Not sure how often that has happened to me but might aswell share a little story. Once i came from gym and for some unknown reason my shelf had collapsed over my expensive quitar and all that was in there was all over the place and created huge mess. My first reaction was to laugh..- '' Like really, this shit happened '' Then i sat down opened couple cans of beer before cleaning up anything and looking damage on my guitar.

Any history teacher should know that the holy roman empire in the 1500s is no true empire at all and just refers to a loose confederation of autonomous states ruled by dukes and princes rather than the man who called himself emperor.

I remember I had a girl in my class that was spacial needs. We were watching WW2 movies, and she would always laugh. Everyone in class was scared of her because they thought she was crazy. But I notice that she always looked away, so I figured she was nervous laughing. I was the only one that sat next to her because I couldn't see the board because of my bad eyesight. I also noticed that she was always getting lost, so I started walking her to class. I was always getting to mine late because of it. But my teachers didn't care, because they could confirm that I was just taking her to class. Eventually the school found out she needed to be in the spacial needs class that has the teacher walk with the kids everywhere. They only figured that out because one of my teachers kept telling them. I was also special needs, but I wasn't as special. I could navigate to school and take a regular bus. People couldn't even tell I was spacial needs. I was the only one that talked to her, and the only one that stud up for her. Everyone eventually left her alone when I told them what was happening. And that is when another kid told the teacher about her. I saw her once after she moved classes and she was really happy.

Yes, Mr. Terry. You are correct on the fact that laughing is a self defense mechanism when overstressed.
It's why it's hard to shake the giggles once they kick in at important events like weddings, funerals, exams. It doesn't even have to be overly stressful, as anyone who can't stop giggling in church or in school will tell you.

1 - Good observation, Hysteria and Hypnosis are the same effect triggered by different reasons, you could say that hypnosis is controled hysteria or that hysteria is the natural hypnosis.
2 - If you start playing along in the midst of a Mass Hysteria outbreak you are almost certain to start having the real thing very soon.
3- if you dance night and day until passing out, with your feet bleeding, odds are, you're not faking it.
With hypnotism, at least, and I highly suspect mass hysteria, you have to believe (at least on a subconscious level) in whatever suggestion is being given to you. It is dangerous to an extent, as it can influence your mind, but it has also been equally helpful in certain situations.
The crazy situations you might see people do under the influence of hypnosis are the result of pretty much all external behavioral influences being removed. Like how alcohol removing your inhibitions, but to a greater extent, and (often) with suggestions being proposed to the brain.
Mass hysteria probably starts with a lack of care. This could be as simple as "that kinda looks like fun," "I desperately need *something* to take my mind off things," or even "I just don't care anymore." I suspect the initial hysteric person has a lot more going on than that, but the people joining in probably don't suddenly have the same hysteria. They are just relaxed enough, or depressed enough, that they are in a particularly suggestible state.
At first, the example with the sun seems to indicate that this isn't the case, since some skeptics also saw the effects, but keep in mind that exhaustion from the sun is a factor, as well as the part where, you know, they showed up to see what would happen, *just in case.* Some part of their consciousness believed it could be possible.
I also find it interesting in that sun example, that there were a few people regardless that didn't see anything, and were completely unaffected, despite a huge majority of the crowd seeing all the stuff. There is no solid evidence of course, but that makes me suspect the same effect as hypnotism is indeed the culprit for this mass hysteria. Among the community of people who practice hypnotism for either fun or personal improvement, it is recognized that there is a small subset of people on which hypnotism just *doesn't work* very well. (Of which I am one of.)
From my informal study on the subject, I have come to believe that meditation, and its positive effect on people changing their own life, uses the same general concept of hypnotism, but to a lesser extent. You bring yourself close to a hypnotic trance state, with just enough of your conscious mind aware enough to pass suggestions directly to your subconscious mind.
Anyway, regardless of possible connections to mass hysteria, I would never endorse someone undergoing hypnotism, except for medical purposes, or if the person performing it is someone you trust with your life. Even though you cannot be hypnotized to do something in opposition to your subconscious mind, always remember that the subconscious is *all* of you, not just the parts of you that you like or show to other people. Meditation (self-hypnosis, whether purely beneficial, or purely for fun mind tricks) is a lot safer.
For #2, placebo effect?
Of course it's placebo, but when placebo happens with *mental* issues, it's still just as "real." What we normally label as placebo is a mental state that recreates physical symptoms (or even fixes physical problems, which makes things interesting), but when the problem is mental to begin with, who is to say it isn't "real" now? Sure, it's not the same issue as the originator of the mass hysteria in the cases when it's gradual (like the dancing, the meowing, etc.), but its effects are the same.
@@allenholloway5109 one possibility as to what was seen by the people watching the sky may have been simply that depending on temperature, and amount of time they were looking up, and wether they were actually looking at the sun, could explain several claims of what different people saw.

I've seen it plenty of times at work. The most amazing example I can think of is when one of my coworkers got tipped over while up on a 20 ft extension ladder. He somehow only managed to get a few scratches and a twisted ankle and when I was doing a basic first aid assessment, all he could do was laugh hysterically because he could've easily died or been seriously injured. After that, our boss has made it a rule that when someone is going high on an extension ladder, someone is required to be at the bottom to keep it steady.

Stress can cause a laughing or crying reaction which then activates the parasympathetic nervous system to make you feel more relaxed/comfortable. That's why that nap after crying or the little recovery after a laughing fit feels so good physically. There are plenty of other activities that induces the same reaction to varying degrees 😊
Yea, I wanna say that stress induced laughter is something along the lines of why thrill seekers like doing dangerous things. Something jargony along the lines of the brain saying "oh, your stressed? Here, have some dopamine to chill you out", but it goes way beyond that and people start uncontrollably laughing. I'm not a doctor, that's literally just a wild guess.

Oh yeah stressed induced laughter is indeed a real thing. A couple months ago I went to visit my family after the death of my grandmother.
Trying to cope due to how she died, then trying to fulfill her final wishes, handling her will... it was a stressful and emotional situation. Then one day, when coming back after visiting the cemetery, I tripped and skinned my leg pretty badly. Something in my mind just snapped and my first instinct was to laugh. I had no idea why but I couldn’t stop. I laughed non stop for about 5 minutes before it tapered off into crying.
I feel like if people were literally dying from exhaustion around you, you probably wouldn’t just play along with the dancing lol

I've watched a video where a guy collapsed on stage while a large show was going on. The rest of the players just kinda laughed it off and kept playing for a good few minutes before they started getting worried when he didn't get up.
Re: plague dr. mask. As far as combating the plague itself, the mask was quite useful, but accidentally. Turns out plague is bacterial, and all but requires fluid transfer, with airborne live times that can be measured in single digit minutes. Gloves, masks, and eye protection did most of the heavy lifting of keeping doctors exposure minimized at a demonstrably higher survival rate than their patients. Alcohol based perfumes and camphors/spices/oils and so on in the mask may have helped as well. It's basically the birth of medical sanitization.

The dancing thing isn't that weird considering there is also a part of Italy where they thought you could dance enough that you sweat out toxins from a wolf spider bite. They would dance for days on end and make a whole party of it. Little did they know, the bite just wasn't that bad.

In the game crusader kings 2 with the reapers due dlc (which adds an in-depth plague system) there is actually a dancing plague in the game, it is scripted like a regular illness and it can infect your character, which leads to hilarious event chains.

Thr nuns stopped meowing after the guards threatened them, also In Germany in the 15th century, another nunnery was subject to mass hysteria event as well in the form of biting each other. People would say they had some weird illness and it turns out it did kind of spread around nuneries all around Germany, some in Holland and Rome as well, the eventually quit out of exhaustion.

With hypnotism everyone is "playing along" that's how it works and why you can't actually use it on anyone to make them do something they don't want to do. At the same time it's not "faking"

I have a lower degreee in psych (a BA) but I can tell you the power of immediate others is very strong. It was very likely few if any were faking it. Ticket sales for concerts and sporting events rely on the same phenomina to get people to pay absurd abounts for what they can see and hear at home. What you are paying for is the energy from the crowd making you excited. As soon as a few people start woohing at the band or cheering at the game it spreads and nearly everyone in the crowd gets sucked in. Also see the Bystander effect for how it can work the opposite way where if one person sees a terrible accident they will likely jump in to help but if 12 people do they all stand around and do nothing looking to each other to see what to do. These are all the same thing.

I thought that the reason for the plague doctors' masks shape is not only because of the crow and bad omen surrounding it but also because the smell of rotting flesh was really hard to bear. they also didn't know that it was transferred by flees so they thought it was airborne. they even complained about being really hot under all the clothes because they didn't realise that that was what was keeping the flees off.

On the topic of plague doctor masks, I believe that the flowers that they shoved into the "beak" portion were used more to help combat the smells from their patients who didn't bath and there is shit everywhere. I know that certain plants were thought to help against plague and some flower (can't remember off the top of my head, quick guess is lilac) skyrocketed in price due to supply versus demand. I think at least 60% was to deal with smell, just like how in the E.R. they have peppermint oil for emergency situations, i.e. Swamps of Dagabah (look up and read).
It might be a bit of both, related to the idea of the thieves herb blend that supposedly protected against it
