- Working on my backlog of projects, that grows ever larger and I grow older. Figured it was time to finish this thing I started over 3 years ago. Here's a first demo, I'll make an in-depth video re: code and graphics once it's complete!

Hey Ben,
Hope you're doing well! Just wanted to say how much I love your videos. Your projects are always super cool, especially when you turn gaming consoles into portable devices. Those are my favorites!
It would be awesome to see more of those portable projects. I know a lot of people, including myself, really enjoy them. Your work is always inspiring and fun to watch.
Thanks for all the great content, and hope to see more soon!
Cheers
Wish more people were making homebrew for these little things, this is awesome!
I think the physical hardware hacking aspect, as in having to replace the flash chip, is too big of a hurdle for casual enthusiasts. I've been working with Arduino etc. for years, lots of practice soldering, and I still found it challenging and it took quite a bit of effort. Oh, and I just happened to have an STM device laying around to dump / flash the memory with, which a lot of people do not.
I agree though, it is such a neat little piece of hardware, I wish there had been more interest in it :(
@@joeblow229There's a good amount of stuff out there for it though it does tend to lean heavily on emulation.
Glad you are back making videos. Love it. Keep up the good work
Interesting to see this, and on this hardware
That looks remarkably good. Tapper was one of my favorite games on c64. Difficulty looks bit harder than original.
So cool! I really love these Game and Watch units, and I wish more people had taken interest in them when they came out. Thank you for documenting your work Ben, I really enjoy seeing your projects :)
That looks so good! Nice work Ben!
Good old "Tapper", this seems a lot harder than the Apple ][ version.
It always made me mad when the guy would punch me for making him wait. My bar, my rules, buddy. This game needs a bouncer.
Is there variant that does that? Iirc all versions I've played customer rams bar tender head on to the wall through table. Gotta be bad festival for all customers to be so angry to get beer 😂
Problem is the bouncer punches you even harder!
This is cool, man! I got a second game and watch just for this a couple years ago when you said you were going to do this, actually.
Also, I 3d printed a holder for this that makes it a desk clock when in clock mode. Best desk clock ever! It's like a little clock mario fish tank going on. I use it every day on my desk at work. It's so great! I can get you the file if you want to try it out.
How do you keep it on? I know the Zelda unit can be left on, but doesn't the Mario variant turn the screen off after a few minutes?
@@joeblow229 It can stay on always when it's plugged in. I do have the Mario version as the clock. I have a USB-C plug fastenend into it making it like a dock for the Game and Watch that it slides into.
very cool
What a great idea! Tapper is perfect for conversion to an LCD game. I do think the main guy should look more like Mario though, I mean, he does in the arcade anyway!
it looks really good
Looks fun great work 👍
Cool idea!
I am still so annoyed that Nintendo didn't add the original YM-105 Super Mario G&W game on the new super mario bros G&W system... Been wanting to hack it in there for quite some time, so really cool to see a good template for how to make the G&W games on the system!
They didn’t put the ZL-65 Zelda G&W game on the Legend of Zelda one either, it’s like they didn’t care what fans wanted. 😂
Right? Super Mario Bros was almost certainly the best game ever released in the Game & Watch series. Definitely more exciting than Ball, anyway.
@@Super_Bros. Nintendo caring about the fans.. when has that ever happened?! 😄
@@sirhcman
Exactly that’s why I added the 😂. Nintendo has never cared about fans.
Looks great! I always thought it would be appropriate to install the first three Game & Watch Gallery games (for Gameboy) on it.
i like how the background emulates that grainy crystal like texture in the real lcds to make them reflect light better. makes it look more authentic
Yes after the background is drawn there's a random noise pass applied to achieve that look.
Very cool!
The sound is on point.
Looks like a fun classic game & i'll be waiting for that future video, would love to put something custom on one of these myself 👍
that is very cool !
I love that game i thought it was dumb when they changed it to root beer tapper
Such a clever game
Would love to play this on anything and not just Nintendo’s G&W!
This is fuckin' awesome man!
You mad lad Ben.
wanna try my game?
cool. luv ya
that's cool as hell I didn't know they had software mods on this thing
It's just an off-the-shelf STM32 MCU, a fairly beefy one. But you have to "jailbreak it"
Tapper is a cool game, I played it once on a arcade1up thing, it felt legit because you had the 2 joysticks
It looks visually accurate, the opacity and visual noise are dead on.
That is a cool game. I like it !!!! 😀
Awesome ❤
dude that looks haaaard
Yeah it kind of is. I need to add level scaling and stuff.
Very cool, it took me a moment to wrap my head around what's going on ... "Wait, there was a Tapper G&W!? Why does it say Super Mario Bros?!"
The hardest part of accuracy in designing these is sticking to the 100 segment limit the original chips were capable of driving. I mean, design however you want, but going way over that 100 segment limit tends to make games that don’t quite feel period accurate.
Do you know what specs you'd need for a replacement screen for one of these? Any idea if any compatible ones out there?
For how inexpensive they are for an entire unit, I'd think just buy a new one..?
I recall the arcade game Tapper which seems similar, which came first: that or this LCD Matrix game?
I got the Zelda model for about 20 or 25 USD. Does it have the same chip?
They are all the same except for cosmetics
@@ToTheGAMES And Zelda has 2 extra buttons.
The Zelda version is the one I'd pick to 'hack' (which, I did). You can swap the original firmware for something else with the stock flash-memory, or, you can remove the flash chip and install a bigger one if you want to go with homebrew / hacks / ROMs. I decided to install the bigger flash chip, run stock firmware, and also have the option of running emulators.
This really inspires the question
What is the most gamedev-friendly all-encompassing microcontroller today?
The one you can code.
That's a big question that deserves an in-depth answer. I think the Pico has a ton of untapped potential, and it's cheap, but I'm not the 'expert' you're looking for to answer this. As far as 'microcontroller', then yeah, the Pico would be my pick. If you mean an 'all in one unit', then it would probably be to hack one of the PowKiddy or other Chinese handhelds and add your own home-brew code.
So where is Bud in this game?
If he's not in it, then the game is Bud light.
I learned there was an emulation of sorts for the old LCD hand helds like this. I grew up in the 80s with those Tiger Hand helds. I have a love hate relationship I guess. Ben if there are "roms" for these types of games out there due to emulation how difficult would it be to implement those games into the game and watch?
I thought this was called tapper
some bunch of people made a tapper homebrew port(that they put on carts and sold, i think) and called it beer slinger to avoid issues.
Ah, nice! It would be nice if you can make (bigger sized) typical Nintendo character sprites with more (face) expression and 'movement' (character in a sligtly other angle etc). Make a tilt screen so you can see all of characters at once. Idea for an extra difficulty; A woman at the bar and wants wine instead of beer or a woman that takes the beer of a man (by flirting) so you need to throw a second beer. 😄
Difficulty level: Divorced Dad lol.. :)
Ben Heck made lions realize how much Trump mirrored the hero's journey of mythology.
Fapper?
So this more or less was Nintendo NES emulator to begin with and you are forcing it to imitate a ""LCD TIGER Electronic Game"" ???
That game does not look fun to play.
