My dad just got pretty much this exact car. Except he had the wood trim and wood steering wheel.

I really want to like the look of that car the same way I loved the 2003 model when I first saw it but this model just hasn't grown on me.
patfromozZ I'm with you, the 2003 R230 SL, as it was called, was so much sexier than the current one, with those round headlights and sleek bodylines. The 2003 is still my second favorite SL after the original 1954 W198 300SL.
I prefer this to the R230.
I can tell that this car can be quite a handful indeed...beautiful machine!
Just bought a low mileage 2014 R231 SL500 (called SL550 in USA) in Hyacinth red with cream leather. Love the looks, love the way it drives. Love the quality, Love the very high performance. A lot more than i expected. No need for AMG63.
And I appreciate that it's an almost all aluminium engineering masterpiece. Probably a long term investment. As i can't see such masterpieces being made in future.
Yet not much dearer than an SLK55 of similar mileage & age. But a lot more car for the money.
Would have cost around £40k more than the SLK55 new but all this for only around £3k more second hand.
Though the SLK is excellent as a smaller roadster with a large engine. Horses for courses.
My dad just got my mom one of these and its AMAZING! you'd have to drive it to understand why it costs $115k, the torque is insane, and i got obsessed with pressing the gas a little to hear the turbos spool up lol

Its called "Magic Sky Control". The roof glass is electrochromic (like a rearview mirror). The intensity of light distribution through the glass is variable. AKA: at the press of a button, the roof can darken or brighten. Mercedes needed to make back some of the money invested in the Maybach's "modular roof system"...
I have been looking at M6, M3, M4, Boxsters, 350z and etc. I never thought to check out the SL, but it was love at first sight. I am going to buy one of these as a weekend car within a year......unless C7 drop 10k :)

I've got a 2004 SL55 AMG and I almost "never" drive it in Sport mode; this beast is driven "strictly in MANUAL!" :-) Let's get another with manual shift...
True but can't one change it after purchasing the car or will it not pass the safety inspections and cops might target it?
I think it might be a strobe effect between the LCD display and the frame rate of the video camera.
I really want one so bad!!! I'll have to work extra hard to earn and buy this~! wait for me Merc! :D

Great car. My mother has always been in love with the MB SL-class. However I didn't realize that the SL is so tail-happy. During the video the tail spun out many times. Was the ESP turned off or something?

Where I live in Washington State nobody follows the speed limit, you will see regular cars going 40-50 on a 30 MPH speed limit area. And the free way its 70-80. Cops do the same even when just driving without sirens

How was the ride overall in means of comfort? Was it rough or smooth?
Yes
cause he set the gearbox to "S=sports" mode and not in "M=Manual" which basically means the gearbox keeps the rpm/gear for best and quick acceleration. If he would have been in "M" the car will do everything the Driver wants it to do. 7G-Tronic Plus is fine. OFC you should take the 7MCT-Speedshift if you want a high performance gearbox. Dont tell shit to people you dont even have a clue about.

i'm confused because in germany we can decide between a sl 350; sl 500; sl 63 amg; sl 65 amg; but theres no sl 550 ... but nice car ! :D

on 5:08 you can see, that the gearbox doesn´t shift down when the driver want it to do. The DKG from an M3 is way better.

no not diesel bro. it is noisy for your taste because M Benz and BMW do not use time-belt. like cadillac who are first introduce it in the late 90s. although who invented the time-belt is german but yet german manufacturer are not convinced to use it. it is due to reliability and maintenance that time belt need to be changed every80 to 120,000 km. Honda don't use it too.

There hasn't been and probably never will be a Mercedes SL with a disel engine. The diesel like knocking is caused by the direct injection. But a diesel engine still sounds very different.
There is no V6, and there is no 350, al SL's are v8/v12, the sl350 v6 you talk about is probably the SLK, which is 350 v6.

Great car! Love the new SL. I test drove an SL65 AMG and that thing was the best car i've ever driven! That car is alive! It's like an insane, sexy woman, unleashing hell on the world! I love that car! BTW: Where did you mount the camera. On a hat/ helmet or something. I want to make such a video, but i have no idea where to put the camera...
