    I guessed 550hp! For tunnel rams, I'd like to see a 1:1 linkage on both carbs, so primaries and secondaries open together. That way, you have 1 barrel and 1 jet for each cylinder, and you can read plugs and optimize each cylinder individually. Doing it this way, you forget about primary and secondary side, and don't have to worry about unequal fuel distribution. You can still use the power valve circuit to tune high load, and leave the jets leaner for better cruise.

      Sometimes thats done to surpress the forces of higher static compression ratios at low RPM on the street due to the poor available octane at the pump. A 106 L/S will pump harder down low, if you could find 104 octane and afford it... yes absolutly the improved overlap would make more power.

      I had this engine with a straub cam with these specs on a 107lsa, it was about the same except it had over 550lb/ft of torque at 3000rpm. So, it was about the same. With sideways mounted carbs, the part throttle fueling will be erratic. The secondaries should open 1:1 to properly deliver fuel to the left bank of the engine. Each runner is sitting directly underneath a carburetor butterfly valve. With progressive linkage, you primaries are feeding the right bank and the left bank is getting underfueled.

      That's not how plenums work. You do realize the plenum fills with a mist of fuel air that the cylinders pull from right? The carbs only fill that plenum with fuel air mix

      @@EricErnst so, you're saying that with 1:1 carbs both carbs are squirting fuel out of all 8 holes at once right? One per cylinder. I agree with you. Well only one valve is open at a time, and the other 7 carb holes don't stop squirting when it does so, what happens to the fuel from all other 7 holes of the carb when a valve is open? Does it all suck into the one open valve? All of it? Does it stand to reason a cloud of fuel air mixture will slam into the valve when it closes and not have enough time to turn and go into the next valve which could be at the other end of the engine? So would that not mean it collects into the plenum? If it doesn't work like that, why is it a common plenum? Why isn't there a divider in it? Why isn't there holes going straight from the carbs to the valves?

    • @EricErnst
      @EricErnst Před 8 měsíci +3

      @@lollipop848586:19. It runs rich as hell on the first dyno run so he pulls jet out of the secondaries? With 1:1 carb linkage? You'd pull jet out of all 4 corners to keep fuel distribution more uniform across all 8 cylinders. Yes, it does form a "mist" of air and fuel in the plenum.. but it's not a homogeneous mixture. If the motor is running good, then good for you. But it should have 1:1 linkage and should only pull jet out of a corner if you've got 8 O2 sensors. If not, you're just guessing. Ignorance is bliss, I suppose, but you need to know what's going on in all 8 cylinders before pulling jet out out of an entire bank at once.

    I'm truely sorry to say this, but that is a bad combination showing low on power. A 406 has plenty of inherent torque and so does the tunnel ram. But to wake it up, it needs FAR more cam (at least 265 to 275 @ .050) and with the resulting lower dynamic compression, you can run 12:1 on pump 91 to 94. With a loose converter and some rear gear, that motor can run 650HP all day long, and look the part doing it. The old idea of static compression ratio relating only to street octane, has to be revised by the camshaft designs. A late closing intake, bleeds off a substantial amount of cyld. pressure and drops the "actual" ratio the motor sees.
