As an '80s kid, I am excited to watch this. I was 13 when this aired. Michael Jackson ruled back then, and music was so amazing and creative. There was just a feeling in the air back then that you can't explain. There will never be anything like the '80s. I feel so sorry for the kids today; they will never know that amazing era. 🥰
In 85 you were 13 years old? Lol you are not an '80s kid you are a '70s one 😅
That feeling in the air is called youth and nostalgia. The 80's wasn't a special decade, you were just young. Everything seems better when you're young. I feel that way about the 2000's, my mum and dad feel that way about the 70's, my nan and grandad about the 50's.
70's, 80's and the 90's were Special Times!!!
Glad i was alive to experience the majority of those Decades!!!
Everything went to hell after the 2000's!!!
you put it into words perfectly!!!@@mintybadgerproductions
No, I am a 90's/00's kid...but when I look into 70's/80's pop culture...they were the best times...period.
Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, Harry Belafonte, and Quincy Jones, thank you for this masterpiece of a song, and the legacy that lives on with it.
What about all the others that made this become reality? Bruce Springsteen,Bob Dylan,Willie Nelson, etc.
It took more than just those people you mentioned. :}
@@xScooterAZx It was their idea which was inspired by Band Aid’s song 🙄
@@des8301 Yes,but they couldnt have done it without those people who agreed to do their part to make it come true.
Also what about the man who's idea it was to begin with? Bob Geldof.
@@des8301 This song came together following the impact of the UK supergroup Band Aid and their charity holiday song "Do They Know It's Christmas?"
@@xScooterAZx I know it did. The reason I mentioned those 4 is because they are the creators of this. Harry came up with the concept, Michael and Lionel wrote the song, and Quincy produced it.
I'm very moved Michael deserves to be recognized not only for what he did for the music industry but also for his humanitarianism
"I'm looking for a song that plays in this documentary. It starts at the second minute of the first hour of the documentary, and the song features a flute at the beginning."
and don't forget about diddling little boys
Amazing music documentary, fully exposes the prime genius of Michael Jackson and how humble he is in delivering this song. What's also exposed is the impeccable heart of Lionel Richie, Harry Belafonte, and Quincy Jones. Maybe seeing how Stevie Wonder was so important in resolving the Bob Dylan solo which is a highlight of the song. Hearing how Prince never showed up is also surprising. I will now listen to this song with new ears. I'm not sure if today's music artists could repeat this incredible feat of recording history. Certainly shows how in the 80's is was very different times.
They did try to replicate it with We are the World ‘25 or something. It wasn’t quite the same
Op. Cit. "The Greatest Night in the History of Pop" is simply not pop enough. This exciting story is presented dryly. You don't feel the 80s there. You don't feel the sweat, tears and blood shed during the preparation of the recording and then the recording itself. That's it partly a story about the war of star egos, which is reduced in a few shots to a note with the inscription: "We leave the ego at the door", which was hung on the studio door. And it's nice that the musicians actually did it, but the film could have raised further conflicts . And it's no small thing. There is one moment when Waylon Jennings decides to leave the studio while debating whether or not to sing a part of a song in Swahili. It happens suddenly and unexpectedly, and then the only return to the topic comes down to the memory that at the time the singer was at his best years were already behind him.
Similarly, Sheila E. drops a real bomb in one of her statements. The artist was invited to participate in the project only to attract Prince. When she realized it, she left. He talks about it and that's it. No one comments on it any more, there is no explanation. The show must go on, but in this case it should stop for a while. Nguyen simply has too many stories on his hands to string them together into a coherent whole and extract any emotional depth from them. And yet he tries, which results in him hitting the wrong notes again and again." Rafał Christ

When Stevie Wonder assisted Bob Dylan in remembering his own voice I stood up and had a standing ovation.
Prince did eventually donate a new song to the WATW album.

All the artists who contributed and took part here just verifies how amazing and special that era was.

MJ was a child abuser and that ruins it for me.
Then Cyndi Lauper came in and knocked it out of the park. Great song.
Michael...no stress no vocal issues..just absolutely amazing. The best best out of 40 stars..just seamless and brilliant 👏 👌 🙌
I can tell you as someone outside America, this might’ve been a “cavalcade of superstars” but we only knew Michael Jackson and this song was a success because of him.. those of us in the third world, we knew him not only for his music but his noble heart and he represented HOPE to us.. that there is still goodness in humanity. Thanks to the GOAT but his reaction to some of the artists that can't sing in tune is hilarious 😭😭😭
Out of context it's hilarious, but knowing who these talented pop artists are, it really dims their vocal ability when on their own songs. Cyndi Lauper and Huey Lewis sound great doing their songs.
To be fair (and for the record I'm a HUUUUGE MJ fan), Michael & Lionel wrote the thing over the days/weeks/longer leading up to the recording session, everyone else is learning it AT the midnight recording session.
They could sing. MJ already knew the song from back to front. They literally heard a skeleton version snd had to learn all their solos, duo's , harmonies etc in the moment.

In spite of the memes about this recording, this documentary is essential. Watching the vulnerability of Bob Dylanʼs own recognition that he can't be on par of those greats is heartwarming. How he supports himself on Stevie, and how he manages to pull it off even saying «that's not good enough» to the congratulations of everyone, which put a smile on his somber face is wonderful. And the documentary ends with his voice as the last sound. I've never been Bob Dylanʼs fan, but this makes me admire the guy.
Also Huey Lewis humbleness to realize he's fighting to get in tune. To admit he's filling shoes when he was not supposed to have a solo, and to admit that it's difficult for him to harmonize. Everything is great about this, and it may be putting the memes to rest.
When Dylan reached out to Stevie for support and Stevie reminds him the importance of his unique voice I stood up and had a standing ovation. We are simply not meant to be fighting each other as humans regardless of our cultures or background. We were meant to fight together to explore our world and the universe within and without.

Who knew Stevie Wonder almost ended the session early with his Swahili request😂
I felt kinda bad for Bob Dylan, he looked so awkward the entire night.
they did Sheila E. dirty ngl (never heard of her before though)
Bruce Springsteen has such a cool voice.
I was unfamiliar with how amazing Steve Perry’s voice was - need to listen to more Journey songs.
You could tell Dylan was nervous and afraid to be himself. He was a folk singer who was with a bunch of young pop stars. It was very sweet to see him confide in Stevie and allow Stevie to help him. I think Dylan was surprised that they all wanted him to sing like himself. When Stevie imitated him, it shocked BD that an R&B singer knew his sound and really knew his music. It was a highlight for me at the end of the credits to hear BD finish the song.
Sheila E was one of Prince’s protégées. Her success was ultimately short-lived, but she was and is very talented.
@@TBAGTX I was initially mad at Stevie for almost derailed the whole damn thing with the Swahili request. (Which could be added in post, but shouldn't happen on the spot unless details are already ironed out.) But I loved how he helped the whole cast by rehearsing them at the piano. And when he helped Bob basically...sing like Bob...I was reminded that his last name is Wonder for a reason. It's a 'wonder' that one sole person can have all these musical gifts.

I really respect Bob Dylan for hanging in there and getting it done. He's a vocal stylist rather than a singer, and he had to feel self conscience about his vocals and out of place, but he he did what it took to get it done.
Dylan showed incredible vulnerability in this. It made more sense then why Prince declined to participate. He likely would have been the same way. The both of them happen to be Geminis.
I loved how he asked Stevie for help!
I will remember his part more than the others because he tapped into an ancient teaching in a time of crisis. The teaching says, " Ask for help not because you are weak but because you want to remain strong."

@@angrykermit3192 Dionne Warwick certainly knew - Whitney is her niece
@@CelebrityClassifeddidn't prince say no?
This is greatness that no other generation will ever be able to match. So blessed to have witnessed and to understand they paved the way for so many others. Never to be forgotten.
The 60's would like a word with you
@@greggmccort7096Well, yeah. That’s a given.
"I'm looking for a song that plays in this documentary. It starts at the second minute of the first hour of the documentary, and the song features a flute at the beginning."
I remember this, Band Aid as well. Life was so much better back in the 80s.
I miss the 80s music ❤
"I'm looking for a song that plays in this documentary. It starts at the second minute of the first hour of the documentary, and the song features a flute at the beginning."
Para mí la mejor época musical
Now this is the content we like to see! Looking forward to this. Netflix please do more Michael Jackson documentaries in the future.
Yeah exposing that he was a self harming black man & very likely a pedoph1le
Showtime just did a documentary on the making and impact of the Michael Jackson Thriller album called Thriller 40.
@@RocStarr913 Yes I watched that on Paramount+. Overall it was ok, liked the unseen footage etc but the storytelling was not as good. This was way better.
Appreciate it soo muchh! Sadly we have to do this 15 years after the King of Pop passed away😢
"I'm looking for a song that plays in this documentary. It starts at the second minute of the first hour of the documentary, and the song features a flute at the beginning."
Still in shock and have goosebumps cause of this "‘The Greatest Night In Pop’ Netflix documentary, 2 hours since the news broke. 😂
New footage of Michael Jackson. 😭 🙏
This is the greatest song ever in my opinion and i love Steve Perrys part.
Michael Jackson ❤
Michael Jackson!!!!
MICHAELLLL!!!!!!!!
I was ten when this aired. The 80's are the amazing era!
"I'm looking for a song that plays in this documentary. It starts at the second minute of the first hour of the documentary, and the song features a flute at the beginning."
We’re finally getting a documentary about one of my favorite humanitarian songs! I have this song on multiple playlists! I’m excited and can’t wait to see this!😁
Wow, just watched the Netflix documentary! haven’t listened to this song in so long. Forgotten how beautiful this gem of a song was and still is. Instantly took me back to my childhood. Still feels just as magical ✨
SO excited for this! Cannot wait to see more Michael… ❤️
Long Live The King Of Pop!!!
After watching this documentary and loved Michael Jackson even more. His dedication to this project was unmatched along with Lionel and Quincy.
So glad to see all the comments recognizing MJ.
After Geldof started the entire thing with the Band Aid song in the UK, seeing the US follow suit and do their own thing as well was great to see.
....although when Geldof came to the recording session and saw all the food from it being catered he hit the roof :D
Credit should be given to Michael Buerk’s reporting of the Ethiopian famine
@@robertphelps1574 I remember watching David Bowie (I believe?) introduce the news clip during Live Aid that was the spark for Geldof to create Band Aid and kick the whole thing off.
I remember as a kid it crushing me, and seeing people in the crowd weeping has stuck with me ever since.
band aid song sucks! fyi, first ever charity concert, concert for bangladesh, was held in madison square garden, ny in 1971
The food was all donated though.
The greatest Era in music ever.
Nothing like this ever again.
Sad really, music will never be as good like this again
true! they were able to pull it off based on the fact that everyone in the room had PURE talent. No auto-tune or elaborate production was required. This couldn't happen today.... all the greats are long gone.
Quincy jones its a priviliged human being. No one else can say i directed the cream of pop, jazz, rock country, From michael jackson, to bob dylan, ray charles, billy joel, to name some of them. Thannks for ever..
We'll never see a man with that much musical experience ever again in such a position in our lifetime
This 8O's kid still has the cassette of this song. Love this.
Can’t wait for this. It gets to the heart of who Michael Jackson was - an artist and humanitarian
Amazing collection of talent that will never be duplicated ever again.
It was a once in a lifetime thing you'll never see this many stars together all at once, our children and grandchildren will never see so many stars come together for a song
I cried after watching this film.
So much talent on this project. My personal highlights:
MJ and Steve Perry....wow.
Love Huey Lewis and Bob Dylan's humility.
Quincy Jones is freaking legend.
Bruce pulling up in a GTO is so awesomely American.
Paul Simon: "If a bomb goes off, John Denver will be back on top." Hahaha
I thought the same of Huey, he came across as so sweet and easy going! I was a big fan of him and his band in the mid 80s.
This brings back so many memories! I remember one night, all the kids in my neighborhood (including myself)all got together to sing this song. However, it became quite a challenge because, every young girl that night wanted to do the Cyndi Lauper part.Boy, do I recall some of the arguments and hair pulling that night! 🤦🏾♂️🤣🤣🤣
What a time to be a kid in Chicago!
Thank you for this iconic song Michael Jackson WE LOVE YOU AND WE MISS YOU
One of the best documentaries for sure. Still remember watching We are the world mv in 85 with tiny TV we had back then. wow. Loved every minute of this, and when Cyndi lauper nailed the part and Stevie Wonder helped guiding Bob Dylan's part omg.
We need more MJ stuff ❤❤
Showtime just did a documentary about the making and the impact of the Thriller album called Thriller 40.
Would've been AMAZING if we have had Madonna, Prince and Whitney on the song as well 💓
And Chaka Khan!!!
Whitney Houston wasn’t popular yet at all during this time. Madonna was likely not considered a great vocalist back then, and Prince pretty much likely felt uncomfortable being around being such so many big people.
@@RocStarr913 Well, they were trying to get Madonna.
I'll be watching.. I hope they don't down play Michael Jacksons part in creating the song. We've heard MJ's original demo.
It didn’t. It’s clear Jackson was responsible for most of the song.
They didn't. Lionel made sure to make it clear that Michael was a big part of it.
The talent on that room recording the song that night is just mind blowing.
MJ was on another level. Wrote the entire song and did everything in one take
It wasn’t exactly in one take, but the speed of this song compared to how much he would fuss and tinker with songs shows he was a truly natural talent.
I thought he cowrote it with Lional Richie.
@@guyinsf Technically true, but it seems like Jackson wrote the lion’s share of it.
@@RocStarr913 Ok thanks! Good to know that.
This is the best thing on Netflix this year!
This song is needed today. I remember when it was played all over the world at the same time.❤
I watched this the other night. As I sat watching this, I thought to myself.
How can the people of this great country, go from caring this much about the children of the world, to becoming, people who hate immigrants, who scream and yell and even attack each other.
The words in this song, are the people we need to be again AMERICA!
The HATE has to STOP.
LOVE and LAUGHTER makes LIFE GREAT for EVERYONE ❤️
Thank you for making such a powerful song.
The 80's Rocked!
Because this was show business, not the country at large, and the economy was largely great then for the country at large. The country at large has changed very drastically and everything is a lot more precarious for everyone.
Just watch this and it brought a tear to my eye. Such great and legendary artists. We had great songwriters, producers and artist when I was growing up. The 80's...
