    Those canary melons are really beautiful, love the color. I have already harvested most of my watermelons but there are a few still ripening up. Watermelons that I grew this year are Klondike Blue Ribbon, Orangeglo, Moon and Stars, Moon and Stars Yellow, Ali Baba, and White Sugar Lump. Cantaloupes that I grew this year are Golden Jenny Lind, Honey Rock, and Old Time Tennessee.

    • @ChristasGarden
      @ChristasGarden Před 9 lety

      It isn't as impressive as it sounds, lol. I only plant one of each variety, so 6 watermelon plants and 3 cantaloupe plants. I would have to pick Klondike Blue Ribbon as my favorite watermelon. It is crunchy, super sweet, and productive. My favorite cantaloupe this year was Golden Jenny Lind.

    • @bradsmalley7168
      @bradsmalley7168 Před 9 lety

      Also I've found it best to use cattle panels for tomato cages. I can get 3 cages from each one. The holes are plenty large enough to reach through to prune and harvest. When you tie each one to a single Tpost, I've never had one collapse of fall over on me. And in the SW Kansas wind that is definitely worth the investment!

  • @TABULOUS1
    @TABULOUS1 Před 9 lety

    4:14 .....Oh, ok. Because the whole time I was thinking about my watermelons & how these tips didn't quite jive with how they ripened.
    Although I also like&respect chilled fruit, there is something compelling to me about fresh-picked sun-warmed fruit (that would normally be enjoyed chilled). I LOVE eating melons/tomatoes/cukes warm from the vine, just as much as I enjoy them chilled. And my body responds to reiterate that I'm getting the most nutrients that way. I always feel full&satisfied but much 'lighter' after enjoying them that way -- like after a salad or something.
    Great video. Imma have to check out the watermelon one (unless you were referring to the one you've already made, in which case I've seen it :P)

    • @CaliKim29
      @CaliKim29  Před 9 lety

      +ToughLoveTV yes, i meant to say that this method is for cantaloupe family at the beginning of the video but forgot! And I agree bout the sun warmed veggies! That is my fav way to eat tomatoes and cantaloupe, strawberries, raspberries and most things from the garden. The melon is good warm too, but I do love it chilled! So refreshing on a hot day!
      And in case you're do want to check it out, here's a link to the watermelon vid I was referring to: czcams.com/video/HWa3VWt7RVo/video.html. Good luck with your melons!

    Beautiful melons that you grew, I hadn't grown any until last year thinking it would take too long, but after tasting them, they were delicious. This year I didn't have the time or room, but a bird dropped a watermelon seed and now it's up and I thing ready to pick although, being my first watermelon, I'm not sure. I'm so ready to taste it. The little curly vine by the last leaf is dried up and the vine is dying, so I think It's time, what do you think? Kim

    • @CaliKim29
      @CaliKim29  Před 9 lety +3

      +The Abled Gardener These small melons don't take quite as long to grow as the big watermelons. Not a good year for the big melons for me, but I'm very pleased to these bits of sunshine in my garden this year. So cool that you got a volunteer melon - I've found the volunteers to sometimes be the most productive! The curly tendril being dried up is a sure sign that they are ready to pick! Go for it! And watch this video for my fantastic melon harvest: czcams.com/video/HWa3VWt7RVo/video.html. The brown tendril was the key for me here! Thx so much for watching!

    You mentioned vine slip. I've noticed on the cantaloupe at work that where the vine meets the melon it develops a crack similar to the top of a baked cake in the pan. Pulling up the black plastic the other day we found a watermelon that grew under it. It was about half yellow, half green in color due to the lack of light. Similar to how a watermelon turns yellow on the bottom where it rests on the ground.

    • @CaliKim29
      @CaliKim29  Před 9 lety

      +2 AM Yes, that vine slip is a great indication that the cantaloupe it ripe! Interesting about your watermelon - I have found the dry tendril closest to the watermelon to be the key factor for ripeness. Thx for watching!

    • @stvrob6320
      @stvrob6320 Před 9 lety

      +CaliKim29 Garden & Home DIY With cantalopes, full slip means the vine simply lets go of the fruit with a tiny bit of thumb pressure. In my experience with Canary melons, they never slip, even if you let them rot on the vine, they dont slip. I have found some sources on the internet that say canary melons slip when ripe, but I have never found that to be the case, others say they do not slip. I cannot explain the discrepancy, but I would not consider the melons on this video to be full slip based on my understanding of its meaning.

      I'd be very interested to hear your experience with that! From what I understand about mitteleider its basically just an overabundance of fertilizer while taking the soil out of the question. I'm in SW Kansas where its plenty hot but also plenty dry. I've found it best to start raising soil instead of vegetables. Heavy mulch and organic material of all kinds to capture all moisture and keep the soil cool. The produce has been taking care of itself.

    Kim is the Canary Melon a type of Honeydew Melon, because they look identical? I wish I could grow Melon But here in the UK we don't have climate and it is not worth planting as you can buy a large Honeydew for a £1 in the Supermarket. I think it is interesting that in your part of the world where I would struggle to grow some of your crops, you would find easy and vice versa.Any Road (True Yorkshire expression) I have been reading a book by James Wong Here in the UK called 'Grow for Flavour' and it does really change your mind about gardening, because most gardeners do not use a scientific approach and hence produce bland tasting produce. In the book it has the following Myths1) Home-grown always taste better.2) Heirloom varieties always taste better.3) Growing in a pot is easier4) Pests are all Bad.5) Fresh is best.6) Pretty much everything you have been told on how to plant trees.7) That defoliating tomatoes will help ripen fruit.

      +Puff I always tent to over plant, and actually have now idea how many plants are in this space, the vines are so intertwined, its impossible to tell. How productive they are depends on so many factors. I've had problems with bugs, rodents and disease in my melon patch, and all garden wide this year and those factors have affected productivity In spite of these factors, these plants are fairly productive, although I wouldn't say they are loaded with fruit. As far as cherry toms, right now I have reisentraube and morning sun growing, both very productive, reisentraube more so. Are you planting melons and tomatoes right now, or planning for your spring garden?
