  • Once Mego went out of business DC had to fill the toy void left behind. This is the history of Kenners DC Comics Super Powers line with their squeezable legs and their slightly bent arms.

    The only time Jack Kirby, the King of Comics, got royalties for his Fourth World work. That alone makes it alright.

      Facts! Kirby was robbed by the comics industry! He was criminally underpaid considering all of the contributions he made to comics! In both Marvel and DC.
      As I understand it from what I've read on the topic, even with the Superpowers Toy line, Kirby wouldn't have seen any royalties if some DC editors didn't have him redesign some of the Fourth World characters for the line!
      This kind of rampant corporate profiting off of the creativity and invention of artists/writers while not allowing actual creators to profit from their art beyond a salary, or-- more likely for comics artists/writers --freelance pay. Disgusting, imo

      @ChapMeifan Před 3 lety +6

      @@BronzeAgeBryon Oh I totally agree. I miss when I could buy a whole line for around $30 and vehicles were more expensive but wouldn't bankrupt you. It's insanity that a figure costs $50 and a vehicle is $500. It's no wonder kids aren't interested anymore. Toy companies priced them out of the sandbox.

    • @jawbone78
      @jawbone78 Před 3 lety +2

      @@ChapMeifan it wasn't toy companies, it was adult collectors. Makers of action figures learned that they could over sculpt and over charge for figures because adult collectors will pay literally anything, and are way better customers than kids because kids don't have money. The toy companies just follow the market.

      I'd never heard of Dr Fate (DC's answer to Doctor Strange?) until the Super Powers toy line. Based on his little profile card on the back, he sounded like an interesting character who should have gotten more attention. Needless to say I was quite thrilled to discover that not only Dr Fate, but also Hawkman, were being featured in the Black Adam movie. I still have yet to see it, but I'm looking forward to see what the good Doctor can do with that mystical magic of his.

    The 2nd Super Powers miniseries was great and the best introduction of many of the Fourth World villains to the greatest DC heroes. It used more Apokolips than DC villains and the Darkseid costume was iconic.

    They have a memory that is reluctant to leave my head. I went with my brother and father to a department store in the city of Santo André. This store called "Jumbo Eletro". From what I researched, this store still exists in Africa.
    And at the time the Super Powers were being launched here in Brazil by a company called "Estrela". I saw a wall with dozens of Super Powers and unfortunately at that time, my father was unable to buy them. After he bought.
    Man, I had the following action figures in the 80's: Batman, Superman and Robin. And I also got Batman's helicopter and Superman's ship from my father. Everything, absolutely everything, my mother donated to other children and I was very upset about that.
    Now I'm going to try to buy some, which were released by Macfarlane Toys. Yesterday I bought a Darkseid, I'm waiting for it to arrive! This collection is the best ever! But for us who live in Brazil it is very difficult to acquire these items.

    This was after my time but man did I make sure to check all these out (least the first wave or two) to see who they had. It brought back memories of Pocket Heroes and the 8" Megoes (for variety). Still the best superhero line I've ever seen (including modern, IMHO). But Justice Jogger? And no Invisible Jet? And shame that if they were going to update (unsuccessfulky for my taste) the super mobile that they'd leave out it key feature, those awesom mechanical hands. Least we finally got to see it with that McFarlan line (even if it seems to stacked high in clearance aisles for some reason). I just wish the line had gone on one or two waves longer (orskip Cyclone and Golden Pharoah so we could see some others (Kid Flash, Aqualad, jay Garrick-Flash, did they do Zatanna or Supergirl?).

As an adult, I bought my first Batman, Joker, Penguin, and second Robin (all loose/complete) for around $75 in 1999. In 2001, I opened a 12-back carded Superman up and lived my childhood dream that evaded me at a Ben Franklin store in 1985.I still have this C-9+ figure today. After that, I started buying the others up until I had the complete set. I had to sell some around 4 years ago, but I got them back. I vowed never to sell them again. They cost way more than you can sell them for to get them back. If you have any (especially any of the third series), don't sell them unless you have no intentions of buying them back.

    Today it lives on through Tweeterhead and their 1/6 scale DC Super Power statues.

    This was indeed a great, great figure line, so much so that, despite not knowing who half the secondary and back-up characters were (I was a Marvel kid), I still bought them.
    The Toy Biz figures were so blatantly rip-offs, and poor ones at that, I never actually opened any of them -- and I ALWAYS opened my toys! They remain somewhere in the abandoned toy room of my mom's house, no doubt yellowing on their cards in the darkness.

    A rare action figure in this collection was the Released-In-Argentina-Only figure of The Riddler. Cuick S.A. was the Argentinean manufacturer that got the license from Kenner to make these, and sold it as "Super Amigos" (Super Friends) instead of Super Powers. The Riddler action figure was cast from a Green Lantern mold, but painted with the Riddler's iconic bright green, purple, and question marks. czcams.com/video/g5etrjifUyc/video.html

    Love the embedded bloopers. So funny. So what would happen if Hasbro absorbed Mattel? Or would it be the other way around? Thoughts: Hasttel or Matsbro?!?!

    There were two versions of the Cyborg action figure, the gray looking one and the even rare shiny metallic version.
