  • Hi, Flower Friends! Today I am doing my weekly application of Captain Jack's Dead Bug on my dahlia crop with my new Chapin Four Gallon Pump Sprayer. This is the third time using it and so far I am really impressed. It does get a little heavy when it's full but the ease of use is amazing! I also talk about starting Cool Flowers and how important the book is to my business!
    Here is a list of links to the products I use in this video:

    Wow! Thank you for this Nicole. I’m new to gardening and my space is teeny weeny compared with what you manage. But I can see from your video that size doesn’t matter. What matters is the trust of the information. I’m hooked!

    So, let's talk seeds...and cool flowers. I have had Lisa's book since it came out, but no room for the flowers. Fast forward to Spring 2020, a huge tree had to come out and opened up my back yard. I also soil block and will be starting mine soon also. I am zone 8a. Larkspur, nigella, bells of Ireland, snapdragons, bachelor buttons...oh my! And I am still sowing Procut sunflowers seeds for fall. Ah yes, always thinking ahead.

    Just sprayed Captain Jacks last night as well. I have been battling earwigs disfiguring my dahlias the entire season with now the addition of stink bugs and ants. 😕 With so many other species on other flowers and veggies that I’ve never even seen before. This summer has been unreal! I can’t imagine trying to manage floral crops to have pristine buds AND foliage as I am just a homeowner who has nothing that looks good whatsoever and I am organic too. Kudos to you girl!! By the way, flowers are gorgeous! Great job!😀

    Bonide's Bug and slug killer, or Sluggo Plus both contain spinosad which is the main ingredient in Captain Jack's. This is available as a pellet that you just sprinkle around the plants and in my opinion works very well for earwigs. I save the Captain Jack's for spider mites and the white moth's larvae, particularly on petunias. I'm just putting that out there because the spraying is very time consuming and a bit of a pain.

    We are under contract to move to a house with acreage, coming for a lot with .31 acres and most of that is front yard (HOA no-mans-land for gardening). We don't move until mid next month and I am chomping at the bit to start seeds for cool flowers. In 8a so hopeful I will still have time, I know my snaps overwintered just fine that I sowed in September last year. Still might not happen though, the new lot is mostly trees and I will have to clear some to make room for the flowers (hurts my heart to cut down trees but from above you cannot even see the house and I need sunshine!).

      Nobody ever likes to see trees come down but at least you'll be using the space for growing!! I've never had to deal with an HOA but I've heard stories about their restrictions. So funny how different things are in places. We have a lady in town who grows potatoes in the space between the sidewalk and the road. There are no rules! 😂💐

      @@FlowerHillFarm That potato lady is a genius. No one ever told me that potatoes are incredible fresh from the garden, I planted them on a whim this year and holy smokes! They told me about tomatoes but I loathe tomatoes so I do not care, potatoes are where its at!

    I have both of those books and keep in mind when you purchase those books you go to Lisa's website page and there will be videos for those books it's free but you have to request it and she'll send it to you through email

    I follow Lisa on FB and watched all the home cutting garden series she had this spring/summer. She mentioned doing a cool flower home cutting garden starting in August on FB live. I only have the first book. I am going to ask for the other two for Christmas and Birthday this year.
    I do enjoy your channel! You are very entertaining and a real gardener.

    At some point, could you do a video about your grow light set up? I've been trying to research the best approach and I am sooooooooooo confused. TIA!

    I also grow in a zone 4b and wondered if you might have a calendar or schedule for starting seeds and planting in the ground. I love your honest videos!!!! Also, you mentioned you have a cooler, is it a fridge or a walk in cooler? Thank you!

    • @FlowerHillFarm
      @FlowerHillFarm  Před 4 lety +1

      I have two extra fridges. No walkin cooler yet! I need one though as I have no space at the moment! I don't have a calendar so to speak. I spent about a week in the winter writing down days to bloom and seed starting dates for my varieties and succession plantings etc! It was a lot of work and I didn't end up sticking to the plan but it was better than no plan!

    I haven't read all the comments to see if anyone else said this but to save everyone a little time, a little reminder, 4 TB = 1/4 cup. So to fill up that sprayer with four gallons would require a CUP of Captain Jack's. =)

  • @ElderandOakFarm
    @ElderandOakFarm Před 3 lety

    I was going to use your link to get that same backpack sprayer, but there's another one on amazon with an extra foaming nozzle attachment, if you can add that one below I'll use your link. Idk if you get a kick back or not but if so I figured that would help ya out a little....

    My dahlias are covered in ants! Is this a normal thing? Ive search and search for aphids at all different times of the day and have found none, but i have noticed in influx in ants on my bloomed dahlias

    • @mariet4894
      @mariet4894 Před 3 lety

      Ants will hunt for Aphids and black fly and gather them together on a plant like herding haha. It may be they are grabbing the aphids and taking them elsewhere!

    Only 2 TBSP = 1 oz. I hope it did ok. Love your videos. Check my math to make sure. So should have been 6 TBSP in jug

    • @FlowerHillFarm
      @FlowerHillFarm  Před 4 lety +1

      Yes, 2 tbsps in an ounce! The bottle calls for 2 oz. Per gallon. So for 3 gallons that is 6 ounces. 6x2= 12. If you're only only one gallon it is 4 tbsp.

  • @Thingys-Jill
    @Thingys-Jill Před 3 lety +1

    4 tablespoons = 1/4 cup, so you need 3/4 cup of solution for 3 gallons of water. Don't know if you'll get this message . . .

    How long do you think seeds will last? Totally overbought for 2021 🤪🙈

    • @mariet4894
      @mariet4894 Před 3 lety

      They usually last for 2-3 years some longer if you keep them in good conditions. Even longer than that worth planting just plant a lot more than you might need as germination rate will be lower
