Who Can Worship Kali?

- Many who are attracted to the aspect of the Divine known as Ma Kali, Nataraja, Bhairava or even Gopala will sooner or later come across the narrative that the worship of these aspects is a closed practice that only certain groups of people have access too and that if you attempt it, you might incur harm. What's that about? Is there something to this idea? Over the weekend, I visited Swami Bhajanananda Saraswati at the Kali Mandir in Laguna Beach and I discussed these ideas with revered Swamiji. I pass on to you now some the ideas he so graciously shared with me!
In this short discussion, we make a few remarks distinguishing the Bhakti practice, which is open to one and all even without initiation, vs a Tantrik Sadhana, which requires Diksha, initiation. Also, we say a few things about the commercialisation and commodification of Ma Kali in modern new age circles.

I'm an ex-evangelical from the bible belt and have had intrusive thoughts about Ma Kali for years that I haven't discussed with anyone. Today is the first day I decided to dive in. Thank you for the wealth of information. I feel as though I may be on the right path.

I am black american woman and i have always loved Kali Ma. I cant remember when. I try all different religions and worship styles but i can let go of Kali. She is my only one and I do feel like her daughter. I actually wanted something more "light" and "pretty". I truthfully dont know where to start and I always tried to walk away from her because I did not want to disrespect her nor South Asian traditions. I hope that the path clears. If i have to spend my life in just devotion and respect to her that is enough... I do see that many people still try to use the deities for their personal uses but it should be a love and relationship in my opinion. I am still learning and just listening...

I am an Indian and after hearing your comments i can meke out that this is not ordinary. The one's who feel Kali Maa are special. I would advise you that if possible, once come to India. In the state of West Bengal, there is Kolkata. There's a temple devoted to Kali - Dakshineswar Kali Temple. I assure u, you will be blessed by her.
Try chanting Devi mahatmyam, 1 lesson (don't stop in between a lesson ) per day you can find english online. You can find your life upside down but keep calm and trust her. Use a picture and a ghee lamp for her, if available decorate with flowers in fridays and Tuesday

I’m on the most bizarre spiritual path, raised Catholic, with emphasis on the liberating / charitable side of Jesus, deep reverence for Mary and the Saints… to atheism/agnosticism, to Hellenistic Pantheism, to deep affection for Shaktism, Durga and Kali in particular. Your description of family, regional, national, and personal deities reminds me of the Catholic concept of Patron Saints.
I went a very similar path to yours, it's curious that you traversed Hellenistic pantheism, in my case I have theological beliefs inspired by Kabbalistic, Shaivistic and Neoplatonic panentheism, yet I feel very inclined to a "pagan" praxis (Dionysus), or bhakti (Shiva, and Kali in particular). It's nice to see a similar pattern!

Ma Kali is the one and only in my heart. I feel an immense mothering from her. When my childhood traumas in this life surface throughout my adulthood, she is there to allow release / crying and she makes me feel safe while doing this. I was raised to not cry or show much emotion, so I internalize it all. Ma Kali has done for me what many therapist's could not. It is not all releasing of pain either. I feel an immense love from her when I am happy and pure love is everything. When I view her as the begining of it all. I feel almost a humming of the body and I am put at peace within myself and almost like I am one with her and everything. Thank you so much for this video, subscribed.

I lost my Mom 22 years back. That deep pain cannot be removed by any human company. I took kriya deeksha in Hariharananda ji tradition. Nothing worked. I now only cry to Divine Mother during loneliness. I feel her internally and relax now!

I tried to avoid Kali for many years, focusing on Shiva or Ganapati, until she wouldn't disappear and I was forced to sit up and take notice. That's a long story though. When she came into my life I was immediately introduced to someone who taught me sadhana from Kamakhya but it was years before I got diksha and then it was from the Sri Vidya Kula before I got it in the Kali kula and am now, 6 years later, finally learning pooja from the Kamakhya temple lineage. Quite a powerful and intense choice to consciously be a Kali Upasaka but at the same time, it's not really our choice...lol
I used to avoid her and focused on Durga instead

I just remembered something. When I was 12 I bought a poster of Kali and hung it on my wall. I forgot about that.
Maa Kali passed a message for me in lightworking cards. Came up at the beginning and at the end.

I think the kind of temper I have,kaali ma is the only one who matches my frequency perfectly .Before her I never prayed to any specific god because I didn’t feel any connection with the gentle forms of deities.
She understands my aggression and my pain.She came to me when I was so angry at everything that I felt my body cells are going to burst into flames because of hurt betrayal and anger.She held my hand and I cried my heart out to her.At that moment I knew she is my deity.I like the fierce form of deities.
I pray to Kaali and Kaal Bhairav.They both are strong and fierce.It’s like praying to a power couple.
I didn't even know about Kali but had this woman with the tongue sticking out and crazy looking, blue skin came to me. I love her because she came to me when I was very sick. I don't ask her for stuff, I just like her presense. She feel so holy!

Thank you for making this video.When it first came across my feed, I quickly scrolled past. I was scared that it was going to say that if you're not part of the culture, then it's cultural appropriation, or whatever reason that I wasn't allowed to pursue a deeper relationship with her. Ma Kali has been inspiring and comforting to me and when I turned away because I was worried about being respectful, she came and found me. I am learning how to do spirituality without the dogmatic religeon of my childhood and I am so grateful for your enthusiastic encouragement to (baring unsupervised tantra practices) worship/love Kali in whatever way you are called to or feels right. I think it's kind of a sad reflection on the religion I came from that I keep looking for gatekeepers to tell me I"m not allowed. Anyway, thank you again!
My child asked to see a tarot card of kali where she is riding on a horse, then pulled out the sun card. She then said we were her daughters. So, renewing my devotion :)

I love ShivJi and Ganapathī. But Kalī stole my heart the most. She's so protective, and loving. Also, thank you for talking about why it is not a good idea to do any sort of worship of an aspect of God without diksha. When I started practicing Sanatana Dharma in 2021, I made the stupid mistake of worshipping Kalī pretty intensely for three evenings. On the 3rd evening, I like I was struck by lightning. And I literally went mad. Other things transpired, and the only reason I didn't end up in a psychiatric hospital or worse was because of Divine Mother's Grace. Thank you ji, for an informative video. Bhakti is worship, the point of the video is that performing puja or yajna without diksha is inadvisable, but that bhakti can be done by anybody
yes, she chose me Kali, she came while i was sick and gently cover me with a white cloth, she comes and hides me with a white cloth and i can see her laying in me to hide me from some demon i can see tru the cloth....i have dedicated to knowing of her and have adapted worship to her.
I came drawn to ma kali from a Sikh prayer "chandi di vaar" and never knew chandi was kali until I saw this video. Now it makes sense how I ended up visiting a kali mandir last year and became drawn to her. I did it with no intention but she has protected me with fierce devotion 🙏🏼 ❤
Chandi is Kali but Chandi is not Kali. Like you and I are one, but you and I are two. Kali and Chandi are divine, so they are more aware that they are one. But there are no two words that are exact synonims.

I have been in love with Mother Kali for over fifty decades. She has been there for me as an intimate for almost all of that time. If you reach out to her with true devotion and yearning like that of a desperate lover, she will come to you and change you. No one, no group owns Divinity! What gibbering nonsense! When she does come, she will change your life like a whirlwind so, you had better be ready for that force to enter into your life. Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa taught us that loving divinity does not mean that you must adopt ritual behaviors, study Sanskrit or even attend pujas. Learn a basic worship style and make a murti for Kali in your heart and keep her in your thoughts. Let the fools debate their dogmas and who is entitled to worship her. If you are sincere, loving and persistent, she will come.

Before I was feeling attraction to Ananda Mai Ma and later I found that I was feeling Kali from her. For me they are the same. I feel deep relaxiation and also fear when I see Kali in the pictures. I feel deep energy aweking in me and I just love to surrender. Yesterday I was looking at how I can worship to Kali and There was a text saying you can just say Om Kali Om Kali as a mantra. I’m from the United States in ever since I started watching the national of the TV series all the forms of God is Shakti her started to cry and ever since then I’ve just been in love with each form of mother or tear up for no apparent reason or I get super emotional
Very helpful insight, esp as one who is not from India or raised in hinduism. I became heavily involved with ISKCON last year and deeply connected with Bhakti and fell in love with the stories and texts of hindism - but ultimately fell away from their limited way of doing things. Still trying to integrate everything I learned in a more holistic way after leaving and this video is really helping with that. Thank you!
limited way of doing things like? hinduism has various sects. The shortcut and serious one to reach enlightenment is tantric way or worshipping shakti, but need to be done under a true guru else things can go wrong

I'm Bengali at birth and my house was heavily matriachal with a huge photo of Kali and Ramakrishna hahah..now i live in London, practciing Tantra and Shaivism for 2 years and i am obviously drawn to both...but have been connecting and receiving Shivas Grace much more lately and a part of me almost felt oh no Kali come on you gotta catch up i cant betray my childhood haha..and quickly caught my thoughts and reassured myself saying its all Divine, and maybe at this time i am more in need of the Awareness and Consciousness rather than Energy

Kali has repeatedly come into my life over and over again. I am American Sri Lankan Tamil Hindu. I feel strange as her worship is not popular in my family or in my village in Sri Lanka. My mother died when I was very young, so I feel very connected to Maa Kali. The commodification of her image is something I am very uncomfortable with, as I feel Americans romanticize or do not fully understand her true force and treat her as an “energy” instead of a Goddess. I have seen signs to worship her actively, and this video has been very helpful. Thank you, Nish.
Ma Kali has come to me. She helped me release a deep pain that was attached to me. She told me how to heal, repair and accept the purest love to live in the space that was just cleared open. My body was in motion I was not moving this energy, Ma Kali moved the energy within.

I came across your video because I have been invited to shaktipat in worship of ma Kali. I’ve attended daily meditations every morning and night for about a month and I could feel the energy moving through my body. My body moved and danced spontaneously and I also cried a few times. Now, I then had a disagreement with the person who held the shaktipat and he ignored me ever since. Now I still feel my body moving every time I sit to meditate. I believe it is Kali. But I don’t know how to continue, if I should continue etc. could you offer any insight? Im kinda confused 😅

I have just started. I was initiated by my gurudev with the mantra of Shri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa. I am deeply attracted to Maa Kali. I do my Japa as instructed. I am facing a lot of troubles in my life, in my career, and health prospects. I feel Maa is taking a very difficult examination of mine, I listen to Dakshina Kali's stotro every day. But there is no one to help me in the tantra journey of Maa Kali. My guru told me to read scriptures, but Sanskrit again is an issue. I don't know, I am lost. All I do is my Japa seriously, I bow down at Kali temples, I feel I am very early at my spiritual journey which can take many lifetimes.

I've never studied about Indian gods. I'm here today because while I was in meditation I saw myself in the form of what I learned was kali. It's interesting what I've learn about her so far. Kali seems in general to represent a big part of the religion I practice.
