Don't avoid the issue - his weight is a problem both for departmental public relations and the safety of other members. This fire department's leadership obviously does not think his obesity is an issue.
The fire pole is mostly a thing of the past now, most stations just use stairs these days. A fire pole can be a huge safety risk. Some stations still use them though.
For that being a volunteer station, that’s pretty damn nice.
