People had the same worries for Nagpur Metro a few years back.
But looking at the traffic conditions, it became evident that after 10 years, it would be "IMPOSSIBLE" to construct a single Metro line because the traffic would be 20X worse and dense.
Now, when I look at Pune Metro and the traffic, I wish it would have been constructed 10 years ago when the population was half of what it is today.

    Few more points..
    1) Having same type of metro train network across India provides excellent support system
    2) It gives lot of bargaining power to Govt to reduce manufacturing and depoynent costs due to economis of scale
    3) A support engineering skill set will be setup where mass engineers are adopting and working in this sector with long term (more than 100 years) careers.
    4) If a metro is getting failed in a city can be given to other company to operate. The company can take risk if operating multiple systems. Experience will eventually make it profitable.
    5) Single type of rails, metro rakes, electric amd ancilliary systems and experience means less and less chances of failure. It works like charms and very reliable.
    6) Grade separation is very important for cities in Infia where civic sense is almost non existant. At grade transport systems will cause chaos and accidents.

I'm excited to see what route they will pick with metro because current inner cities of Muzaffarpur is not at all feasible for Metro construction.. maybe this could lead to creation of a new city of Muzaffarpur.
Also I'm against the argument that metro should only be in overcrowded cities.. do you know what metro's contribution to traffics of overcrowded cities is? It's almost negligible.. so start sooner when there are less cars on the road and people get used to public transport so they don't buy cars that much.
The biggest argument i hear is "Well, this other city has this much population and it still doesn't have a metro".. don't you wish it had before it's traffic became what it is today?

Actually no.. it will take a min of 10 years to build a metro and by that time petrol and diesel rates would sky rocket. To travel 1KM in small cities like muz you'd have to pay 20rs, metro currently takes 10rs and might increase to 12-15rs.
And people will start affording it just like they started affording monthly recharges. It's just a matter of convenience.
