In honor of the final episode of Attack on Titan releasing, I felt like taking a dive into a what-if story that has been present in my mind, and the minds of everyone since the finale of the third season of Attack on Titan. As you know, during the battle to retake Shiganshina, Bertholdt Hoover was captured and fed to Armin Arlert to heal him from his grievous wounds he sustained while fighting the Warrior. But at the same time, Erwin Smith, the Commander of the Scouts, had received his own grievous injury, and considering that they only had one syringe of Titan serum and only had one shifter as both Zeke and Reiner were saved by Pieck before the scouts could do anything, the characters and viewers alike knew that there could only be one survivor. The choice was left in the hands of Levi who, at the time, was the senior officer that was still in commission. He had to choose between logic and sentimentality. To choose to save one heroic boy who put everything on the line to bring them victory, or to choose the man who had lost his arm, his comrades, and his humanity, all things he was willing to give up to push the limits of the walls, to discover what was out there, and to make a future where all within the walls could leave the walls without fear of Titans. In the end, as Levi had decided to save Erwin, Erwin quickly pulled his arm away in the middle of a hallucination. This left Levi believing that it was time to let the man he had respected for so long have his rest. In the end, he chose Armin over Erwin and literally passed the torch from one blonde tactician to another. But what if Levi hadn’t gone with his heart and instead brought back the Devil himself? What would have changed? Well, walk with me into the Paths and let’s look at a timeline in which Erwin was the one who survived.
