Harald I Fairhair (850 - 932ce) is portrayed by the Icelandic sagas as the first King of Norway. According to traditions current in Norway and Iceland in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, he reigned from c. 872 to 930. Supposedly, two of his sons, Eric Bloodaxe and Haakon the Good, succeeded Harald, respectively, to become kings after his death.
Much of Harald's biography remains uncertain, since the extant accounts of his life in the sagas were set down in writing around three centuries after his lifetime. Indeed, although it is possible to write a detailed account of Harald as a character in medieval Icelandic sagas, it is even possible to argue that there was no such historical figure at all. His life is described in several of the Kings' sagas, none of them older than the twelfth century. Their accounts of Harald and his life differ on many points, but it is clear that in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries Harald was regarded as having unified Norway into one kingdom.
Since the nineteenth century, when Norway was in a personal union with Sweden, Harald has become a national icon of Norway and a symbol of independence. Though the king's sagas and medieval accounts have been critically scrutinised during the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, Harald maintains a reputation as the father of the Norwegian nation.

Harald didn't recieve the nickname Hårfagre (Fairhair) until after he had conquered Norway and cut his hair, because after he cut it, it became so fine and fair.
During the years when he was enganging in war for the conquest of Norway, he had the nickname "tanglehair" because his hair got tangled since he did not wash nor brush it.

Harald Fairhair is descended from Sigurd Snake in the Eye through his mother. It was after the Battle of Hafrsfjord that he 'united' Norway. The subsequent gathering where this was 'solidified' was south of Hafrsfjord, on my ancestral farmland (around what is now known as Varhaug). Following the lineages (which I'm still fleshing out), he is my 32 times Great Grandfather (this makes Snake in the Eye my 36times GF). The farmland where this occured is still in my family, though the building where it all happened is long gone. There are still two roads that bear the farmname which became my family name. While he may have been born on the sweden side of norway, he died in Rogaland, where the original seat of ruling was located before it was flipped over to Oslo.
I enjoyed vikings as fluff, but it annoys me when they really mess with who was who's relative.. Halfdan before brother not father?? and alive at the same time as his Gr. Gr. Grandfather, Sigurd, who them depict as murdered by Ivar!? umm.. no, Sigurd married Blaeja, daughter of King Aella and goes on to rule in Denmark.
They also take some liberties in the followup.. as there is no way that Harald and Leif Eriksson were have been near same age contemporaries!!

My family immigrated from Ramnes Norway(today part of Tonsberg) to Bosque county Texas in 1842 a couple of months after Texas became a State. Bosque County is called little Norway today. A member of the 48 to Texas traveled to Norway about 50 years ago and located histories of those whom remained in Norway. He collaborated with Norweigian of his kin and wrote a book. It was written in Norwegian and I have not seen it but have written many short books about the Texas Norwegians. My father was born in 1924 in Texas but raised by Norweigian speaking aunts. My Grandfather was born in Texas 1897 and could speak some Norweigian. He told stories of why the family left Norway. He said that though Norway became independent the best land continued to remain in the family's that conspired with the Danish monarchy and land in Texas was plentiful and cheap. I am in my 70 s but my son plans to visit in the Tonsberg area in a few years.

I guess your favourite king must be Håkon (the good) "den gode" Haraldsson. My favourite king is maybe a pre Viking king called Olof Trätälja (woodwittler). He was the son of Ingjald Illråde , and was part of the famous Ynglinga House. When the family was thrown out of Uppsala, Olof settled in Värmland. In Värmland we have three buriel mounds named after him.
They are located in Säffle, Nysäter and Högsäter. One of his sons Halfdan Hvitbein (Whiteshanks) became a king in Norway. He is an ancestor to famous Harald Fairhair.

It's interesting that you mentioned Olaf Tratalja. I was just reading about him a little while ago. Many sources call him Olaf "Tree-feller" because he cleared the forest in Varmland, but Egil's Saga calls him Olaf "Wood-carver." That's actually a pretty big difference...felling trees as opposed to carving wood. Which do you think is more accurate?

A similar thing happened with the move ‘Brave Heart’. That is so far from what really happened it’s a crime, however if you ignore the facts as a piece of entertainment it was successful. I was living in Sydney at the time and had several dust ups with Scottish decent Ozzies who wanted to fight me after seeing the movie 🤪. Going “Viking” as I understand is the term used for what some Nordic explorers did similar to “going shopping”and I’ve learned they also discovered a huge part of the world. Good video, man (as usual). I do have one complaint, though...I'm a little disappointed that you didn't mention Harald's uncle Guthorm, who was supposedly the son of Sigurd Hart. According to many sources, it was Guthorm who was leading the armies and winning battles (at least, during the early years of Harald's reign). Obviously, we don't really know how accurate those stories are. Were Guthorm and Harald really descendants of Ragnar Lothbrok? Who the hell knows?! But I still think Guthorm is worth a mention.
As for your favorite king of the Viking Age...I really don't know. I thought you had said that Svein Forkbeard was one of your favorite "heroes" from that period. So...

I am not an historian. But if Harald had his 'kongsgard' at Avaldsnes and the main battle took place at Hafrsfjord, both places close to Stavanger, it seems that his centre of power was in Rogaland/Ryfylke/Boknafjord. Perhaps his power base extended from Aust-Agder up to Møre...I don't know. But it is likely that Viken and Vestfold was ruled by Danish kings while Harald ruled more on the South and West coast. But again...I am not the expert.

Erling "Skakke" Ormsson is an interesting character that was the main loyalist of Harald Fairhairs continued interests,- and was the father of Magnus V (Erlingsson).
He was also the de-facto Ruler of Norway on behalf of his son throughout his childhood and arguably (for 18 years) until his death in 1179 (Kalvskinnet).
Erling also got his king-son with the daughter of infamous Sigurd the Crusader.
Unfortunately,- he was the main loser vs the Birkebeiner uprising and was the first wave of losing opponents, leading the rich "Islandbeards" of the north-sea areas against the poorer local norwegians loyal to Sverre Sigurdsson.
The "Bagler" party also lost to the Birkebeiners 2 years later, and was supporters of Magnus V as the successor-line to the throne as a pro-vatican lobby group.
Interestingly, Erling Skakkes home-area of Etne was one of the last areas of Norway to get christianized and thus would make him the perfect candidate as protagonist of a TV-series or movie regarding the christianization/Catholicisation/de-paganisation of Norway.

I'm over 90% Norwegian. Most Norwegian ancestors are from the Rogaland region. My late aunt visited relatives there and supposedly found out we had a king in our bloodline. Anyway, wasn't Fairhair from the Rogaland region? ✌️

    Harald Hardrada ?
Harald Sigurdsson, also known as Harald of Norway and given the epithet Hardrada in the sagas, was King of Norway from 1046 to 1066. In addition, he unsuccessfully claimed both the Danish throne until 1064 and the English throne in 1066.

close to 900 AC and the history is based on sagas, I can think of the Mycenaean Greek civilization similar to Vikings (sea power, militarism, raids) in the 1400 BC with the linear B writing, some sagas (Iliad, Odyssey), real palaces, fortified cities made of stone. 2500 years difference between the 2 civilizations and not real progress, the opposite.
