  • This video provides a basic description of the room & pillar mining method for extracting coal underground. It includes an explanation of the different products working together in a room & pillar operation (continuous miner, face hauler, scoop, LHD vehicles, feeder breaker, roof bolter).

    What’s the highest and longest tunnel this machine has built?

    • @mottthehoople693
      @mottthehoople693 Před 2 měsíci +1

      the length of a panel is relevant on the size of the lease and the costs involved in supporting and ventilating the mine. Your question is akin to how long is a piece of string....

    • @madaxe79
      @madaxe79 Před měsícem

      They don’t build tunnels, although they could. A continuous miner mines coal, either in board and pillar mining, or in development for longwall mining. Some mines have hundreds of kilometres of underground roadways, as well as the mining panels themselves.
      In development a single miner can easily develop 50-60 metres per shift, but the challenge is maintaining a sequence of mining, coal clearance, and strata support (bolting). It’s easy enough to mine it, but you’re limited to roof support. I hope that helps.

    Where is the water coming from ? On board tanks or direct lines?

    • @stevesimpson2819
      @stevesimpson2819 Před 3 lety +1

      They have water pumps installed at the mine that feed the machines, usually with an 1-1/2" hose. Mines tend to have plenty of water in them. The bigger challenge is keeping the mine dry.

    • @imanenigma3348
      @imanenigma3348 Před 2 lety +1

      Fireline.
      Water pipes that are advanced with mine progress.
      Manifolds are in place along the line so you can tap into it
      when a supply of water is needed.
      You also have a pump out line for waste or excess face water to be returned to the surface dams.
      The cycle begins again.
      Steve is right. We need water to cut and supress dust but excess water from the mining process
      and water coming out of the face can be a real pain to get back to the surface.
      Can make an unpleasant workplace, a very unpleasant workplace! :-)

    Wouldn't driving bolts into the roof make it less stable? You're opening cracks into the roof, after all...

    • @astral3329
      @astral3329 Před 2 lety +1

      They are glued in place, helps to keep the whole structure stable but yes the roof top can fall during the bolting

    • @imushavem7504
      @imushavem7504 Před 2 lety +3

      The bolt hole are drilled first and plates to help distribute the weight. Most bolts use some form of resin that is heat activated. Drilling them in generates enough heat to active it. One danger is with bad top (like sediment layered) which has thin layers that can break between bolts. Some of those can be as sharp as knifes with weight behind it as it falls.

      The cost to cut the rock is too much for profit. The height of the mine is determined by the height of the coal seam. All coal that leaves a deep mine must be run thru a wash plant to separate the rock from the coal. The less rock that's cut the cheaper it is to run the plant. It's all about cost. Some top is white sandstone and they would be replacing miner bits continuously for more profit loss. Low coal mines are somewhere between 42 inches high. And some rock does have to be taken to work it. The only limit to the minimum height is the height of the continuous miner.
