Politeness is so important. When our daughter started daycare at age 2 and a half the adults came to me after a week and told me that all the other kids had started saying "thank you" and "please" after my daughter started. That made a mamma proud.

I still hear that about my daughter, and when they talk about how caring and positive she is it just warms my soul... but my son is a different story. Night and day over here, and the only thing they take turns with at home is mood swings. They can both be the sweetest, most polite little people, but the teachers think my girl is an angel and my boy is Dennis the Menace. Not sure what to do at this point, but I love the teamwork idea.

I remember in kindergarten my teacher was passing out papers once and I said "thank you." When each tiny 5 year old had a paper, my teacher called me over to her desk, praised me for saying "thank you" without being asked, and gave me a prize from the treasure chest. I saw that good behavior was rewarded and now being in 10th grade, it's second nature to say "thank you" when papers are passed out in class. The reward didn't cause me to expect it every time but rather proved to me that people are always paying attention and how to stand out in a good way.

I think being kind is a lot more important then being polite in life, because I think that being too polite can come off as less relaxed and somewhat rigid sometimes. I think it’s good for kids to learn manners, however, it may be a little odd at school especially when they’re in middle or high school, if they act very polite and formal, it’s less natural feeling

On interruptions, I taught my daughter (currently 4 years old) to come hold my pinkie finger when she needs to talk to me and I'm preoccupied with another adult, even just talking with my husband. I squeeze her finger back and she knows I know, and I keep holding onto her pinkie. Whoever I'm talking to can usually tell she needs something, and a natural lull tends to happen pretty quickly so I'm able to address her. We've been doing this for about a year and she really does great with it!

I have a problem with teaching kids they should introduce themselves with a handshake. A) because kids are dirty and germ-y, and you don't know when the other person/ child washed their hands of coughed in them.
But more importantly B) kids (and adults) with learning or behavioural difficulties are often uncomfortable with contact, so teaching kids it's 'impolite' to not shake hands stigmatises and isolates kids who don't like to touch.
    C) It's also teaching kids that they have to make contact or interact with strangers. It's like when parents to force their kids to 'go give X a big hug and kiss'. If a kid is uncomfortable doing that, you're forcing them to interact with people they don't know in a way they're not comfortable with. It might be hard to believe but kids are people too, with their own individual boundaries.
A Better idea would be to teach kids to wave and say something polite, rather than force them to shake hands.

I’m a kid with allergies. A handshake is always the best option for me. Some kids eat things I’m allergic to and don’t wash their hands, and I have serious allergies. Meaning I can die from smelling them. So just remember that some kids won’t want a handshake and it’s not them being rude, it’s them being safe,

One thing with the interrupting is Presley was sort of correct. When I learned I was told that I can put my hand on my Mom's (or whoever I'm trying to get attention from's) shoulder, this way they will know that you want to talk to them but you aren't interrupting.
Also for whoever is receiving the hand on their shoulder can place your hand over their hand so that they know that you heard that they want your attention.
I am sorry if that was a confusing explanation. But thank you for your time
