    HUK REBELLION - Timeline
In 1565 - 1898 - Spain colonization of the islands that now comprise the Philippines; Spanish authorities set up encomiendas, where the native population is forced to work as slave labor in vast tracts of agricultural lands called haciendas that Spain had granted to Spanish settlers; many rural encomiendas are held by the powerful Spanish Catholic orders
1800s - A small native upper and middle class had emerged (low-level public officlas, professionals, and a few landowners)
1898 - Spain cedes the Philippines to the United States; U.S. authorities retain the Spanish-era stratified society of a few rich and masses of poor, with the Filipino upper and middle classes occupying positions of authority previously held by the Spanish colonials; the friar estates are seized and sold, with these lands bought by wealthy Filipino landowners, and not by the masses of landless tenants and peasants who worked these lands; U.S. authorities also work to transfer government powers in a future independent Philippines to the wealthy and landowning classes - thus, the few landowning, wealthy Filipinos also gain political power
1930 - Founding of the Communist Party of the Philippines or PKP, which U.S. authorities outlaw
1930s - Rise of fascist regimes in Europe and Japan compel democratic Western powers and socialist Soviet Union to form an alliance to confront fascism; in the Philippines, local communist leaders form an alliance with U.S. authorities to confront Japanese expansionism
December 1941 - World War II breaks out in the Asia-Pacific and Japan invades and occupies the Philippines and all of Southeast Asia; many local (anti-Japanese) guerilla militias are formed across the archipelago, one of which is organized by PKP communists who operate in Central Luzon and are called “Huks”
September 1945 - World War II ends in the Asia-Pacific and U.S. forces return to the Philippines; all guerilla militas, including the Huks, are forced to disarm
July 4, 1946 - The Philippines gains its independence from the United States
1946 - In Philippine general elections, PKP communists under a political party win congressional seats in Central Luzon but are barred from taking office
August 1946 - The Huks restart their rebellion, this time against the Philippine government
April 1948 - The government and Huks sign a ceasefire, which soon breaks down and a resumption of hostilities, leading to the most intense phase of the war
1950 - The peak of Huk strength, where the rebels prepare to overthrow the government; this is foiled when in October 1950, government forces capture high-ranking PKP leaders; the Huks continue to be a dangerous threat
1950 - 1954 - With considerable U.S. military assistance and a restructuring of the Philippine military, government forces gradually take back territories from the Huks; in 1952, a series of army offensives captures a number of Huk commands; further Army offensives in 1953-1954 destroy more rebel camps, eventually forcing the surrender of the Huk leadership and bringing the war to an end
1968 - A new communist organization, also called Communist Party of the Philippines or CCP is formed, which sets up an armed wing called the New Peoples’ Army or NPA; in 1971, the CCP-NPA launches a new rebellion, which continues to the present day

that's why there's the word "friarocracy" - the Franciscan, Augustinian, and Dominican friars had thousands of hectares of haciendas and ruled as dictators controlling religious, economic, and social life of the natives🌍🌍🌍
