How To Do The Gutless Method | Gerber Field Dressing (Ep. 01)

  • How to do the gutless method on an elk (or deer, pronghorn, moose, etc.). In this video, Randy Newberg is using his new Gerber exchange blade knife on a recently harvested elk in New Mexico. He does a thorough overview on how to do the gutless method while also caping the animal.
    Randy suggests to start on the pieces that are easiest, depending on how to animal fell as well as the topography that you have to do the field dressing on. Make sure to know the requirements of proof of sex before you start field dressing.
    Randy starts with a dorsal cut along the spine. From there he starts working on the quarters, one side at a time. Once one half of the elk is done, you can flip the elk (or other animal) over and repeat the same processing mirroring what you just did on the other side.

    THIS is the GOOD stuff Randy. THIS shows care for the meat. THIS shows it's NOT about the trophy. When I'm done, it's a pink skeleton, and I'm not trying to make a profit at cutting... I'm trying to end up with the most possible weight in meat. NOTHING chaps my hide more, than to watch a video of some knucklehead killing an animal and then looking at the lens and saying.... "Uhhh... guess I'd better go back to camp and get some help." Not ONE bit of effort to get that meat preserved/cooled. THIS type of video you're giving today is the reason you have a solid/loyal subscriber base. It doesn't get any more ethical than to properly care for your meat (whatever means you choose to do so). Nice work Randy/crew.

      This, in my mind, is the most important part of the hunt. My parents and grandparents made proficient meat care the "right of passage" for acceptance into their hunting and fishing circles.

    Thanks Randy for real hunting videos! This video reflects 2/3s of my experience, in 20 years of hunting. Most of my successful days end - tired, cold, dark- and the works only begun.
    I’m glad my sons are old enough to start hunting with me last year. Shots feel less melancholy and gutting/ dragging sure feels less depressing with good company!
    Here in PA we have millions of acres of public ground that allows no camping so it’s all in and out every day. Bear are required to be brought into a check station within 24 hours. One of these days I’ll get some were that I can spike camp there and deal with it in the morning 😁

    Great stuff Randy! I've done this method the last 2 bulls I've harvested and even converted my brother to the gutless method. First time he thought I was crazy and swore we wouldn't get as much meat as they way we have always done it. I was fortunate enough to be able to go home (Arizona) last year and harvest a bull under the CHAMP program and he couldn't wait to try it again! Hopefully this video will show guys that it's a great way to harvest as much meat as the traditional way and stay 10x's cleaner for both you and the meat. Can't wait to see what's next.

    Hey randy can you do a video on how to skin an elk to keep the hide for fleshing and tanning. I'm not the type to mount my animal's so I'm not to worried about doing the taxidermist Cape type cut. I just keep the head and do a European style mount. I would like to know where to cut the elk so I can get the whole hide for fleshing and tanning.

  • @patrickburgmeier7902
    @patrickburgmeier7902 Před 4 lety +1

    Just so I'm clear. To do a full body mount or to keep the hide in one piece to sell or whatever, you would have started between the legs, ie up the inside of each leg and spilt it up the belly to connect the 4 leg cuts then peeled the off and around the down the back then lastly the neck. Realizing that the job would be easier if the animal was hanging head down from a stout tree.

      My father and I each got a moose in Alaska (same time/place). He started in on his, I started in on mine. We worked with knives ONLY. In five hours' time, they were gutted/skinned/quartered and ready to transport. The only difference was that dad's pile looked nicer (many more years' worth of experience). So, you can process an animal as large as a moose by yourself in that amount of time. The smaller the animal, the less time needed (easier to manage).
