BABYMETAL with Tom Morello 'Metali' part 2: extra thoughts on performance from AJ Hartley (BM #38.2)

  • I had some extra thoughts, prompted by the helpful observations and insights of some commentators and thought it worth posting (in true academic fashion) a footnote :) Thanks to Flugelhornoldman for the nudge :) Based on comments from my Japanese viewers, I'd suggest "Sakura-ya!" as the shout for Momoko's mie.

BM fans doing kakegoe when Momoko strikes the pose is a clever idea. The protocol/procedure for kakegoe-or ohmukoh, as it's often called in kabuki-is complex. "Ya" is part of the house or guild name ("yagoh"), so it would be "Sakura-ya!". (Problem here is SG no longer exists.) In the case of a next-generation performer-which Momoko certainly is-"waka", meaning "young", is often prefixed, so it could be "Waka-Sakura!" or maybe "Waka-Muse!" (no "ya" in this case). Also, when the performers on stage are all from the same house, sometimes the surname will be called out, so it could be "Okazaki!" or maybe "Hakata!" (from her father's stage name). Btw, it's commonly people in the cheap seats who do the calling in kabuki ("ohmukoh" refers to the cheap seats). But BM fans can shout out from anywhere.

Nice. Thanks for the suggestion. Maybe fans will try it :)

    • @otobokegaijin6218
      @otobokegaijin6218 Před 11 měsíci +9

Another commenter stated that "waka" would be used for the successor-i.e., the eldest son-to the house and may not be appropriate here, but depending on the occupation or profession "waka" is used for women, and in any case women don't perform on the kabuki stage, so the whole point is moot, as far as that goes.
Still, it's a great idea. Fans should try "Sakura-ya!" Or "Babymetaya!" as a different commenter suggested. Or maybe "Matte mashita!" ("I was / we were waiting for you/this!") as a third commenter suggested-frequently used in kabuki and avoids any name problem.

The trade name (YAGOU) is not the name of the training school, but it sounds interesting... Since Sakura Gakuin is no longer in existence, we cannot treat it as a Kabuki trade name. If I had to say, "BABYMETAYA"!(ベビメタ屋!) I guess 😁.

  • @meimemeime
    @meimemeime Před 11 měsíci +5

Thank you for your detailed explanations.
Not all Japanese have seen 歌舞伎(Kabuki), 能(Noh) or 狂言(Kyogen), but almost everyone knows them in fragments.
I know that when they "見得を切る"(Mie wo kiru=strike a pose?), audience shout "XXXXya". And I know that "XXXXya" is a 屋号(yagou). I am not familiar with the exact meaning of the Yagou, but I believe it refers to the place where the actor belongs. However, this part is not confident, so look up Kabuki and Yagou.
I don't know much about Kabuki, so I'll also write about what I've just found out.
Nowadays, there is a specialist who shouts out Yagou, which is called 大向う(Oomukou). They shouts out Yagou at the most appropriate time to maximise the excitement of the play.
It is common in 演歌(enka=traditional Japanese folk songs) for 祭り(Matsuri) songs to be accompanied by 掛け声(Kakegoe=shouts). The most commonly used shouts are Wasshoi Dokkoisyo, but there are many others.
I can't explain it well in words, so here is a video to get you started. I would be grateful if you could watch it when you have time.
Please search youtube for these characters and watch the videos.(URLs are not written as comments may be invalidated if they contain ULRs. I will write it in reply to this comment.)

This is not an enka song, but it is also a very old song, and you can see the soiya shouting and dancing (same choreography as BM's wasshoi).
The most common shouts when carrying the mikoshi are "wasshoi" and "soiya". However, calls vary from region to region. In my city it is "Yareyareyareyo". It is not a Mikoshi to be carried, but a stall. These days they do it over loudspeakers, so this voice can be heard throughout the city from morning till night.
This is a Mikoshi from a neighbouring city. The call is あんえっとん(an etton), which is supposed to be a prayer for prosperity and peace in the city, but I honestly don't know what this pronounced word means. The festival also includes an event called (Kamikorogashi), in which the baby is turned over several times to pray for the child's good health, and it is said that the louder the baby cries, the more healthy it will grow. They hold うちわ(Uchiwa=fans) around the Mikoshi, and the children's names are written on the Uchiwa.

Thanks for the extra thoughts. There is a video from a fan of a live performance from Metali at 19th of August (summer sonic). There you could see how Moa and Su are kneeling besides Momo. But there is one real important difference between the live performance and the offical video. After Momo says Metali she crowls very very deep "Are you ready?". It is an amazing scene that I am sadly missing in the official version of the song. I hope I will see it on the live concert in November in Germany. I think it is a key moment of Momos solo part.

Thank you for your detailed explanation. This is my first time commenting on your channel.
I think it's a good idea to do Kakegoe during MOMO's performance. But, I felt like it would be a bit odd if you yelled just "Sakura!" to her. So, I discussed it with my wife, who has been a big fan of Kabuki for more than 30 years. Since "Sakura" was supposed to be the name of the house(屋号, ya-gou), the word "-ya" should be put after Sakura, so it would be "Sakura-ya" as seen in your video like "Narita-ya" or "Kourai-ya."
My wife pointed out another thing: there are several patterns of Kakegoe according to a specific scene in a certain story. It would be like "Mattemashita!"(待ってました!), literally "I was waiting(for this or you)!" or "Iyo, goryounin!"(いよ、ご両人!), literally "Hey, both of you!" mentioning they are a perfect couple. "Mattemashita!" would also be suitable for her.
Oh, somebody already mentioned this while writing! "Waka" should be used as the future successor of the house, who is very often the eldest son, so I'm not sure if it sounds right for her.

It's simply I didn't think "さくら/Sakura" would sound well fit with the scene. If you want to mention the name of their "training school" to follow the custom of "掛け声/Kakegoe", yelling the performer's "屋号/Yagō", applying "櫻屋/Sakura ya" would be more likely but still feels fake-ish. In that case, I'd prefer "櫻乃学舎/Sakura no Manabiya" but it might sound a bit too long.
But the more important is whether they will feel happy to hear the name of "さくら学院/Sakura Gakuin" as the "掛け声/Kakegoe" at the moment of her "見得/Mie", the climax scene. Since it's no doubt they originated from and grew up there but do not belong anymore.
Moreover, the "name of the performer's training school" is not the only assumed origin of "Yago."
That's all that I thought. I'll be glad if it helps. 😉

The callback to Misora Hibari is interesting, but it's a bit more likely team Babymetal was more inspired by some minyo / pop crossover from the early 2000s like '10nin Matsuri' (that's essentially idol group Morning Musume, or a subunit of it) and their song "Dancing! Natsu Matsuri" (which in itself sounds like a total ripoff of / homage to 'Matsuri Mambo', and uses some of the same melodic lines). I'm sure there were more songs like this, and maybe someone could dig up a few more? Anyway, I would consider this little ditty Babymetal's most Japanese song to date, even more so than 'Megitsune', and I love that it's such a crowd pleaser and banger at the same time.
I'll provide links to the song(s) in comments below, as CZcams's algorithms love to delete those. Let's see.

Every song with that minyo feel just plugs into that collective spirit (for performer and listener alike), and unfortunately this is kinda lost on a lot of Western reviewers who will simply find the singing on this a little bit odd, and of course won't get the kabuki reference. Luckily I've watched enough 'Kabuki Cool' on NHK World to immediately pick up on Momoko's recital style, and I knew that we would get a Mie pose in the video even before it went live. ;-)
