  • We didn't have no where to live, / we didn't have nowhere to go
    'til someone said / "I know this place off Burditt Road."
    It was on the fifteenth floor, / it had a board across the door.
    It took an hour / to pry it off and get inside. / It smelt as if someone had died;
    the living-room was full of flies, / the kitchen sink was blocked,
    the bathroom sink not there at all. / Ooh, / it's a mess alright, / yes it's
    Mile End. / And now we're living in the sky! / I'd never thought I'd live so
    high, / just like Heaven / (if it didn't look like Hell.)
    The lift is always full of piss, / the fifth floor landing smells of fish
    (not just on Friday, / every single other day.)
    Below the kids come out tonight, / they kick a ball and have a fight
    and maybe shoot somebody if they lose at pool.
    Ooh, / it's a mess alright, / yes it's / Mile End.
    [mumbled mutterings... you love it...]
    Oo-ooh / Nobody wants to be your friend
    'cause you're not from round here, / ooh / as if that was
    something to be proud about. / The pearly king of the Isle of Dogs
    feels up children in the bogs. / Down by the playing fields,
    someone sets a car on fire I guess you have to go right down
    before you understand just how, / how low,
    how low a human being can go. / Ooh, / it's a mess alright, / yes it's
    Mile End. / (don't do that! Leave it out!) / Bababa...
    Lalala...

    Jarvis' song writing is blinding and it's a sign of a good writer when he can relate quite intimately but en masse.For me this song evokes quite poignant memories from when we I was a teenager and we squatted a big old house back in the day when squatters actually had rights and I dare say a lot of people have similar memories as it's a scenario we all likely went through growing up,needing somewhere to chill with your pals.Fantastic song and it was only ever gonna be successful wasn't it?

    People who never did drugs or had addictions problems don't get it never will its a terrible life once you stop caring and the changes to you are irreversible but the high is so mighty so inhuman forever will it haunt you I'm clean for 8 years and although the struggle gets easier its ever present

    • @jackduncan4228
      @jackduncan4228 Před 5 lety +6

      Easy Grin I agree with you. Addiction is a hellish business. There’s a lyric in a Motörhead song ‘it’s gonna steal your face’. Anyone who has had a heroin addiction or speed addiction will know what I mean. Excessive speed use eats your face. Heroin abuse just lets years pass you by in an instant and you look in the mirror one day and don’t recognise the middle aged wanker staring back at you. Drugs really do change you forever. I’ve seen so many of my friends and acquaintances die young as a direct result of opiates such as heroin, methadone and the now discontinued pill palfium (It was a strange drug someone could inject two dissolved pills one day and another day inject half a pill and that half would kill him. Taking that drug was like playing Russian roulette). An old girlfriend of mine had a catastrophic stroke from taking too much speed, she died at the age of seventeen. Once you’ve been deep in that lifestyle and you live long enough to realise you need out. You will be forever haunted, it’s a form of PTSD.

      The simplicity of knowing you only have one task in life (dope) is what I miss.

      Konig Corvus in that sense it’s one hell of an antidepressant. You only have one care in the world and when that’s fixed everything is good again for six hours or so depending on the quality of the gear. I agree with you. I had one task to see to a day and sure I’d have to see to it sometimes six times (so I had a bag to wake up with), but yeah in many ways life was more simple. But in my town you had to watch for nutters with knives and bars that would pull the old “you’re bag or your life”. Many times I engaged in knife fights or ran like a scalded cat to keep hold of my stuff.

      So true. You chase that first high forever. As time goes by your soul is crushed little by little as you kiss goodbye to "normalcy", you sell your morals very quickly, hell, if you could sell your family you would, just for that short term fix.
      I'm 4 years clean and every day that calling is echoing through my mind. Any little hiccup through the day and that monkey really looks appealing. It's never the same once you go down that lane.

  • @samfromportadown
    @samfromportadown Před 3 měsíci

    Some blogger called Diamond Geezer did an analysis on this cross referencing the lyrics against known tower blocks in the area and concluded that Jarvis squatted in Lewey House. Possibly it could also have been Elmslie Point, which is 19 floors and therefore also has a 15th floor obviously, but Elmslie Point is right on Burdett Road. Lewey House more fits the bill of being "off" Burdett road.

    This girl I used to sit next to in art class would tell me that everytime she heard Jarvis sing, she'd get jelly in her knickerbockers. I asked, whaddya get when you hear me sing? She laughed and quipped, it rhymes with loo, and has a nasty aroma. I told her, you must mean love bumps, and stong heart beats. She told me to piss off, but leave the Pulp CD. Teenage angst that was, pure n simple.
