logo designs, but the Crayola one's so baloony an childish ^^'
I really like the box, that's a beautiful one. I'd definitely would use it for something else than storing the pencils, though :).
And, I definitely love the fact that they print actual colour names on the barrels. That's a real nice touch! I'm lucky to not being colour blind or anything myself, but there's enough people that are and it's cool to see that little touches like this might actually help them :)

There was definitely no animosity about the font, just a simple observation. Lots of companies when they provide a top tier product so to speak jazz up or enhance their logo, not completely revamp or change it, just enhance it.
Thank you so much for your comment and your support really appreciate it, thank you so much

Great to see these pop up Harry. I LOVE tins. I have loads of them. The old-fashioned ones are the best. I keep sewing things in them. From tiny tins for pins to bigger ones for a piece I might be working on and everything in between.
I have these pencils. I bought them on a whim because years ago I was given a set of Crayola Blendables pencils and although the barrel is really skinny, the colours are bright and the pencils much softer than the kids Crayola (which have some lovely colours in them). These Signature pencils are not the same as the Blendables but they aren't that far off. They don't make them anymore. I really quite like these for colouring books. They are bright and softer. I agree about the snagging wood and one of my greens is broken right up the barrel I think, but apart from that they are nice to use and have some pretty colours in the set. They will blend and layer a bit, but not as much as the Black Widows I don't think. They aren't that cheap, but I do use them. I love the tin and it has 2 sheets of clear, stiff plastic inside that are idea to put behind your pages if you are working in a book. All in all a nice set of pencils that most colourists would be very happy to receive.

I had a quick look and contrast between the Crayola Signature and the Black Widows. I have a picture coloured in both in the same book, so that same paper. A good paper in a decent book. The Signature have more white specs showing through and the pigment is a little less vibrant than the Black Widows in this instance.

Also, these pencils blew my mind when I saw them applied to black paper. They almost looked metallic on the black paper.
On standard white paper, they're not that impressive, especially their blendability, but whoa! When you showed them on the black paper, i was stunned lol. Super vibrant! Wow!

I started coloring in the adult world, not quite but almost 4-1/2 years ago. I started out with the Classic Crayola pencils...the 50 set to be exact, or what you call the kids pencils. My first year or so in, I use to get upset and frustrated when someone would say that these pencils never blend or layer....it took me a while to realize that statement was only true for the person making it because the fact is they do layer and blend beautifully, IF you know how to work with them properly. Not like Prisma Premier of course, but they do blend and layer very nicely. I know because I do it A LOT....in fact, I can layer and blend them even better now, with more experience behind me than when I first started...to the point that I am now able to combine colors to get new ones. Perhaps it would be more accurate to state the following, “I personally can’t layer and blend with __________”, rather than making a blanket statement that they can’t _______? Just saying that for almost every person that says that the regular Crayola pencils (or any other pencils, for that matter) can’t blend or layer, your going to find some individuals that are going say the opposite because they are doing the opposite.

Many people benefit from the process of creating art . The price of supplies does not take away from that experience. @TheArtGearGuide  Před 3 lety

Hi Joan thank you so much for your comment. I’m not sure how long you’ve been on the channel but I split my reviews into 4 separate parts.
The CZcams video which take the form of talking about the product, showing the tests and demos and the concluding. I ended up doing the videos this way because back when I started I did the videos differently but this was the way the vast majority of people wanted the video review.
So because of that and trying to please as many people as possible, I submit a written review which covers the stuff in the video only in written form and additional info such as pricing. I add the pricing and other info on the written review because I can change that as and when prices change but I can’t do that on the videos.
I then add a speed drawing of just the art work on a CZcams video
Finally, because the speed videos are fast, I also take images of the artwork at various stages of completion from start to finish. I then add the images to my website so that people can click on the images which automatically enlarge and viewers can inspect in their own time.
When I used to jump straight into the demos, people wanted to hear about the product first. I also tried to adapt my videos as people said they were too long, so I made a video on the Caran D’Ache Luminance that showed the product and only bullet points about the product. That video is still up on the channel and the comments are clear, everyone hated it.
I really try my very best to please everyone but it is impossible. One review can take me two weeks, working long hours from taking photos, adding the photos to videos, writing and editing my writing, making a video and editing that, as well as testing and demonstrating the product and then the Art work which can take at least a week, including the photos and video recording the speed drawing. It really is a lot of work.

None of the Crayola brands are lightfast tested so I shouldn’t think there is any ratings on then. You tend to find only the artist quality pencils or higher end student grade pencils have lightfast ratings. The reason for this is because the testing process companies have to go through in order to have their products tested and certified is incredibly expensive. So for art supplies under a certain price tag, it doesn’t financially make sense for the companies to do this Testing and then sell the product at a low cost comparatively speaking to the high end artist quality pencils.
I hope this helps you out a bit. Thank you so much for your comment and support.

Hi Harry. I read your written review. I think You mentioned that you blended the red apple with black where you would usually use brown. I was just wondering why that was? Was it because there wasn’t a suitable brown? Thank you, love your Channel

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  Před 3 lety +2

Hi Kacey, there are browns in the set but you know the way in some sets you have those rich deep red mahogany browns are your dark sepia greyish browns, well there were none of those. The darkest brown was like a Burnt Sienna or Van Dyke Brown which for the purpose of this drawing, were just not deep and dark enough to really enrich and darken the reds in the sets.
If you watch a lot of my reviews you will here me say how frustrated I get when I find a beautiful pencil from a good company and the largest set they provide of that pencil is 36.
Pencils are just not like watercolours, oils or Acrylics or even pastels, you can mix colors together with pencils but not to the same level you can with the afore mentioned mediums. I personally think if you are going to work in Colored pencils to achieve hyper realistic drawings, landscapes, animal portraits then at the very least you need a 36.
Bruynzeel are a good example of this, they make some really beautiful pencils, but their professional range the Design only come in a maximum set of 48 and that just isn’t enough for fine art Colored pencil artists to be submitting breathtaking works of art to competitions and Galleries showcasing the Bruynzeel name. People know of the Faber Castell Polychromos, Caran D’Ache Pablo and Luminace and the Derwent Lightfast because they are the top pencils being used by CP artists and Prismacolor to a lesser extent in this day an age but artists are still able to provide breathtaking work with them. However people know these names because when the see amazing work and ask what the medium was 9 times out of 10 it is going to be one of these pencils. But if you test and try pencils like the Design side by side to these other brands, if they came in sets of 100, 120 or 150, they would be able to garner very similar results.
This is just my opinion but I would love to see certain companies extend their range. Thank you so much for your question, I apologise if I went off on a bit of a tangent I sometimes do that. I hope I was able to answer your proper question in amongst all the noise of my reply. Thank you so much Kacey.

You are more than welcome to your opinion and it is a valid point. Thing is, for me personally, this is not just a review channel, this is my way of connecting to people. As a disabled military veteran house bound, I don’t get out very much, in fact not at all unless I am with someone and I guess like elderly people who sit at home by themselves a lot of the time, when the opportunity arises to talk to other people I get carried away.
As a soldier I was incredibly outgoing, loved meeting people, learning about them and their lives and making friends with people from all over the world. Going from that to say in the house on my own most of the time is a pretty lonely existence.
For the most part I time stamp my videos so that people can skip straight to relevant parts, but sometimes I do forget to actually add the time stamps. Thank you so much for stopping by, sorry the channel is not for you, it’s such a shame but that you all the same for your feed back

I enjoy the personal touch aspect of Harry’s videos. I find I enjoy it even more this year since I have been isolated from my loved ones due to the pandemic 😷. I guess it’s not for everyone.

I am so sorry, I can’t help people like your good self who are not prepared to look at the description box of the video, I can’t make you do anything. If you wanted bite size to the point information I have a written review with subheadings for each section including a conclusion. It would have taken you less time to skim through that than waste your time writing what you wrote.
Also, in all the reviews I have done, I never tell the viewer if the product is good or not. I show the product and leave it down to the viewer to decide if the product fits their style of art.
If I added a video, 1minute long saying yeah these are good pencils I recommend them, you would be on crying that it was too short and why did I think they were good and who am I to decided what is and isn’t a good pencil. People like yourself look for things to complain about. If you think you can do a better job, then please by all means, jump onboard and upload review videos. Hope to chat with you soon and so sorry you didn’t find what you where looking for.

Crayola Signature is just a Faber Castell Goldfaber wannabe.
