    I love how you show how compressed some of these tracks are. I'm always afraid of over compressing due to the advice of so many people online. I understand that dynamics are important but it seems despite a lot of the advice a lot of the pros are really heavy on compressing. Guess there is a fine line between over compression and just right.

      Tape gives natural compression and these were all recorded to tape, then interfaced. You gotta remember the old guys (Bruce Swedien) who said "compression is for kids" were recording to tape and playing back from tape.

    I saw Brendan O’Brien and knew I’d be listening to some immaculately produced roomy drum sounds. Just such an amazing balance of ambience and punch/definition. He had broad stylistic chops for the genre too. Listen to STP’s “Purple” (really slick, wide, sounds expensive) and then listen to “Tiny Music” (low-fi, vintage, boxy sounds and roomy sounds). They are so different and both amazing sounding records. His production was the sound of my youth. Most of my favorite teenage records (the first CD I bought) were his records. Amazing musicians too, just a special time

    Mr. Beato - this was again a brilliant dissection of the the work of this giant. Brendan is one of my personal favorite top producers and audio engineers - several years ago "Black The Sky" from "Dogman" was my "go to" referent track for rock productions ...and the whole album...drums, bass, guitars...vocals - everything there is killing me every time. The idea with the Y cable for the toms was a killer one - I will definitely try to find information how to make myself several of these and use them on my next production...Regards!

    King's X!!!!! Hell yeah! Brendan O'Brien produced "Dogman" (one of my favorite albums). I still prefer their earlier stuff though because their earlier albums had these huge epic masterpieces of rock like "Pleiades", "Out of the Silent Planet", "In the New Age" & "Faith Hope Love". I'd love to see you do a King's X video even though they're not one of the most well known rock bands, I feel they're very underrated and I'm still confused about why they're not bigger than Metallica. According to Jeff Ament of Pearl Jam - King's X invented grunge. I'm not even sure what he meant by that because I've never seen them as a grunge band.

      @nfsmwh3r411 Před 4 lety +5

      @@chrisdover8507 I know it's a bit late, but I hope I can still help you, mate. It's different snares. Snares are easy to tune in relation to other drums. Really crank up the resonant head till it's tight af and then adjust the batter head for a good sound and rebound. It should also be fairly tight for this sound.
      This awesome snare sound comes from both piccolo snares and normal sized snares. But they should be deep.
      I recommend something like a 12 × 7 or 12 × 8 if you only want to play music like this or just use a 14 × 7 or 14 × 8 for a greater variety of possible sounds. I play a rock-solid Sonor 14 × 8 snare and it sounds pretty much like the snares in this video. The important thing is really that the drum is not shallow. Both wood and metal snare drums sound awesome.

    Love this video!! Hope you keep doing these "Techniques Explained" vids. I also love your "What Makes This Song Great . . . " series. And your life story vids that tell about the hard work it took to get where you are today. I also like that you are honest about (and extensively explain in your other vids) "compression" because the producers themselves won't admit to it in their interviews and vids!!!!!!
    Actually, everything of yours that I've watched on CZcams is great and I hope you keep making all kinds of vids because you are so good at them! People don't know how hard it is to teach (especially in today's world of shorter attention spans) and you have much talent. If I had kids, I'd watch more of your instructions videos - I also told my sister about your vids because my nephews are just getting to the age where they are learning to sing and they love your videos with Dylan. Don't ever lose your passion!

    Most talented man in music. He can play any instrument by ear. I don’t think people know this about brendan. My cousin is very talented. He deserves more credit than he gets. Awesome and sooooo talented.

    I only recently came across your channel and I've been pouring through SO many of your videos, they are immensely helpful and informative. I'm not sure if you take requests related to these types of videos, but if you were to do a video with production tips like this for either Butch Vig or Nigel Godrich it'd make my year! Regardless, thanks so much for these videos, I'm loving them!

    I'm enjoying the fact that you've got a G5 still running in the background there. Mine's still going strong as well.

    You absolutely rock for doing this!
    Where does one acquire those multitrack sessions? Especially the one for Stp!
    Thank you for your hard work on this!

      If I had to guess, they're archival copies - there are no plugins inserted anywhere. And, he probably has contacts in those kinds of echelons.
