Fun fact, in my 7th grade science class we were watching a documentary on the challenger explosion. In the seconds after a recording of a newscaster played saying "Ladies and gentleman, the challenger has exploded." , We heard cheers, woos, and clapping from the field outside of the classroom window. Worst. Timing. Ever.

In case you didn't know, Christa McAuliffe was a history teacher, too, Mr. Terry. She was a civilian astronaut, a trained member of the crew (a payload specialist), but was not part of NASA's astronaut corps, which were full-time NASA employees who would rotate missions and do other agency work on Earth when not flying. McAuliffe was hired as part of the Teachers In Space Program, which intended to have her broadcast lessons from spaces and stuff like that. I remember watching her interviews before the launch. Even here in Canada, her going up was a big deal in schools. The disaster happened on my older brother's birthday, which was crazy. I'll never forget it.
Geez that sucks, I would’ve loved to see something from space that was educational.
My middle school was named after her!
That was my birthday day too… I was three though so I didn’t exactly remember it

Let me guess. The Habsburg empire is high up there.
Yes! He should watch them while pausing the video and answer what he thinks is wrong with the maps.
@@MrDynamite110 I live pretty close to a strange border myself. Might be there as well. Baarle Nassau/Hertog. It has over half of all the worlds enclaves in one small city. The border goes straight through houses and bars. I was dropped there once at night. Crossed the border about 20 times before I found my way to camp.

When he mourned the first Albert i thought "He's gonna have a nasty surprise"
The thing about the Space Race is that the Soviets and Americans were basically neck and neck, with the US being mere months behind the USSR until the moon landing, where the Soviets never even got close. Alan Shepard went into space less than a month after Yuri Gagarin did. Sputnik went into orbit in October of 1957, and Explorer 1 was sent up in January of 1958. It was a pretty close race until the US landed on the moon.

The best part of the entire space race is the Americans just got self-conscious of everything Russia was doing, so they got a guy on the moon and said "we're having a space race and look we won because we say the end goal is what we just did"
The Soviets also never even got close to landing on the moon while the US was pretty close behind the Soviets throughout the rest of the Space Race. The first satellite for each nation was within four months of each other, while the first person in space from each nation was within a single month of each other.
@@IndianaJoneFan24 the Soviets were just using their cool new tech, not their fault the US wants to compare dick sizes to everyone for no reason
Not really, Mr Terry glosses over many early American achievements like first geostationary satellite, first telecommunications satellite, first space walk, first orbital rendezvous and docking, first space station and many many more.
@@classonbread5757America very much did NOT conduct the first space walk, first orbital rendezvous/docking, or first space station, the latter two would be done by the two operations at the Soviet salyut station. The first space walk was conducted on the Voskhod 2 mission.
@@aaaaa___ I meant the first untethered space walk my bad.
The Challenger was like the biggest mess up tbh. They knew some things were malfunctioned and still launched anyways. There is a video on it if you type in Challenger explosion New York Times
I actually work in the polymer industry as a chemist and my boss worked on parts of the Challenger. The glass transition temp of the o-rings was well known by the engineers and chemists that worked on them, but the higher ups didn’t want to delay the launch any longer (and assumed the back-up o-rings would help, but they were made of the same material so the transition temp was the same) and proceeded with the launch anyway. Effectively dooming everyone on board.
I am typically not a fan of reaction videos but Terry actually adds to the original so I actually enjoy his videos.
On god, but theres another reactor of sam that talks about nuclear topics and also adds to his videos its super interesting.
Forgot his name but hes cool

May I recommend Plant disease by Sam O'Neal.
A series by extra history I just saw was about the Irish Potato Famine, and it was mind blowing, the depths of suffering, the lack of care from the British government, and the level of care from the international community once they found out. I'm not sure if you'd want to do the potato famine, but I would definitely suggest it.
Everyone forgets the Space Shuttle Columbia tragedy and that makes me sad. It was more recent than the Challenger but no one ever mentions it.
I havnt nor the Challenger disaster.
It’s probably because everyonenpounts out the challenger had a teacher on it, so hat just over shadows the Columbia because we can’t milk it for as many sad points.
@@cryamistellimek9184 Maybe, but the Columbia had 2 female astronauts on board, one of whom was the first Indian woman in space I believe, Kalpana Chawla. Since I've posted I've thought about it more. Part of it is probably because the Challenger disaster happened when showing shuttle launches in classrooms was still fairly common. With the teacher, Christa McAuliffe, on board it was televised to even more classrooms. The Columbia on the other hand didn't explode until reentry, and it happened on a Saturday. There was also concern there would be an issue on reentry that made the resulting disaster less of a shock. Unless you were from an area connected to the crew, most people probably went about their normal Saturday and heard about it on the news later.

Keep being the cool teacher, those are the best teachers
I was home sick from school that day and watched the Challenger Disaster live 😔
my mom was eleven years old when the challenger disaster happened. she was in math class during the scheduled launch time, and they wheeled in a TV so everyone could see it take off. she had been so excited to see a teacher go to space because she wanted to be one as well…she told me that, the moment the shuttle exploded, the teacher looked absolutely horrified and turned the TV off as fast as humanly possible. she cried her soul out for the rest of the day.
Nasa: "There's nothing routine about going into sapace."
Elon Musk: "Hold my falcon"
A series you might like is history on trial were they take historical figures and discuss all the good and bad he or she did, made by TED-Ed
You should rewatch the history of the entire world, I guess again and go into more detail because you wanted to talk about so much. I would be happy with a longer video super in depth.
Had to pause the video to check something out. I was told (and may have misheard) the first thing launched into space was sputnik, so the new information about fruit flies being launched confused me. Wikipedia States that they shot the flies up, but it seems to indicate that they almost went right back down. Sputnik hung out up there for a few weeks. Yay! I learned beyond learning!

Also, according to Know Your Meme: Ligma is a fictional disease associated with a death hoax orchestrated by Instagramuser ninja_hater that claimed Fortnitestreamer Ninja had passed away after contracting the disease. Basically everything results in instant death
When no new Sam i come here, but man I love the blooper real of history
Without a doubt my favourite Sam O'Nella video
Its on the (very) long side, but Emplemon has an amazing video on Stanislav Petrov, the most powerful man in history. Perhaps you'd like it.
The name is "There may Never Ever be a more powerful man as Stanislav Petrov"
The funny thing is, all the complications amd schedule differences that would've come from accommodating Big Bird probably would have prevented the Challenger from explosing in the first place.
I wonder if anyone heard of the Lost Austronut theory, is it believed that during the space race there were Lost cosmonaut
I was not quite 3 when i saw the Challenger explode live on tv. I didn't understand what was happening, but it freaked me out in time.
I wish i had this guy as my history teacher
11:42 the challenger is like a modern day Hindenburg
When a teacher quotes “Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you'll land among the stars.” Don't believe them because a teacher named Mrs. Mcauliffe tried going to the moon but the ship blew up. She didn't reach the moon or any of the stars including the closest star too earth which is the sun!
RIP Columbia.

A good series to react too is "why we fight", its a bit on the long side though.
they were scared or Radiation from space but not even 50 Years before that, they had radioactive toothpaste, chocolate, water and all that stuff....
Christa McAulife? I don’t remember how to spell her last name. But she was a teacher in Queens, NY. They named PS149 after her. RIP
1:52 i think thats his dog drinking in the backround
I belive another concern was that the first man in space would not be able to swallow.
Still highly recommend the banana republics video. Very entertaining and informational

The Challenger disaster was a result of bureaucratic ignorance and not listening to the specialists. All they had to do was wait for warmer weather so that the fucking O rings would work properly but they were on a schedule so they got someone higher up the chain to sign off on it. Ridiculous.
