Welcome to my CZcams channel! I'm Andrew, better known as AJ, Hartley. I'm a novelist (International, award winning and New York Times bestselling, for what any of that is worth) and a Shakespeare professor at the University of North Carolina, Charlotte, where (though my Ph.D. is in literature) I mostly work on performance issues. I post about writing, travel, and one of my other passions, the Japanese Kawaii rock band, BabyMetal, though I do analytical discussions of the songs rather than straight reactions. As an artist, scholar, and cultural critic, my interests often overlap, so you may get bits of everything in a single video. Though I realize that I am, as they say, not for all markets, I hope you find bits of what I do entertaining or interesting.
Visiting Northern England: logistics, things to see, and why you should absolutely go.
There's more to England than London and Stone Henge! The North is cheaper and dotted with beautiful and fascinating places located on rugged a landscape and populated by grounded, friendly people. See ancient stone circles, castle and priory ruins, walk the Roman remains of Hadrian's wall, or check out the inspiration for Bram Stoker's Dracula. You should totally check it out. Hopefully his will help a little with planning to do so.

That looks like a great way to cross the river
That is a bridge....
It seems you're at Yuki Shrine, which serves as the "guardian shrine" of Kurama Temple. It's one of a number of shrines on temple grounds across Japan whose enshrined deities serve as protectors of the temples.
My first contact with tengus was the "47 Ronin" movie with Keanu Reeves. I didn't knows there was actually a real world institution that inspired this folklore fiction. Would this be something similar to the Shaolin temple in China? What Is love about your temgu is that he is also a master in Japanese woodworking, a subject that I find utterly fascinating but still know far too little of. Keep enjoying your trip!!
Yes, I incorporated the wood working aspect into HIDEKI as well. It is possible that Whether the Japanese tengu has connections to Chinese folklore seems unclear, but the tengu has various aspects and appearances so it probably combines various narratives and impulses.. They are expressly supernatural, however, so aren't merely human martial arts experts/instructors.
I bet that you never in a million years would have thought that two years later you'd interview Money Mark! It's fascinating how your early AG! fandom continued to grow, culminating in quite the interview coup. Perhaps someday, dare we hope, the Leaders themselves will be answering your questions. I would love that because I know your questions would go well beyond the typically weak questions posed by the entertainment media.
I’d love that too, though I’m not sure what I’d be allowed to ask. I suspect all questions would be vetted in advance and there could be a lot of post recording editing. I had to trim almost half an hour from mark’s interview because he thought he may have said too much at times. Maybe we’ll see one day. Cheers!
Hej, you're having adventures! 😂 Did you find the restaurant or was it two miles downstream?
We did, and it was--as all they food on this trip--excellent!

Since Suzuka is from Hiroshima and we all know what happened there, and their world turned to black and white in an instance. The burning celluloid, the devastated landscape, the umbrella (protection from the radioactive debris) for me are definitely nuclear explosion's indicators, also . The town and the people survived the Ragnarok and bloomed into colors, like Suzuka, who now in her turn, from her monochrome world is painting ours with her voice. This is how I like to conceive this particular song. With this opportunity (first time posting under our beloved professor) I would like to thank him for his tireless effort, his sensitivity, patience, persistence and unique insights. Your posts are precious and cherished, keep the great work going. 👍👍👍👌👌👌🤳

I’m on Episode 8, and I immediately recognize Kube’s dad as….Nagata from Spielberg’s Empire Of The Sun, the Japanese officer with the most interaction with Jim (Christian Bale). He hadn’t aged that much. If you saw that movie, you would immediately recognize him 😊
I haven't seen that movie since it first came out! I'll have to watch it again.

It's a good walk up to the temple. Sei Shonagon famously wrote in "Pillow Book" on the pilgrimage path: 近うて遠きものくらまのつづらおりといふ道. So close yet so far. As was usual with her, multiple meanings folded up in a terse line.
Thanks. Wasn't familiar with that line.

DUDE! 😲 WOW!! I think this is the ONLY video interview with Money Mark in regards to working with ATARASHII GAKKO?? I mean, 88 Rising didn't even present an interview with Money after the success of Pineapple Kryptonite. Good questions that totally got him to open up & reveal some great details. What an opportunity to work with a talented & smart group of women that were right at that "transition" point of their entertainment career, and of their very lives. Man. This was totally Awesome. So great you got this opportunity to interview Money Mark. Nicely done AJ. Nicely done. 🤘
Thanks man. You may be right about this being the only MM interview on AG! I kind of thought it would get more attention, to be honest, but mine is a pretty niche corner of the internet 😬Appreciate the comment!
As someone watching this for the first time over a year later, the speculation around Momo is bringing me no end of joy! 🍑❤

I don't know how I've been subbed and watched so many of your videos for years now AJ and didn't know until today that you had written (now) 3 books with Tom Delonge, whom I've always sort of loosely followed both for his Blink 182 career (I was a teen when their music videos were all the rage on MTV) and his UFO/UAP passion. Mind is kind of blown ngl. Those are two worlds I had never even imagined could co-exist for almost 10 years now and I had no idea :D. For me Prof AJ Hartley was my go-to when I wanted a deep dive into BABYMETAL lyrics with a smile on the face during a reaction. If you'll remember, I was in your "Thank You BABYMETAL" hiatus video as well. Ah well, enjoyed this interview, might look into these books then! Take care Prof ;)
Ha! That's funny. Yeah, it's actually now 5 books with Tom (including the Cathedrals of Glass series) with more to come... Cheers!
You know... I wondered if you would add some dried squid arms for Moametal, just as mentioned in the Uki Uki Midnight lyrics (from interviews, we know based on real life events from the girls at the time).
Nah. Sticking to what I saw in the video and what goes with this song.
@@AndrewHartley understandable, so now that I think about it, Ratata is the spiritual successor of Uki Uki Midnight and iine combined.
@@autohmaeI think so, yes
Superb, highly intelligent commentary on a small-scale work of genius. You might have specifically mentioned the hawk whistle/ magpie sequence - I thought you would when describing the underlying philosophy of the protagonists. It's a scene that makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up (even when just thinking about it).
Thanks for that! Much appreciated.

It looks so beautiful and peaceful. Recently I visited the Japanese gardens in Cowra, NSW, Australia. These gardens are widely regarded as one of the finest examples of Edo period designed gardens outside of Japan. Nearby, there is the only official Japanese war cemetery outside of Japan, where almost 300 Japanese soldiers are laid to rest, most of these men perished in a failed mass escape from the POW camp that was located in Cowra.
Yes, I remember your account of that amazing event. Thanks! And it is very peaceful, yes.

@@lencooke944 Ha!
@@AndrewHartley while you are close to your computer; I have finished Trinity and was so impressed I left a 5-star review on Amazon. My question is, where do I go next in your catalogue, the Steplejack books or Cathedrals of Glass? I am also waiting for the release of Tom's and Peter Levenda's third instalment of Sekret Machines: War to be released, I don't know if there is a release date set for that yet, but I'm hoping it's soon. Thanks for your advice.
@@lencooke944 Up to you. They are quite different in tone and setting, but have some overlapping concerns. CATHEDRALS is sci-fi with a psychological suspense tone sometimes close to horror. There are 2 with a 3rd to come. STEEPLEJACK is technically fantasy but reads like alternate history set in a world that looks like a Victorian metropolis in South Africa. It's more mystery and adventure. There are 3 and a short story.
Did you say "northwest"? You're in northeast Kyoto. (Just noticed you corrected that.) Behind you is a depiction of Bodhidharma-known as "Bodai Daruma" or "Daruma Daishi" or simply "Daruma" in Japan. Maybe best known to Westerners in the Daruma Doll form. He is credited with bringing Chan Buddhism to China. Japanese Zen is derived from Chan Buddhism, and Enkō-ji is a temple of Rinzai Zen.
Yeah, as I said in the description? I meant northeast 😊

I don’t know how to say this. In last time in Japan I went to a few temples as I appreciate them and the culture. I definitely appreciate the morality as a Christian. In short, we are not so different if you open your heart. This is just my two cents as a combat veteran.

Awesome video! I’ve never had the pepper vodka, so I’m looking forward to making that most of all.
Pepper vodka is also easy to make. Just infuse a cheap but drinkable vodka with a couple of dried cayenne peppers for a few days. The more pepper you use and the longer you infuse, the stronger it will be.
Thank you so much! I will definitely try them out! :)
Hope you enjoy!
