    The guy is known to make fun of the South Korean elite. He often got into trouble for it too. This song is just one of many songs in which he ridicules the typical upper class living in the Gangnam region of Seoul. He sees them as empty people without any real originality or morals. They just do whatever seems to be trendy at that time. Much like Hollywood and silicon valley, actually. We all know those type of people all too well, right? People who value virtue signalling far more than possessing actual virtues.

  • @Hanzan

    Gangnam is the affluent rich part of Seoul. With a plastic surgeon or two on every street. Gangnam Style is a satire of the typical upper class Seoulite life. Yoga, horses, luxury cars. Psy wants to portray himself as a resident of Gangnam, living the high life, but is most likely faking it. Psy has been a big star in Korea since the early 2000s, mixing humour and social commentary, but Gangnam Style went viral and became a phenomena in 2012.
    The girl was Hyuna, one of the biggest Korean female popstars. A lot of the features in the video are various famous Korean comedians and artists.

    • @thekillingtomat
      @thekillingtomat Před 4 lety +4

      i honestly think Hyuna was a big reason why this song got so big. before gangnam style came out, her song bubble pop became main stream in western culture but not at the same level as this song obviously. it was featured a lot as break music in video game tournaments, namely league of legends and starcraft 2. thats also where i heard gangnam style first, when the music video on yt only had about 1 mil views. it was in the midst of league of legends explosion onto the competitive scene where it went from backyard tournaments to filling stadiums so there were hundreds of thousands of ppl watching the live stream and everyone heard these odd k-pop songs played and got hooked.
      hyuna opened the door with bubble pop and then psy came crashing through with gangnam style and took the world by storm

    @PureMatteo Před 4 lety +3

    Okay so i know a little bit korea, so here is why this song became popular, and a few interesting facts
    - Gangnam is the trendy and chic/rich part of Seoul. The song is a satyre of the rich people
    - The lyrics is also a play on words with "Oppa" means either daddy, or "big brother" but it's a term females will use to call their older biggest friend (only one) who is usually also their crush and they could still call their love this way. It's not a gross term for them it's not a fetish related term it's literally a strong affection term and indeed is different from the english term. It's often a first step to call someone your boyfriend, and these kind of steps are taken very seriously in eastern countries where appelations to call someone are very codified. So "oppa gangnam's style" means in a nutshell if you take into account the song and the character "my sugar daddy from gangnam". Oppa is normally an emotional appelation but in this context it's used satyrically. The first line means "i have" but also sounds like "daddy gangnam style"
    - Psy has made a success of himself by not taking himself seriously while, actually, producing quality content. His full shows are remarkably long for kpop artists and suprisingly enjoyable
    - He was the first with this video to breach the billion views, and it was the highest viewed video of all times until Despacito was released, for many several years which is insane considering how tiny korea is
    - He made several even better and more hilarious videos
    - He has earned the highest revenues as a kpop artist by breaking the codes and reaching the world, also he happened to be successful at the moment kpop really exploded which helped
    - The girl in the metro he meets is actually a VERY famous korean artist named Hyuna. The fact she's only a dancer in the video is huge because she was and is still huge in korea
    - With this money, and the fact a lot of kpop artists are abused in the kpop industries, Psy created his own label which is probably preparing the first releases now. Supposedly he wants to give more fair contracts and pretty much everyone who empathise with those artists hope this turns out to be true. P Nation (the label Psy created) also recruited her boyfriend who also got sacked for this "scandal". They're both signed by Psy now.
    - incidently, Hyuna gave the finger to her label when they created a scandal out of the fact she has a relationship (a lot of artists have abusive clauses in their contracts including not touching the money for many years, not being allowed to date anyone in order to bank on the crazy fans who are more attracted to their artists if they are single officially). She was big enough to drop the contract and "not care", also she has a very strong character and was "old" enough to probably be financially safe and with a good and strong public image to be able to pull that off in korea
    - She is actually now I believe with Psy's label together with a few other groups or solo artists who had similar sttories and probably some newcomers
    - Ultimately this song was an entry song for the 2010s generation to kpop which is booming at the moment
    - women in korea are very thin, men too, it's just how they are, you have to take it into consideration when watching their videos. A video talking about beauty in kpop will relate to their own view of what is beautiful : a thin person with a very very strong emphasize on face beauty which is extremely codified in korea leading to incredible amount of surgery at low age to meet this unattainable beauty standards.
    - if you find "man to man" attraction in KR videos/stories, you have to know showing affection to your male friend even physically is normal in korea. Men holding hands when friends or being close physically is a normal thing in korea and is not conneted either romantically sexually while in some countries you'll hear people say "ew superr gay". The video doesn't really tackle this, I think this part of the video is just showing another "stupid rich mama boy and his sportscar". so you're correct in saying they were having fun, physical proximity between male friends in korea is normal. Being physically close between a man and a female is a BIG thing there though. It's more normal to see two people of the same sex hold hands than say, people holding hands when they're still at the flirt stage.
    - korea is obsessed with being clean. You can bet the metro's poles are cleaner than parts of your house like your door handle. I just wanted to point that out ! That's cultural in their country to be healthy, fit, clean, and helped their corona confinement because they are already prepared with tests and have social behaviours engraved in their life for whenever you get sick.
    - Hyuna is the main kpop feature here (she even has her own version of the song available) but partts of the video are satyres of previous kpop videos that took themselves very seriously portraying rich lifestyles.
    That's why this song is a landmark in modern pop history IMO because of how it impacted the world of music, its repercussions and what its success represented for a whole country's industry. I didn't expand on it, but the satyre on the rich is an important thematic in korea because the country is highly divided between the rich and the poor because capitalism was introduced after its de facto occupation by america and its transformation after their civil war. The country is full of corruption stories from their biggest companies, all while some people literally live in dumps. The success of the first movie oscar for Parasite is also a consequence of it and shows what is unfortunately a reality in the country. It helped the song resonate in korea first, launching it in the world as a second effect.

      Some good info... Yeah the cultures are very different, so it can be odd for westerners. And most of the Eastern countries have their own unique cultural aspects, even if outwardly they have a lot of similarities. Many do share the aspect of having strict codes of behavior regarding certain aspects of life, especially concerning relations between men and women. The details may be a bit different though.

      Because bare minimum research (first page on google) will prove that this is obvious satire about South Korean middle-class and all they did was throw the lyrics into Google translate and guess and made some racist remarks about southeast asians. Furthermore, Vin laughing almost throughout the whole song and still giving it a 2 when it's clearly meant to be satirical and funny seems odd, that would be like him headbanging through the entirety of master of puppet and then giving it a 4/10. This song is meant to be funny, not good. He agreed that it was funny and didn't reflect on that, their children had seen it. Whenever a music video makes it big across the younger generations it's usually a very good indicator that it's something with humorous elements.

    It's pure satire... Making fun of the self absorbed lifestyle of the rich, and those that want to be like them. He also throws in the trappings of typical music video tropes that attempt to convey the person as being of the more affluent type. We have all seen these types of videos... Even a previously unknown artist may have their first single and video fit the mold of this style.
    That is why all the various shots of the video emulate things you may see in a music video that is un-ironically trying to portray such a lifestyle... But they end up being shown as fake cheap knockoffs.
    He looks like he is on a beach, nope it's a playground. The whole wind blown thing, it's actually trash. He is on a plane... Sitting on the toilet. None of the shoot locations are anywhere that is actually up-scale. Even the part with the horses is shot in the barn, where the workers are, and the rich owners never go.
    This is definitely not my style of music, but due to the satire and true message of the song, I can appreciate it more, even if I don't want to actively seek it out for a listen.
    The amusing part of this, is that the USA helped drive the popularity of the song to the level that it did... And this subtext floated over the heads of many of those that liked the song the most. And many of those people fall into the American version of people this song satirizes.

      I would say that a lot of people who enjoyed this, but missed the message were probably also fans of the group LMFAO. While LMFAO were not afraid to poke fun at themselves, I believe they were genuine in promoting the posh and partying lifestyle. I mean one of them is Quincy Jones' nephew or some shit, so it's not like they ever had to figure out how the hell they were going to pay their light bill or rent. I think the majority of the people in the US took it the same way they took LMFAO.

    I remember the craze. I got into it also. Was fun.
    The other thing that made it popular was the 3 specific dance moves used. Everyone was trying to imitate them. And I'm sure the few billion views were from people watching it more than once. It was just a fun song. And I like them small bodied ladies you see in asian countries.
