It seems to me that Mephiles does have one clear, relatable motive, even if it's never stated outright. He wants to be whole. He is missing half of himself. He's empty without his other half. He stops at nothing to be whole again.
Doesn't make him redeemable as a person, but it's just one more interesting layer to his character.
Answering the ending question, he's by far the best Sonic villain in my opinion. He's more threatening than Chaos, more manipulative than Professor Gerald, and more…of a character than Infinite.
Every time I see the scene where he does a little spin as he exits from the camera's view, it reminds me that the creepy factor combined with his total unpredictability just makes him a joy to watch.
I'm glad you commented this, as I was about to. He has pretty subtle but, to me, very clear motives: he wants revenge on Shadow and to once again become Solaris.
Other than that, I think I agree with most other points in this video.

Thank you so much for this comment. I've been shipping Mephiles and Iblis for years, but it's out of a subjective sentiment. The subtle, unspoken "drive" for Mephiles's character progression is because he's a lonely babby and hates the people who separated him from his bae. Wrote of fanfic about it, about 8 yrs. ago now...

Mephiles the Dark was a great villain. I loved his interactions between Shadow and Silver. The only villain to have killed Sonic as well. I personally liked 06 despite its flaws. My favourite things about 06 were of course Mephiles, Silver, Shadow's Story and the final story when Sonic comes back to life.
We can all agree, Mephiles was a true God.

I really like mephlis his design,his personality the whole aura around him and his tone as a character makes him such a great villian.
Mephiles is intimidating but also cute in part because of his gentleman-like mannerism, so, in Japan, he was pretty popular when Niconico Video was in full swing.
As much as i love mephiles, I think it was a smart move to make him a one off villain even though he's from a glitchy game. Why you may ask? Well here's the thing. If they brought back mephiles what could they really do with him? He already brought darkness to the world, he merged with iblis, he managed to beat shadow and kill sonic. Not to mention the fact that he got erased from existence. So what would really be the point of bringing him back. Even if they did brought him back, they might ruin his character kinda like what they do with other characters they brought back. That's why we need a new villain that can be just as successful as mephiles was or even surpass mephiles popularity. Infinite could've been that villain but we know how that ended. Let's just hope the next potential villain could at least come close to mephiles.

It's such a shame that SEGA don't do anymore villains like this any more, ,Mephiles was the best Sonic villain and nobody even come colse to him, he has goals and no matter who die along the way as long he will be one with ibilis to become Solaris, I wished infinite was more like him.

I loved mephiles. The only problem I really had with him was he and sonic barely interacted. I feel like him killing him would be more impactful if they interacted with each other a bit.
To be fair, it seems that Sonic could have tried to stop Mephiles if he knew about him hence why he didn't interact or even have Sonic know about him.

The way Mephiles fights, he’s fights a cowardly way, always attacking you from behind.
When you play as Shadow, once you turn your back on him, Mephiles will attack you when your back is turn.

I am so glad to see more love for Mephiles& 06 as well! Mephiles is such an interesting character and I agree with all of your points. I really love the kinda connection they made with mephistopheles, the devil in Goethes Faust who is also very deceiving and never gives a clear answer. I also love his lines like "The answer is yes and no" which shows this and like...technically he is right. xD (when shadows asks him if he ruined crisis city/the future world) Also sonic team has so much they could do with him further, like I really really want a Silver the Hedgehog game where Mephiles kinda possesses/corrupts Blaze (because he is literal darkness-he can take any shape and form which is supercool!) because Blaze might or might not have a part of Iblis inside as her as well(when she sealed herself with the flames and saves the future they both came from) and Silver has to prove himself and go beyond his limits to save Blazes world. Or the theory that a part of Solaris is in the time eater and/or the phantom ruby...I just love to dig into this theories but I sadly think that they never make something like that happen. And if they bring him back then please with the writer(s) he had in Sonic 06/someone who understands his character. I just think he has soo much potential just sitting and waiting for an infinity - speaking of Infinite who even does the same pose as him and many theorized they have some sort of connection but...no. Solaris is the only Sonic villain who actually threaten the universe not just a planet. Eggman states that Solaris could eat dimensions for lunch which goes to show how freaking powerful he truly is. Solaris is also the most impressive feat Super Sonic had ever face because the only time he really needed help was in Adventure 2 with Shadow but now even those two combine couldn't defeat him which is why Silver was needed. Its just crazy how powerful Mephiles and Solaris truly are and no other sonic villain currently is that threating.
Sega sources show that Super Sonic would already be able to do 1v1 fight with Solaris. Also Sonic gets more powerful every second. Do you remember how he defeated Perfect Chaos in Generations without using his super form.
@@spinony359 The problem with Super Sonic fighting Solaris alone is who's going to be there to stop solaris in past and future? Solaris was stated to exist in past, present and future. I doubt Sonic would be able to handle all of that by himself but then again I could be proven wrong.

Mephiles is my favorite Sonic villain! When I saw he killed Sonic it suprised me and made me realize he's the darkest villain EVER in Sonic history. And if he comes back he'll want revenge on Sonic and Elise for erasing him from existence! Sort of... I really wanna see him back.

Imagine if the writers had some sense of good plot stories, and they made a game in which Infinite comes back with revenge to Sonic, Shadow, and everyone else, but this time he brings Mephiles (and probably an army of Dark Gaia creatures) to attack them. This time Chip or Elise arent here due to them being asleep or ruling their kingdom. Therefore, Silver calls for Blaze's help, while Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles go and find the help of Cream, Big, Mighty, Ray, Tangle, Whisper, Jet, and a few other characters to help the Resistance fight against this army of overpowered creatures. Sonic won't he able to turn into the Werehog, so Knuckles, Shadow, Silver, and Blaze that can fight will take care of Dark Gaia's army. Meanwhile the others will have some levels to run around zones and fight some minions. At the end, the three main hedgehogs will use the Chaos Emeralds, while Blaze uses the Sol Emeralds, and Knuckles shares power of the Master Emerald with Tails, so that they can go into a final ultra battle with Mephiles, Dark Gaia, and Infinite. They will end Infinite's power of illusions once and for all by getting rid of the Phantom Ruby with their super forms. Also the villains will have a super form in the final battle.
I never played Sonic 06 but I have admiration for its villain and story which makes it one of the better sonic games. If this ever gets remastered I'll definitely play it

06 seems to be get a Xbox backward compatibility on Xbox so that might spark it so it can be fixed and remastered
As a villain, Memphis Tennesse truly had a great presence in 06 that Forces could've really used. I would love to see Mephiles expanded upon in a Sonic adaptation (with great writing of course, not the Sonic Movie stuff :P). Though, my favorite villains have to be, in no particular order, Metal Sonic, Scourge, and Dr. Eggman.

Mephiles without a doubt is my favourite Sonic villain. Cold, calculating, menacing and a complete ham at times, he just has the charisma to keep you invested. I heard a while back he was meant to come back in Forces but was turned down sadly. Until then, I'll keep having him cameo in cartoons. Chicken, Flower, Egg, Seed.
Mephiles is good villian because he intelligence, calculating, calm, ruthless, and scary. He not a joke of a villian. He threatening to everyone to everyone who lived in time and reality. He love chaos and despair to the point that he don't care what happened to his allies, seeing them nothing more as tool. I hope in the future he come back because he too good of a villian to not develop him even more.
Do you know when Amy put a bow on Metal Sonic in Mania Adventures? Mephiles is that at 06, a village that despite coming from that game, gives us pride to exist, and sadness that did not participate in anything better. He, along with Chaos and Merlina, are the great good villains of the series. In the series of games I think the best, in the general series is in 2nd, losing only to Mammoth Mogul of Archie Comics.

Mephiles is one of my favorite villains of the series along with Metal and the Doctor himself. Mephiles felt like one of the most threatening foes in the series. Mephiles is a chessmaster and has a very unsettling aura and mannerisms. He also has a really cool design and is capable of getting things done. Also, there’s a lot I love about 06. Everyone knows that it could use more polish, but I’d rather play it again over Forces any day
I miss Mephiles, as it provided us a greater perspective on what Sonic Villians could be. If Iblis is the heart of Solaris, then Mephiles is its cunning mind and I quite enjoy the lengths he goes to just to achieve his ultimate goal. Mephiles actually felt like a threat, he was always unsettling when he appeared on screen and you just knew he was capable of fucking you over in some fashion.

Mephiles easily surviving his fight with Shadow is no surprise consider he and Iblis are canonically both immortal. He can't be killed or destroyed, just sealed away (again, the same goes with Iblis). Also, it's sub-textually implied that the prime reason Mephiles wanted to wipe out existence, was because humanity split Solaris in a foolish attempt to abuse it's power in search for "control over fate." As the consciousness of Solaris, he was essentially the god's malice incarnate, which is likely what forms his cruel personality.

Mephiles had a clear motive to become complete much like Cell prior to achieving Perfect Form. However Mephiles was much more sadistic being a cruel Sun Deity who wanted to destroy the world just because humans desired his power. He was also possibly the most powerful & dangerous villain in the series as Solaris. Even with 3 Hedgehogs in their Super Forms working together they can't kill Solaris, only put it to sleep with only a paradox of Elise blowing out the flame that eventually became it being able to stop it & even then it's speculated Solaris may have survived.

Probably my favorite part about Mephiles as a villain is how he develops the characters and forces them to grow--Shadow must notably. The way Mephiles tries to break Shadow's will and spirit with the betrayal of humanity and Omega in the future but fails due to how much he's grown in the previous games and the support of his friends is fantastic. By the end, Shadow has finally fully figured out and come to terms with who he is and what he'll do, thus finishing a character arc that had occurred over several games and has now faced his past, present, and future.
I like Mephiles as a villain, I really do, but there are some major issues with him and he is by no means perfect. Unlike "SONICSTA," I am particularly disappointed by Mephiles's lack of motive, mainly because of how much potential there was to give him a good and interesting motive but, just like the game as a whole, that potential wasn't realized and was wasted. There was a clear opportunity to give Mephiles a motive in seeking revenge for the Solaris Project--Solaris was worshiped by the people of Soleanna as a deity that watched over them, but they tried to control him and use him as a tool and ended up braking him into two pieces, this betrayal to their "benevolent" deity could've lead Solaris, now Mephiles, deeming them, and people as a whole, to be unworthy of him and his "light"--and that's just with the backstory he has now, and so much more could've been done with the proper changes.
My biggest issue with Mephiles, however, is that it is never explained or addressed why he goes through such a complicated, risky, and difficult plan to try to release Iblis instead of just killing Sonic at the right moment--or heck, kill Elise immediately since that was also stated, and even directly shown, to work as well.
I've seen fans try to argue various reasons and theories as to why this might be and explain this plothole, one being that it's just because he loves causing the most pain possible. While that's better than no reason at all, it's still a poor one and feels like a handwave explanation (since it is) to justify the plot's use of him as a tool rather than actually being a part of the character and story.
Another explanation is that he knows that Sonic is one of the only beings that can hope to destroy Solaris and wants to eliminate him to prevent that from happening, thus leading him to try to kill Sonic--and in order to make Elise cry at Sonic's death, he creates more problems (namely Silver) for the two to get through and spend more time together. This sounds great at first, but it just falls apart immediately when you remember that, again, killing Elise works as well and he could just kill her after Sonic if doing so failed to make her cry--he doesn't have to place all his bets on one option after all.
The best reason I've seen--though I had to add quite a bit to actually make it work--is that he wants to get his revenge on Shadow first, and, leading off of part of the previous theory, wants to take advantage of the situation to kill Sonic and prevent him from stopping him after he joins with Iblis. For this though, we have to assume that Mephiles can only time travel himself to periods where he wasn't already present (so he can't be in two places at once). This would finally explain why he bothers using Silver to accomplish his goal (as well as fix some other things). If Mephiles wants to kill Sonic and release Iblis at the same time, but is busy dealing with Shadow while Sonic is with Elise, then he could use Silver to do so instead. This theory isn't without its own issues though, such as why Mephiles sent Silver to kill Sonic in the present before he knew that Shadow could/did manage to return to the present (and would thus cause him to be busy while Sonic is with Elise), but I think it is better than the rest.
However, none of these explanations or theories can fix that none was provided in the original game.
TLDR:
My favorite part about Mephiles as a villain is how he forces Shadow to develop as a character and grow closer to his friends. I do have major issues with him though. I am disappointed at how much potential for his motive there was that was wasted--revenge for the Solaris Project could've been a great motive. The biggest issue though is the plothole that he can just release Iblis himself and didn't have to try to manipulate others for an overly complicated plan. Fans have tried to provide explanations for this plothole, but it's really difficult and doesn't fix the issue in the game.
When you think about it Mephiles is an alternate version of Cell from Dragon Ball Z, they both will stop at nothing to become whole or.......PERFECT!

That ol' Dan Green gave a swell villain laugh with Mephiles. He pulled that off when the Pharaoh was under the Seal of Orichalcos' control.
Still my favorite sonic game. Can't wait to go back to it again! Mephiles may not be THE best but he's definitely up there! People criticize silver as well for just taking his word on sonic being the iblis trigger. If I was in his position I'd try anything, what have I to lose?

I have a headcanon idea of where defeating Solaris causes a split in the timeline where it causes the Colors Era to exist because of it. Which later on you discovered that Mephiles survived and defeating him again would fix the timeline split and erase the Colors timeline. But I doubt Sega will even go that route. As much I would like that to happen.
He is one of the best villans in fiction and falls in chategory of psycho safistic manipulators (my favourite villan sterotype)

Also my opinion on 06 - i have noticed some people coming to actually liking the game a little - I've always loved the game. I even love its flaws, some may be annoying, but it could never make me hate my very first sonic game. I get where some people come from but that's their opinions and I like where I stand. Even if the community will hate me.

Mephiles isnt even unique though. He is boneless Black Boom. But with no real character. Behavior is incredibly contrived as well.
I never got the impression he wanted to cause destruction and chaos either, unlike Black Doom who does just that and says so loud and clear.

One thing about Mephiles that I really like, that's hard to convey with just words, is his animations.
Sonic 06's cutscenes, while HD for the time and in Shadow and Silver's stories' cases actually narratively intriguing, the animations themselves are clearly really shitty mocap. It's like humans are wearing the characters as suits in a Power Rangers show, with the way heads just whip around to look at things, and all the arm flapping, and the generally limp movement of the characters overall.
The thing is, while for all the other characters, this animation really detracts from their scenes, with MEPHILES, it's a whole other story.
All of his movements are so perfectly uncanny thanks to the shitty mocap.
In his first scene with Shadow, he's limping forward like a newly awakened zombie, or some eldritch creature getting used to moving in a body that mortal minds could comprehend.
When he starts moving more dramatically in, say, the scene where he frames Silver's future on Sonic, how showy and stilted his movements are really serves to highlight his nature, as a villain BEYOND Sonic 06's cast in power, but petty enough to engage in theatrics to enhance his manipulations.
In another scene with Silver and Blaze, he deadass says goodbye with a pirouette, and just slides off screen with that spin, not to be seen again for a long while. With any other character it'd be the goofiest shit in the world and, while still a little goofy, it has some sort of otherworldy grace to it???
Honestly I'd emplore anyone to go and look up all his cutscenes. Mephiles is, on accident, a MASTERPIECE in mocap animation.
I actuallydon't really mind the motion-capture animations. If the humans around Sonic moves realistically, it makes sense that sonic will move that way too.

also about the game i didn't really like it because of all the glitches in parts of it, such a blaze not working sonic's speed lagged and eggman's robot dog thing clearly needed less glitches and more fairness in being hit. but i did like the backgrounds it had in the game.
but still i'd give the 4 in a half stars out of 10, because of the glitches.

Sonic 06 is a pretty rad game. Definitely not the best imo, but it did a lot right. I feel like a lot of people bash it because big CZcamsrs bash it without ever mentioning any of the good things the game has to offer and people follow suit because mob mentality. Doesn't help it's only been released on two now outdated consoles with no backwards compatability, so most people nowadays can't try it for themselves anymore either.

I have a feeling Shadow will become the "new" Mephiles the Dark in future Sonic games for some reason.
Sonicguru made a theory on why Elise crying would release Iblis, that being cry in despair. And 06 is my favorite Sonic game.

Tbh as a villian mephiles isn't all that special or unique, since alot of his traits and characteristics or qualities can easily be incorporated, even if its in the form of a villian that has a motive rather than just being the embodiment of darkness. Overall yes, I would like to see more villians like that or with these similar traits, but executed better or more uniquely.
As for the game 06, the whole story itself needs way too much major fixing especially in the story department if it ever wants to be successful so screw a remaster or remake. I think the most logical thing to do espcially for the future success of this franchise, is move on from this failure and focus on making something newer and better taking inspirations from games like the adventure series and so fourth, since I think too many ppl are needlessly going into too much depth with this 06 junk, although it had ambition I think its way past overdue to now to let it still have an affect to the series, especially when you consider it came out literally 15yrs ago now, basically a decade and a half....
People want stories in the style of SA2 and that was a few years before 06. How long ago something was does not matter when it comes to using it as an inspiration.

My point was that everyone seems to overlook alot of things in 06, and they keep on bragging about it as if its still relevant, which In most cases it really isn't and shouldn't be, so thats why it gets frustrating when I hear ppl constantly bring it up. But for sure I really do want this franchise to return to back to the adventure formula both in narrative and gameplay perspective, but in an sustainable manner rather then just scrapping it all to gether.

I have to disagree on the idea that Villains who lack a quality of being redeemable are "Bad Villain", as you said Mephiles makes it work and so do many other villains as well.

Sauron is a Fallen Maiar (Similar to an Angel/Demon) who wants to establish an iron rule over all of Middle Earth.
These Villains are not relateable or redeemable, they are Monsters and sometimes stories need a Monster who is able to challenge the protagonists at full throttle. There's no trying to appeal to a better side of them or a sense of honor because those kinds of things tend to be irrelevant to them, all they need is a goal and will probably stop at nothing to achieve it.

Mephiles is inhumane. I guess he's supposed to be the Sonic's universe Satan. He's a planet eater or a dimension eater when he becomes one with iblis, Solaris. Who yearned for destruction and chaos. His true motive is to get Shadow to go break and destroy all of humanity while he gets Silver to do the dirty work of killing Sonic so that he can merge with iblis.
What I do not understand too much is how is blaze in sth06. Sonic and blaze most likely met before the events leading up to 06.

I disagree that villains that are not relatable are bad. Yes there are bad villains that are evil for the sake of evil but there are just as many good villains that are evil for the sake of evil. Just like there are tons of bad relatable villains and good relatable villains. I think it has to do with how the characters are handled. Neither is objectively bad at all but can be handled poorly. Not every villain needs to or should be relatable in some way. If every villain ever were to be relatable it would be boring.

The game and the story line of it is horrible, i just wish mephiles and iblis story were about something else then that. The story if Elise, Soleanna and Solaris is horrible. I’m just mad at the game, but mephiles is a pretty good character, scary but good. Just the story of it is bad.
ehhhh your reasoning that he has no motive is pretty shaky. you said yourself he wants revenge on shadow which is by definition a motive. and his goal isnt to release the flames of disaster, its to rejoin with iblis and become his true self Solaris. he isnt supposed to be a relatable humane villan. hes an extra-dimensional god yearning to return to his true form. more of a force of nature than any kind of villan we as the audience are supposed to understand or empathize with. he cannot be reasoned with or stopped, and every aspect of his plan succeeded flawlessly. the entire cast of sonic 06 was woefully unequipped todeal with a threat of his caliber, and only by using 3 super forms in different time periods were they able to brute force overpower him. no clever plan by tails, no convincing him to be a good guy, he simply won and all they could do was react to his overwhelming power.
