This comments section makes me so happy, I’m happy her work is finally being appreciated more. I always loved Girls and it was so frustrating how misunderstood it was. People just assumed she was a literal parallel with her character and thought there was no self-awareness to making fun of negative qualities
Exactly!!! Like she’s self deprecating not to be annoying or whiny but that’s how she truly thought of herself. So many young women and men could relate to that, esp in their 20s
It was interesting that she played Hannah so well and wrote so brilliantly in the show that people thought and complained about her actions in the show. Also the sexism and body shaming towards her while the show was on the air. Plus all the stories people made up about her and her sister, that was awful to see and the hate on her is still strong on twitter. I adore her and think she is so talented and funny and genuine. She has been through a lot and I'm glad she is happy now!

I had endometriosis and a complete hysterectomy at 29. I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia at 40. I’m 62 now and live in chronic pain. I’m thankful to be here.

@David’s Mom That's something I'm going to look into, as a chronic pain patient! I took it recreationally awhile back, it was PHENOMENAL. Nothing that I'd care to abuse, if it worked it would be an excellent tool.

I've watched Girls all the way through 3 times, she is a great writer and people who have never seen it & only see her public persona fail to realize how talented she is. AMAZING SHOW!

You think 'Girls' was well written? The conversations between characters in that show always struck me as feeling contrived. They sounded little like real people talk but rather like someone's notion of what clever discourse ought to be. Simply said, the dialogue sounded written. I never bought any of it. Plus the show itself was inane.
My husband also has Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. He lives with chronic pain and other health issues due to this genetic defect in the makeup of connective tissue. Good to see someone in the public realm shine a light on EDS.
I also appreciate how she’s spoken up and out about having Endometriosis, AND that she has donated a great deal of her time and money to fund Endometriosis research. I have lived with this incurable disease since the age of 12. I can no longer work because I’m in debilitating pain more often than not.

Whew. I am 33, nearly 34. I have Ehler’s Danlos as well. I am on the verge of having a hysterectomy due to uterine fibroids. I work in the entertainment industry, and I have battled illness stigma for years. Thank you, Drew and Lena, for telling this story and bringing awareness. We aren’t broken. We survive. We thrive.
Amy I had a hysterectomy at 34 after years of complications due to endometriosis and adenomyosis. I feel it saved my life. I also work in the biz and totally get it. Wishing you great recovery and more beautiful life on the other side of your treatment.

Same, I have Ehler's Danlos Syndrome, have endometriosis, and had a hysterectomy due to uterine fibroids too. It's a lot of pain to deal with and also not well known (EDS that is) and I appreciate anyone bringing light to this syndrome.

Thats all she ever does. For years she claimed she was totally transparent which of course was a lie being she was a drug addict since she was 20 that she only admitted after her show was done. she had a platform and chose to use it to be naked and blah blah about being fat when she could have actually been honest that she was completely addicted to meds. I have endo, doctors tell you a hysterectomy does NOT improve the condition. She demanded a hysterectomy and then wrote about it, like that's the real reason she did it.

Girls was one of the only shows I would active seek out because it was so good. I have the attention of a squirrel but managed to stay interested in the storylines and scenes of the shows because~excellent | exceptional A N D despite being older than the cast | story, by more than a few years, I really loved and enjoyed the writing, the acting, the all of it.

Drew really did show her strength as a young person in so many different ways. First, as an actor, and also as a child of a feckless mother who wasn’t caring for her. Then she went on to recover herself from partying and stay acting. It’s a lot for a person to take on, and she did it. I find it inspiring. I also vividly remember she would talk about her mother but wasn’t bitter sounding. Way better than I could do. ❤
I knew she would end up saying an autoimmune issue. I hope you will keep looking into the massive realm of health issues for women, due to autoimmune health issues. Food is the number 1 healer for us. It is also the number 1 reason, we women do not heal. Thank you Drew for your human to human kindness.
Grateful Endo is being discussed! Lena and I had the same doc and the same surgeries.
I agree, we live in a culture that devalues our fight- looking down at us as 'sickly' rather than badass warriors taking charge of our illness!!! Even in my rest days, I know it's just a part of my daily choice to keep going.

I don't generally watch the show Girls, but I think it was a very funny show and I think Lena Dunham is a very skilled writer, dirdctor and actress. She should make more sitcoms like Girls.

When do you feel beautiful is such a weird question for me as a man to hear because that’s kind of self reassurance doesn’t figure into my world at all on any level. I never feel beautiful and never really need to. Anyway, what the hell do I know about it?
I’m a woman and I feel the same way. It’s a ridiculous self-involved question or even concept. I need to feel productive I need to feel like I’m taking care of my family I need to feel like a learning contributing human being. Wanting or needing to feel beautiful is so foreign to me.

I wish Drew and everyone would know the work of doctor Peter Levine and doctor Ruden's self Havening. I do suffer from autoimmune conditions too since always but diagnosed in 2003. My life has changed a lot since I started working on myself with these two doctors' approaches. :)

This went viral on Tiktok and it's not looking pretty
I’m on the second season of Girls now… first season had some great moments but good lord. What a gimmicky, contrived, tone deaf, pandering, self-indulgent piece of garbage. Between the token black guy, gratuitous nudity ( “I’m conventionally unattractive but look how much I don’t care! Feminism!”) and she has literally said the character is based on her so don’t give me that. The episode where she follows the older handsome guy home who somehow is attracted to her and they jump around naked all day… just terrible writing on so many levels. I’ve never understood all the hate until now.
I’ve understood the hate. And it’s because of all the stuff you just said and more. She’s gross. I feel bad for her health challenges as a human, but as an artist or entertainer she is just gross.
