The custom van craze of the 70’s was a nationwide fad that quickly swept the United States, but went the way of disco by the end of the decade. As with many 70’s trends, a lot of street vans were of…questionable taste by today’s standards, but they had plenty of visual impact. Raked suspensions with fat, white letter tires on deep dish chrome wheels, big side pipes, scoops, flares, roll pans, spoilers, bubbled plexiglass windows, CB radios, and lush custom upholstery with mounds of deep-pile shag carpeting were all preferred accessories of the vanner set. Plus, the large slab-sided van body panels provided ample canvas for all kinds of custom paint tricks and intricate airbrush murals.

Removable roof reveals completely furnished interior.
Full custom interior with captain’s chairs, bed, CB radio, refrigerator/TV unit.

The Chevrolet Van (also known as the Chevrolet/GMC G-series vans and GMC Vandura) is a range of vans that was manufactured by General Motors from the 1964 to 1995 model years. Introduced as the successor for the rear-engine Corvair Corvan/Greenbrier, the model line also replaced the panel van configuration of the Chevrolet Suburban. The model line was sold in passenger van and cargo van configurations as well as a cutaway van chassis that served as the basis for a variety of custom applications.
Produced across three generations, the model line was sold under a wide variety of model names under both the Chevrolet and GMC brands. Initially sold as a forward control vehicle (with the engine placed between the seats), the third generation had a conventional layout (placing the engine forward of the driver); the second and third-generation series shared powertrain commonality with the C/K pickup truck model line.
In April 1970,[citation needed] GM introduced the third-generation G-series vans as 1971 model-year vehicles. In a complete redesign of the model line, the vans adopted a front-engine configuration (adding a hood to the body[1]). While using a unibody chassis, the third-generation vans derived mechanical components from the second- and third-generation C/K pickup trucks.
In production for 25 years, the third-generation G-series vans became one of the longest-produced vehicle platforms designed by General Motors.
Similar in appearance to the European Bedford CF (introduced by GM subsidiary Vauxhall in 1969), the G-series vans differed from one another in divisional badging. Alongside fender badging, Chevrolet badging was centered within the grille while GMC lettering was placed on the hood above the grille. In contrast to the "Action-Line" pickup trucks, the vans are fitted with a horizontal-slat grille. Sharing mechanical commonality with the "Action-Line" pickup trucks, the steering column was sourced from the 1969 update of the C/K series; a large engine cover required a separate design for the dashboard.
For 1973, a minor revision changed the color of the Chevrolet "bowtie" emblem from blue to gold; the steering column and dashboard were updated (to more closely match the introduction of the "Rounded-Line" C/K pickup trucks).
For 1976, the rear bench seats were redesigned in passenger vans, allowing them to be removed without tools.
Offered on a longer wheelbase, a cutaway-chassis conversion of the G-series was marketed through Chevrolet and GMC as a cargo truck, as the Hi-Cube Van and MagnaVan, respectively. - Auta a dopravní prostředky
I was a kid during the “vanning” craze. I once attended a van show with my old man.
To this day I remember just how crazy guys got customizing their vans!
This brings back memories! Great build.
This looks incredible, I love that the top comes off and you can see the details inside.
My buddy who lived across the street had him one of these, never finished it though. Back in mid to late seventies vans were everywhere. In fact there was a guy who lived in the area and if anyone had a van he probably painted it, murals, graphics, metal flake and all, Same with the hot rods and muscle cars, in fact he did a pretty nice flame job on my 1972 Vega GT.
love all ur vids watching everyday, after 30 yrs in back at it again 👍👍👍
I want to say Thank You. Because of watching your videos, you’ve given me ideas on how I could paint and detail my model builds.
Glad to hear it!
That is one of his best models. Love it!!
I remember building and sometimes modifying these kits in my teenage years... One day we had a birthday party for my brother and his friends got into our bedroom and got a hold of my kits... DESTROYED a few models and broke my heart... I loved my builds...out of 4 broken kits I made my own design build.... Came out awesome...!!!!! Those where the fun days...!!!!
Gas, grass or a$$ nobody rides for free lol, I sure loved the 70's !!
Keep on truckin
LOL, yes that was the saying. I still use it today.😎
Hang in there..baby!
Back then the grass was crap, holds true today with the price of all three. 🥖💥
@@garyslentzii2796 so true Gary lol
Nice Shaggin' Wagon!!!
We called it a Stabbin Cabin !!
@@Cimmerian415 Even better!!
Thanks!
I remember going to Van shows when I was a kid in the 70s. ...I gave a girl a ride in my wagon... this one really takes me back!!! Very nice!!!
Thanks man!
@@hpiguy also have to say that I think the tv screen looked better the way you had it before adding the decal, you made it look more realistic with the silver screen.
Looks like a modified reissue of the Hardy Boys van from the late ‘70’s. Very cool. Might have to pick one of these up . Nice job as always . Really like how you achieved the color on the interior parts. 👍🏻😀
Please do!
This van was also used in the Charlie's Angel's kit.
@Jere, that is exactly what i was thinking! I had the Hardy Boys Chevy Van kit as a kid in the 70's and I a lot of what Chris showed makes me think it is the same kit. I had another version of it too but I can't remember what it was.
That was originally the 1976 Car Craft Magazine California Cruiser project van kit! I think I painted mine light blue instead of yellow. I think I still have the decal sheet too!
I just bought this kit! Cannot wait to build it.
“I gave a girl, a ride in the wagon, she crawled in and took control “! Haha, that’s the first thing I thought about is that song “Chevy Van”, Sammy Johns! Looking good buddy! I’m diggin it!
Yup!
Need to rewatch The Van!
@@hpiguy - haha, right on bud, right on!
@@hpiguy yep, I remember that movie. The Van was a Dodge "Maxi-van", had that huge round side window, and called Straight Arrow!!!
I love that tune
@@hpiguy - I think I remember that movie, that’s been a while back hasn’t it? Hmmm.. gonna have to look it up and watch it too!
Received mine at just about the time your video aired.
Great job - just like the vans I used to see all the time.
That's a sharp looking van, I had a revell plastic model of this Chevy Van that I bought and put together back 19 years ago, I just put it together without painting it and it didn't have the white lettered pad printed tires like this does, as always great build😊😊👍👍
Right on!
Looks fantastic !!! Awesome job ! Congratulations ! 😉👍
Thank you! Cheers!
LOOKING AWESOME I REMEMBER THEM VAN BACK IN THE DAY
Thanks man!
O wow that's so freaking awesome love the color works really well with the decals and the inside is top drawer well done love it have to get that one thanks for sharing buddy
Awesome job, and much appreciate you sharing! I have not built a model since I was 11 years old... I have not kept up nor looked into the history of the companies much, but glad to see some moulds being retooled and kits reproduced, despite the fact these now cost 3-4x the price I remember.
I will admit I never really gave vans much more then just a quick turn of the eye... But for some reason am really giving these wonders of the 70s/80s another look. I do have projects in mind... And infact am here from what started with a Tonka flavour of a van like this. It was not until I really dove into that project, that I realised how offscale the proportions were... And then this came... Perfect! Looks like my aluminium chassis might mate up great with this.
I really love the details too, esp that CB radio vive with all those aerials and whips. I've always wanted to marry R/C and models when I was younger, but did not have the funds of course. Now is the time.
There was a lot of love people have for the hippie bus, but this is way past cool then the VW in my mind tehehe. I'm almost tempted to buy and deck up a real one... Trucks are all the rage these days, (I have a 2014 Silverado now all decked up in my garage)... But just don't see these much. These are before my time... But my mind can only wonder what it must of been like, being a 20 something year old back then!
I have a 2014 Silverado too. Have you had problems with the A/C? The Compressor went out in mine at 75k then a year later the evaperater sprung a leak. Thank goodness it was under warntey only cost me a couple hundred to have it all fixed. Other than that I have had no issues with mine.
Always outstanding. Cannot wait to see the next build.👍
Thanks 👍
Sweet build! What hooked me was the removable top, going to get me some!
Remember.....no parking on the dance floor!!!
Right on!
Super groovy build Chris. Got to get a few.
Thanks man!
Great build. Love your work with the interior.
Thanks man!
Great build! I've been waiting for this detailed van to come out for a while with the removable roof.
Thanks man!
As a Chevy boogie van owner I love this ! I have the older version of this actual kit and will build it one day 😜
Buy an build this one and save the vintage one 😊
Turned out great
Thanks man!
Very nice, remember all these vans from the era, like the color too, good choice. 😎
Thanks man!
I love the color you used. This is a great kit. I built the previous release of this and noticed on this re-release they printed the lettering on the tires and included decals for the gauges, TV, wood trim and the side markers. Good subtle improvements.
Thanks!
Oh man!! That van came out GROOVY! Awesome job Chris!!👍✌️
Thanks 👍
Awesome van it brings back the 70s and it triggers memories of the A team van
Yes!
i built 2 of this van many years ago
this one is a repop of the old ones but different decals
i enjoy the van kits, im gonna have to pick up a few of this one to build customs
Far out! Very cool build.
Beautiful build Chris, period perfect! Lots of custom vans and street rod had this very same color!! Killer interior also!
Thanks man!
Great review and build. Thanks. Looks like a great kit.peace
Thanks for watching!
Oh yes put a factory bumper on the front some cragars painted a beautiful dark red and that would look just like my actual 1976 Chevy van that I've owned since I was 16 years old mid 1985 awesome build
Too cool I built this model van kit as a young man back in the mid70s think the body was molded in root beer color I built a lot of model kits back then it taught me patients grew up loving trucks cars and vans still build them every once in a while. Great job on the build
Thanks, enjoy!
The van looks awesome! Really like the colors you chose.
Thanks so much!
This one is nice.. need to grab it!!!
Thanks man!
Great job on this Chris
Thanks for stopping by!
Awesome job as ALWAYS! Had this kit back in the late 70’s when it was released as the Hardy Boys Van :)
Very cool kit ! Thanks again.
Thanks!
I really like that color.
Thanks!
Cool build
Thanks!
Beautiful work, thanks for these videos I'll be using what Ive seen here on the 1974 Torino I have sitting in my den.
Thanks, enjoy!
Just got mine today, yours looks great Chris. KUTGW buddy.
Enjoy it!
Kraco radio LMAO!😂. Can't forget the Cal -Custom barefoot pedal! Those were the days when you could customize anything with wheels!
Beautiful work, Chris! I never gave much thought to the scale vans until I saw yours. I may just have to try one!!
You should!
Cool stuff
Thanks man!
awesome van.
lol.
the re issues are so cool.
They are!
Wow I got to get me one of them kits. We are going back to the 70s lol. Another great job on the video. Have a great weekend.
Thanks, you too!
Nice job on the van dude.
As always.
Thanks man!
Cool kit
Thanks!
Nice job
Thanks!
This is a straight up reissue of the Car Craft California Cruiser kit from 1976, but with new art/decals.
The kit's been reissued multiple times over the years, including a The Hardy Boys TV show kit with some different interior panels.
I inspected one of the kits I got for inventory and the chrome tree was showing it's age, a lot of flash on the wheels and steering wheel.
The only thing I don't care for is it comes in a much larger box than your typical model kit, which means to ship one to someone calls for a larger box and thus more weight.
You can improve the interior by adding styrene upper interior panels. A real van they would go all the way to the roof line to cover the internal braces.
Not the kind that goes in the back...LOL Caught that and laughed out oud !
LOL
That thing is Hot! Gosh i love custom vans! Nice job Sir!
You and me both!
Wooooow increíble trabajo, cada vez mejor me encantan tus videos, saludos cordiales desde Argentina
Gracias!
Great build. Nice touches on the small details. Great idea to tone down the rims and pipes shine with the clear. Bravo!
Thanks for stopping by!
@@hpiguy You're welcome. I seen the videos on your channel. Gonna check them out and also subbed.
Love these vans
Thanks man!
Now that’s a 1970’s custom van colour , great build Chris
Thanks Ian!
Loved the ‘What is this, velvet?’ Bit Chris. Van looks great.
Yes! Thank you!
Aww sweet!this kit has Colorado license plates decals!.I am a proud Colorado native,I'm the only one out of four brothers born here. The fact that some of the AMT big rig kits by AMT such as the White Road Boss,White Western Star, and Daimond Reo truck kits come with Colorado license plates decals,is why I plan on buying those 3 truck kits;build them & use the Colorado license plates as I live in Colorado and am a Colorado native. There are are custom tire sets by AMT;and tires that you can use that were left over from other 2 n'1 & 3 n'1 van kits that are molded as one solid piece, instead of two pieces.I personally would use a set of custom tires; from AMT on this van as AMT tire sets are fully branded, unlike the tires that comes in most Revell Germany/Revell U.S.A automotive kits;like the slogan says: Whatever you drive, drive a Firestone™.
Very cool
Thanks man!
Super cool build we didn’t have big vans like that here in Australia we had what you call a sedan delivery
Thanks man!
Awesome looking van bro
Thanks 👍
After watching your channel for 4 months, it finally sunk in that you’re a southpaw! Great build, pretty awesome dude!
Thank you!
This model is "Neetto" as the would say in the 70s.. outstanding video and presentation.
Thanks man!
JUST seen this kit at the Hobby Shop this afternoon !! 🤘🏻✌🤙
Enjoy!
I love your build. That's a good lookin van! Thanks for your groovy build. I have old issues of Vannin' from the 70s. Doesn't appear to be a waterbed tho...must have spent the money on fender flares and sidepipes instead.
Super cool build man!
Thanks man!
Built that kit want a when I was 11 or 12 years. It was a Charlie ´s Angels kit moulded in pink and black no chrome. The decals was the Charlie ´s Angel logo.Later I change the colour roof white, body blue and white rims also white. It was over 40 years
Kewl!!
Sometimes I forget that I have 20+ years of life on you.
Those were lyrics from a song back in the 70s that I said in previous comment.
Wanted to be sure you knew that.
I do like the model
Yup, well aware of the song and the movies.
I'm kinda surprised you leave a lot of parts on the trees to paint. I had to do my own white letter on the tires and make my own washes. Never would have thought of using a sharpie! That's so cool! I also used to use an old wash cloth for carpet, now you can buy the stuff for it! Great job on this! My down fall was always the paint job.
My favorite vans
Thanks man!
I had a Chevy model around 76 and I turned mine into 4x4 .Now back then I never seen a 4x4 Van but I thought it was cool. And I even put tractor axles under a pickup truck model with tractor trailer tires and thought it was stupid but cool ,to think years later I found out that's how Bigfoot started. Models were so cool because you could do different things with them and use your imagination. Love how you play the role. LOL.,star dust...maybe snow 🤫 Nice job.
Thanks man!
TOTALLY VANTASTIC dude love it im a big van nerd i like the 70's van trip especially the chevy vans and especially this particular one my hands and patience unfortunately wouldn't handle doing this skill of one man now im jealous this would go good next to my 74 ford econoline but great 🎥 and after seeing it i am now a subscriber
Glad you enjoyed it!
Built the last reissue of this kit in 2006. I must say I prefer the decals offered in this new release, although I made good use of the ones that came in mine on two different kits. Love this Root Beer color; interestingly enough, Right on Replicas put up a 69 Chevelle in this same color yesterday.
Great build. Brings back memories. With a little bit of work you could turn this into the A team van. I like the root beer color.
Thanks man!
AMT made an A-Team van kit. Complete with B.A. Baracus figure.
With all the other vehicles on the box art we could be in for a "vandemic" . Cool kit and awesome build, thanks
LOL, nice!
Fine job on the van!!! Nice to see these kits with full interiors, adds to the fun and realism of the kit. Keep up the good work!
Thanks, will do!
It's got everything but a Disco ball!
@Level 5 and the only thing that's missing,is music by the Bee Gees playing;while the disco ball is lit up and rotating:
stayin' alive,stayin' alive
Ah,ha,ha,ha
Stayin' alive,stayin' alive
Ah,ha,ha,ha
Stayin' alive🎵🎶
It does!
Moovin groovin
Thanks man!
Love a good custom van!!! ☮ ✌ 👍
I do too!
@@hpiguy 👍
Excelente !!

Thanks man!
That’s really cool ! Ready for cruising van fest wish my hands were steady to do window trim hate to ruin a paint job
Thanks!
Love how you use Rust-Oleum. When I was a kid in the 80s and model kits were 6 bucks I couldn't afford the testors paint or much else so I would buy Rust-Oleum at the hardware store and spray everything like you do, then when I needed to brush I'd spray it in the cap and brush it on. Used to go to school with different color hands all the time. Now I. Build real cars but use a spray gun 🤣
Thanks!
I am so glad this video came out today, I have had such a $hïttÿ day (pardon my French), this video is what I really needed today, thank you Chris for making such amazing videos that make my days better
Glad I can help!
Man I love that model kit. I would throw the direction sheet straight in the trash and build it Mad Max style though!
As long as you have fun!
Oh yeah, the Chevy Van.... Need I say more.😀
Thanks man!
Cool kit! Since the roof is removable, I could see making a custom raiseable camper top like the older VW Westfalia camper vans.
Enjoy!
Amazing work bro! By the way, you sound like Danny Koker.
Man, you have that thing lookin mean!! Great vid. I think my favorite van is the one Annie Potts drove in Corvette Summer.
Right on!
"Vanessa"
The old Monogram Hot Rod kits used to have those same style two piece tires. That's where I remember them from.
Great build Chris love the color choices now all they need is to come out with a Dodge van and you have all the big three 👍👍
You bet!
Super Like!...
Thank you! Cheers!
Another nice model build. It's been a long time but I remember those two piece tires. I had several Revell models come with those back when I was a kid. A 57 Chevy and 56 Ford pickup to be exact. Both date to before Revell merged with Monogram and makes me wonder if this model has a similar history.
Thanks man!
Nice to see molded in USA, looks like they simplified the kit a little. Bone heads went thru the trouble of tampo printing the tires, but they are the ones that have given modelers fits for years. And how about some photo etched parts. Regardless, another great review, I will scoop a few of these up.
We called those bumperettes Nerf bars. No idea why. This guy went to the 50's for his inspiration for the bumpers. They used those Nerf bars on tons of model Ts and As.
You gotta love hotrodders, they just keep adapting the coolness!
Might be cool to find a highly detailed engine and substitute it,and neatly cut away the doghouse so it's removable like the roof! Neat custom idea.
Thanks for the build,Chris. I have the original '76 Car Craft/ California Dreamin' Custom Chevy Van molded in yellow. Always loved this kit, but hated those crappy wheels. Looks like they would have upgraded those.
I love the bullet hole wheels, but if this was not a review and I was building it on my own I'd have chosen some one piece tires.
@@hpiguy correction, I meant to say crappy tires.
They were Crager Mach 8 wheels. Really popular truck wheels in the late 70s.
Another cracking video Chris. On the box art, that yellow van, is it a Ford Econoline (I'm not an expert on all the models). Smell the Brut! You are defo a child of the 70s 😆 What I like the best on your builds is, you use aerosol paints. When I started building kits again these past couple of years, it seemed like a no brainer but couldn't see many ppl doing it. They were just banging on how you hv to use an airbrush, so I gave that a go and can do it but what a faff cleaning it out all the time 😑 For cars, trucks and planes (primer and base colours) aerosols are so much easier esp if you do batch painting. Anyway, ramble over, thanks for all these vids which send me off hunting for them over here in Europe 😋
Thanks for watching and whatever you do, just enjoy your hobby your way.
I have 3 vans similar to that one
From over 20-30 years ago
And 2 more SS 340 2 door bad ass cars
