That's irrelevant. You wouldn't try to stab through a European breastplate in the first place. But this "Breastplate" was made out of tin. It's annoying when they compare Longswords and Katana in cutting power because anyone who knows anything knows that on average a Katana *should* cut better, it's simply physics and blade geometry. However, there are a lot of different kinds of Longswords, especially in comparison to Katana, so there are Longswords that can cut better or at least on par with a Katana. And I mean an actual historical Katana, the modern Katana are longer than they really were, naturally making them cut better than they really did. @@stickcon9766 So, 1. I think you meant to ask, "Since when were you able to *do* the same?" Always pays to proof read. 2. It's not too difficult, just takes a bit of training. Proper grip and stance is fundamental and what you would learn first with any weapon or martial art style. You can't swing a katana like a broadsword/longsword. It's almost like trying to out-box a Kung Fu practitioner. Katanas are meant to slice, so you should "push" with the top hand and "pull" with your back hand to really emphasize the cut. You're only wanting to really do this with the last 4 inches of the blade. Long swords are a bit more intuitive, however their main use is for thrusting, both to pierce armor and puncture the weak points/openings in armor. This info is pretty well known, even if you haven't taken any formal or informal training as I have. I know you may just be a troll, but I figured you asked so I answered. Have a good one!

Wtf There is a nice analysation by metatron of this "Test" In short: it's not a good test when you switch the cuts or use the weapons in different ways,... This is more a promotion for the katana than a real test
True but there is a lot of headroom for having a very strong rigid sword that is very hard to damage, you can get more rigid longswords and less rigid katanas, they are all forged differently
That's exactly why katana's are clay tempered, a harder cutting edge to keep its edge on contact and a softer spine to allow flex and avoid the blade just snapping
@@mollies13 A katana is not god-like weapon for every situation. And there's no such material with such capabilities. A sword must be able to bend somewhat to not shatter or break. Katanas don't have this because they are made in a different way as the majority of European swords. And they are made with the main principle of cutting. That's why they must maintain rigid. Meanwhile a longsword is also expected to thrust and not just cut, and if you make it rigid it could break easily. And you must also take into account the really different methods used to forge these types of swords. And also the European steel was way better than what the Japanese had. The European had better methods of forging actually.
The test would've gone better if he knew how to use a longsword, if he hadn't damaged the tip of the longsword before the test started AND if they had used an actual armor instead of whatever that was (was that aluminum?)... Oh, and used similar attacks on the mannequins.
How the hell did this dude get more penetration with a Katana than with a long sword, a weapon designed for slashing is better at punching through armor than a weapon designed to thrust? By that logic a fucking spear would be useless against armor
Noraini Ayub Yeah and? You do know that they only did that because of the impurities of the metal they used, they did this to remove the impurities that they could and the ones they couldn't remove they made it so that they were evenly distributed, while in Europe the metal was as pure as it could get at the time, the Japanese solution is genius no doubt, but the metal doesn't hold up to European metal at all
@@norainiayub2150 Europeans came up with the same method way earlier (called Damascus steel), they later abandoned it because they were capable of creating better steel due to higher temperatures in their forges
No it wasn't. Europe had "better" quality iron to make steel and they had more of it. The steel itself wasn't better. For the majority of time MOST European swords were very soft, spring steel was much rarer than people make it seem. Japan also had spring steel as well. czcams.com/video/5djVkOgu8vs/video.html
@@Bourikii2992 Yeah, no. Spring steel wasn't rarer. It wasn't a type of ore as well. First, there are many records and artifacts that show European longswords were built with spring steel. And secondly, European furnaces were much superior than Japan's (Their furnaces were capable of properly melting iron to properly distribute the carbon into steel) whereas Japan's used Bloomery Furnaces that didn't fully melt the steel (Although they used the Tatara but it's essentially just a larger Bloomery furnace). Then, they get this slab of iron called "Tamahagene" (Idk the proper spelling) and have to break up chunks from the iron and steel (The steel shines brighter similar to silver). And also modern katanas use spring steel because they figured that it is way better.
Actually his edge alignment was off and so the Longsword failed the katana is a much more forgiving weapon for the unskilled so in his hands it was always gonna end up on top, but his ignorance isn't purposeful.

@@hehe_boi9181 sure but European knights were a different league with superior gear not just in practicality and design but also material. Japan has shit for natural metal
The testing material is very wrong, they use different cutting techniques and angles, and the dummies are inadequate for getting proper results. In my opinion of a half Japanese guy, I love the katana but it's not the supreme weapon that over powers all others, the katana, like all other swords, has its strengths and weaknesses. The katana was built for cutting through the armor that the samurai wore and that armor was made out of many layers of stacked paper (depending on the era). The katana made a better hole in the European armor because it doesn't flex as much and the longsword with less flex comes more energy transfer into the receiving body. The forging process requires the katana's blade to be folded over and over again to strengthen the blade, the more folds the stronger the blade, however, the longsword is made with just a piece of metal and is hammered into shape with the hardening process of quenching, both of these processes are different due to the difference in use. (sorry if this structure doesn't make too much sense I'm just too tired and felt like going on a little rant)

Europeans started making swords from hardened steel in 700 BC, Japanese in 1500 AD, according to this video, most history teachers and all Hollywood movies, this is about the same time (2200 years earlier in Europe, for those who's math teacher was as talented as their history one).
I like how they didn't finish the swing against the iron or whatever armor it was with both the katana and the longsword, with the katana it's especially important to make a nice long swing so hitting someone like that is just stupid.
I knew if we scrolled down we would find the neckbeards seething. However this is the case on every professional tier video, they use a real Katana that is worth around 9k at minimum, and it does perform highly. Then we have these neckbeards reference other amateur youtube channels who use replica katana's, things that are simply moulds, and then they abuse those things that aren't even real Katana's and claim that Katana sucks, so cringe.
Unfortunately, that is incorrect. The video was professional in anything but the tests themselves. And on top of that, there was no mention mention of either of the swords' heritage and construction
This is probably the best comment here. Who’s going to do real stress tests on an actual high quality antique? Only an idiot. These are all replicas and sometimes made using modern methods. The quality of steel, varied throughout history. So after the 17th century (when steel manufacturing and quality controls were better in Europe) the long sword wasn’t bad (Sabre for some reason became more popular tho). But before that it was a crapshoot. And for the Japanese, their swords weren’t perfect either (some were higher quality than others historically also), but they did have techniques to vary the carbon content of the steel and purify their iron from very early on. The highest quality swords found from both cultures, which came much later in history, were very comparable, because good steel is good steel, simple as that. All of these tests are ridiculous, because it’s basically one form of modern steel vs another. With the Katana having varying carbon content between the spine and the edge, if the replica is “more accurate”. That all said, a pre-17th century Katana probably would have had a better chance at cutting through a pre-17th century long sword though, on average.😉
this doesn't make any sense because long swords were meant against armor samurai swords are not sharper or bent lesser there the same the only difference is that long swords are double-edged and hade a better point and were not saber-like blades and a better guard than samurai swords the plate armor is not even actual armour and these guys don't know how to use a katana or a long sword there not putting their body weight in stabs or slashes the long sword in the video is not the equal match because it's blunt purposely blunt the only thing about the blunt sword he barely half swords or stab because they know that the stab would penetrate so when they went up against there so-called plater armor the long sword blade flexed purposely they didn't use a normal long sword maybe its a sparing long sword because long swords didn't be like this historically accuratelly.
I do agree with you on the Long Sword being blunt I could tell this wasn't accurate on the long sword however their Samurai sword also wasn't up to standard forge. However Samurai swords where made to cut threw bone and Flesh just as well Japanese armor is still hard to penetrant. They cut through it easily. The way the test Katana's is A tameshigiri (test cut) was performed with a newly forged katana by slicing through a stack of dead bodies or even live criminals. Of course, tameshigiri could only be done by a master swordsman to ensure the quality of the build. Katana made right can penatrate Plate armor. However the long sword also would have went through it as well. also samurai also used another type of weapon more so it was a long bladed staff like weapon which also very much so go through plate armor. I am convinced the winner in a fight though between Samurai and Knight would be more skill dependent one would win.

YES! I always laugh at those weebs claiming the katana to be the god of all swords. Don't get me wrong, the katana is an interesting weapon and does a good job for what it is MEANT to do. But the longsword was more versatile and the European steel was way better than the katanas. This video is just an insult to European smithery.
Late to the party, but swords can't split other swords, especially if they were moving in active combat. Don't unjustify a busted myth with another soon to be busted myth. All swords have pros can cons on their given situation from each other. I hope you all should know this.
This episode was clearly aimed at making the katana look good. The reality is that they were design for different types of combat. They were both better at different things. They did use a shitty longsword. The longsword was very light and was designed to thrust in weak points or openings in armor while being used as a slashing blade. Katanas were designed for single combat and not good against armor in reality. They are prone to breakage as the steel needed to be hardened unlike european blades.
@@Saxton_Hoovy Nope a longsword is a secondary. The primary weapons that would be used by knights would be pole axes as Knights swords are simply ineffective in getting through armour without feats of skill. Hollywood always tend to exaggerate their uses.

The Aztecs in central America used weapons similar to swords known as macuahuitl, which had edges made of obsidian that could be as sharp if not far sharper than any steel blade. 😂
Because, well, the test was clearly made in favor of the katana. 1. The armor shown on the video was made really, really bad. Literally sheet metal turn into an armor. 2. The longsword was BLUNT and you can clearly see that through the video. 3. They used the longsword wrong multiple times while they did some actual rather good cutting motions with the katana. If you have actual idea of how European smithery was or how well thought and made those armors and swords were made then you'll know how bad this video does to European smithery. No sword, no matter if it's a longsword or a katana, can cut through armor (actual good armor unlike shown here). And don't get me wrong, the katana is a really interesting sword and was good for what it was meant, but the longsword was better made, had more versatility and in some cases they were lighter than katanas.
"Video: clearly showing that a katana cuts better than the longsword" If you think this is what the video "clearly" showed, youre misguided kiddo. Anyone who actually understand *both* of these weapons complains- for a lot of reasons.
Longsword seems off, like not sharp enough or bad quality blade. Im surprised to see the Katana didnt completely bend when stabbing the armor or chopping the ice. I was expecting it to get wrecked.
I swear we need real experts with the genuine weapons to test this all I want to see is if a katana would be effective against plate armour. Now I would say “I know it wouldn’t be.” But I haven’t seen any proof
@@epicgamer551 Did you seriously just say that? Blunt weapons are literally one of the only effective forms of weaponry for countering plate armour. It's not as if it's thick steel. It dents easily and that's the idea. What weak points are you talking about? A blunt weapon is meant for damage, not accuracy
@@Icarus_Qwq Very not true, blunt weapons weren't any better compared to other things because properly made armor doesn't just crumple when hit with a stick, if it did blunt weapons are all people would have used. But when you look at muster rolls, inventories, and even art from the period it was predominantly filled with swords and spears and other polearms, rarely maces or warhammers. And as for weakpoints there are absolutely better areas to hit with a blunt weapon, just as there are better areas to hit with a sword. The primary weakpoints aimed at are as follows. The head, more specifically the visor if one was worn. While a helmet shot was rarely likely to outright kill the person underneath, it can be very jarring and disorienting, making a person easier to grapple, or wear down faster in a fight, or if a visor was worn, targeting the visor was a good strategy as it could pop the rivets holding it to the hinge, opening up the face to strikes. The neck is always a good weakpoint to aim for, even when fully enclosed metal gorgets come around, as the plates here are still fairly thin, meaning if a strong blunt strike was landed it could hamper head movement. Shoulders were one of the best targets to strike with any large weapon, blunt or not, as there are many large nerves in the shoulder, and shoulder armor could generally be broken from it's arming points easier. Knee shots are also a very good area to hit, but can be better or worse depending on if your opponent is wearing a harness with a riveted construction or a floating construction, but better than hoping it's a floating harness you could also just strike the back of the knee, where there is no armor. Beyond these weakpoints blunt weapons were fairly useless against armor. Striking the breastplate is never a good idea and is only a wasted attack. The arms and hands seem like they would be a good target but in practice they move far too much, and will just move with the force of a swing, unlike the legs, which will be sturdy and grounded. Blunt weapons were not magical armor crushers that any barely trained peasant could pick up and swing around with a bit of gusto and instantly kill twenty knights. They were simply a different breed of weapon that had it's own rules to follow.
Where is the European sword in this video? Is the cheap Walmart sword which doesn't resemble any actual medieval weapons supposed to be the "European" sword?
this was not accurate enough. i am suing you for being so inaccurate. my lawysers are coming for you. not in a sus way. #democrat for life. biden is life and daddy.
For those disliking the video, the katan was mainly used for slashing and cutting and the long sword was used more for brute force as in breaking bone and going through armor thats why the long sword and the katana were so diffrent durring some tests
This is a myth. Swords were not designed as clubs; that's what a mace is for, otherwise why bother giving a sword an edge? If you had a longsword, an armingsword, etc, then you'd half sword and go for the weak points in the mail if facing armour. Against a gableson you can thrust, and still cut through.

if a sword doesn't flex as much then its more brittle, meaning its more prone to break
True but there is a lot of headroom for having a very strong rigid sword that is very hard to damage, you can get more rigid longswords and less rigid katanas, they are all forged differently
That's exactly why katana's are clay tempered, a harder cutting edge to keep its edge on contact and a softer spine to allow flex and avoid the blade just snapping
...... Okay?
So your saying that a katana made out of adamentium will break?
........

Real Katana's aren't that much better. There's reason why you see paintings of samurai with swords which are chipped and bent.
That all said, a pre-17th century Katana probably would have had a better chance at cutting through a pre-17th century long sword though, on average.😉
you are right
Jesus Christ......this turdeo has been posted again....
this doesn't make any sense because long swords were meant against armor samurai swords are not sharper or bent lesser there the same the only difference is that long swords are double-edged and hade a better point and were not saber-like blades and a better guard than samurai swords the plate armor is not even actual armour and these guys don't know how to use a katana or a long sword there not putting their body weight in stabs or slashes the long sword in the video is not the equal match because it's blunt purposely blunt the only thing about the blunt sword he barely half swords or stab because they know that the stab would penetrate so when they went up against there so-called plater armor the long sword blade flexed purposely they didn't use a normal long sword maybe its a sparing long sword because long swords didn't be like this historically accuratelly.
There is so many things wrong but it's just fun to watch :D

This episode was clearly aimed at making the katana look good. The reality is that they were design for different types of combat. They were both better at different things. They did use a shitty longsword. The longsword was very light and was designed to thrust in weak points or openings in armor while being used as a slashing blade. Katanas were designed for single combat and not good against armor in reality. They are prone to breakage as the steel needed to be hardened unlike european blades.

5:20 so you have ribs in your stomach? you should probably visit the doctor.
Longsword is durable and better. If not an oldman uses it.
If the slice of the longsword was the same where the katana hit. It would be the same
Katana is for the noods and the european sword is for the Warriors

@@brisseden2581 Nah. Cheese.
To me I feel that R. Lee Ermy hesitated using the broad sword.
4:14 is kinda unexplainable, if you don't know what i ment, look closely to the katana blade
I like how he didn’t swing he swords the same, but I Guess the results still will be about the same.
What show is this?
Bruh in the armor test I'm pretty sure you're supposed to bash the armor with the guard or pommel
Doesn't matter, steel may not be able to cut through steel but it sure as hell can cut through tinfoil.
Or, if you want to use the blade, aim for the gaps.
This video made by the HC is really good at giving me a headache.
It’s such a shame how the people in charge bring up actor Lee R. Ermey and give him a script only to make him look like an idiot and get shitted on by commenters who probably don’t even know him
waht show is this from?
