You've just explained exactly what yoga is really about. It's not about the pose and being perfect, it's about doing what your body can do and what feels good! I've been practicing for 9 years and I'm the Queen of modifying and using props! Then again I was extremely lucky to have a great yoga teacher who was a retired physio. Even before I started going to a class, I read what yoga is truly about. I already knew that if there was a posture that my body didn't like to either do an alternative with the same benefits or sit it out and breath. Warrior 2 my body loves warrior 1 cripples me, lower back hates it so I don't do it. A tip for everyone though, leave your ego at the door, yoga isn't about competition. If you're too busy worrying about what others can achieve, yoga isn't for you

I'm actually opposite. I'm dreading the switch through from Warrior 1 into Warrior 2. When in Warrior 2, she says to tuck your pelvis like you're right up against a wall... my lower back is like- Um?, No thank you!!... and I carry on in stance as my body/back wills.

These are great. I appreciate the stretching insight from a medical standpoint.

I would appreciate more of these, maybe even reactions/corrections to different popular yoga routine video series. I like the prevention.

Well done Dr. Lin!! Great advice for modifications to these poses that are done very frequently in classes. I dont teach pigeon pose anymore and do the same variation you showed and it works much much better for my knee and hip happiness :)

With all due respect, it's not the poses that hurt people but people doing the poses with bad form that hurt people. Spinal twist, for instance. People twist without using core strength and hurt their backs, then blame the pose. In pidgeon, people fold forward without core stability or pelvic alignment and hurt their hips. I can name how every yoga pose can hurt you if you do them incorrectly, that does not mean you go back to the couch to watch Netflix and worsen your posture way more than yoga ever could. If you're doing yoga, know what you're doing. Don't get hurt then go crying to PT's that yoga, not ignorance, was the culprit.

Thank you. I hate it when people say to just stop doing something or branding certain activities or poses as "bad" when really it's just that it's being practiced incorrectly. Primal squat is a perfect example! There are literally doctors saying it's unnatural because some people hurt their knees trying to do it! Yeah you know because sitting on a toilet to poop is so natural! 😂

I would rather take the word of a knowledgeable person that knows the mechanics of the body over anyone else words about the human body’s “abilities”. If some movement is done incorrectly your really going to be “feeling” that for a while.

Thank you for this information!! Dailyish- I do both warrior 2 and pigeon. However, I do love the feeling of my hip stretching during pigeon (the other way not yours), but I soo get what you're saying about the knee. Tomorrow I will def try your pigeon form suggestion.

Yoga is not stretching, they don't go with the body flow, yoga poses are made to make your body resemble an idol that is worshipped by the Hindu. When you do yoga poses you are worshiping idols. You don't see top athletes doing yoga, they do physical therapy stretches that are scientific that help the body, not against it.
