- In this lecture, I provide details about trait conscientiousness, the best predictor of life success after intelligence (particularly among managers, administrators and students). Sounds good? But conscientiousness is partly composed of aspect orderliness, along with industriousness, and orderliness is associated both with disgust and with authoritarianism (particularly among those low in openness to experience). Hitler and the Jews? The Holocaust? Orderliness and disgust sensitivity gone mad.

"Pandemic" is a very strong word for it. Global forced quarantine is more accurate. The virus is the justification for mass shutdowns by many governments who are overreaching in their authority, but the below 1.5M worldwide deaths do not justify this stacked against the world population nearing 8 billion. In the US alone if 1.5M were dead it would not justify this stacked against the just below 400M population even. It is a very dark sign I would say. I am quite sure JBP would agree.

There's a verse in the Bible that always intrigued me, which said "he who calls his brother fool is in danger of hellfire," and I'm pretty sure that it means the same thing- that when your pride allows you to start dehumanizing people, you're going bad places

"Phobic" and "anti" in reference to political correctness are not scientific terms, they are colloquial terms. There are scientific "phobic" terms, such as arachnophobia, but they are not related to the context of political correctness.
The word toxic is inherently dehumanizing, associating a person to something worthy of disgust dehumanizes them, as disgust turns off compassion.

I have always loathed going to class and actively paying attention in school or doing homework, yet I find myself stopping metallica videos and choosing to watch these lectures. Lately, I've been thinking about taking notes so I can retain more of its content, but I also have no problem re-watching these lectures for the same purpose.
Trust me, man, taking notes is soooo worth it. I've recently read a great book by one Mortimer J. Adler - 'How to Speak, How to Listen' (a sequel of sorts to one of his greatest pieces - 'How to Read Great Books'). He stresses the importance of taking notes, and it's so true! I haven't been reading much in past few years, and I had trouble concentrating on reading, but since I've started taking notes, I've had more success both with reading and with listening! Just imagine this - first you'd take notes for every lecture as it goes. You then should write another set of notes, this time as an analysis of the lecture. Eventually you'd have enough material to cross-reference it many, many times over, improving your understanding of the material dramatically. And every time you add more data to your base of knowledge, you can again deepen your understanding of the subject.
Careful, though) You never know just how deep into the depths of your very 'wetware' this rabbit hole goes.
First hour of the lecture: Being high in conscientiousness rocks! I'm nigh-superhuman compared to these messy, lazy blobs of flesh surrounding me.
Last half-hour: My god... no.... that... can't be me... that mustn't be me...

Also: As a Newyorker and having consequently interacted with tons of Jews, I'm shook at how accurate that Nazi video was about their culture, namely how they reserve morality for the in-group and not for the, ehh, "hosts."
Seeing that film with my temperament, I can feel myself being potentially persuaded--esp. if I had lost all my money to inflation, lost my husband to WW,1 and my sister to Spanish influenza.

My gag reflex is totally chill as I wallow in my own body fluids.
I'm fairly disgust-sensitive and conservatively minded, and when I saw the pictures of the unbelievable order that Hitler managed to create a thought like "I wish things were like this" had emerged in me and felt a bit of relief. It surprised me what an impact it had on me. It's rather chilling to think that I might have been a Nazi if I were born in the right place at the right time with my mix of traits...
A year on, I'm wondering what your take is on the pandemic measures.
@@thistles Well, I haven't been following other countries' regulations really, my own problems are a handful to begin with, but social isolation, quarantine and online school definitely takes a toll on everyone. To have little to no restrictions would have been the best at the begginning of the spreading of the pandemic when the virus was weaker and it's effects less severe, thus a large portion of the population could have gained a sort of "natural immunity". At this point however stricter measures may be justifiable. Nevertheless I'm not against constraints related to unvaccination since the vaccine really does seem to lessen symptoms and reduce mortality rates. These are my thoughts on the topic in a nutshell

@@grreguss I think that probably depends on the topic. Some traits are more relevant to some topics. I can see compassion overriding everything else when talking about welfare, for example. I would expect something similar when talking about disgust and disease, but apparently not!

Genomicist here, conscientiousness could be related to the HPA axis, in effect the same primordial part of the brain that makes squirrels and dogs bury food *for later.* Complex thought =/= planning ahead, this is a _far older_ system. Just guessing though, havent done research to support this.
Sounds reasonable - but it would have to be a really old system evolutionarily .... and that would beg the question why there are so many bipeds that have it to a much lesser extent than squirrels..... Is there a close relative of the squirrel in the tropics that doesn't save up food (because it is of no value under those conditions)?

- Orderliness: Keeps things clean. Follows a schedule and likes routine. Careful to detail
- Just because you're better at planning, it wouldn't necessarily apply that you're better at implementing
- Allow disgust to guide you. Control disgust. Keep borders with your actions

EVERY industrious person i know, myself included, are motivated by basically fear of death, and a badly spent life. Not sure if this datapoint is useful but its an observation i find incredibly interesting.

Evolutionary adaptation. The industrious survived the genetic bottlenecks caused by extreme famine, weather, etc. Hence, why northern europeans are more industrious. They had the harshest environment. Survived 2 ice ages.

It works. I used to be very anxious and was disgusted by filth. I later had a cleaning job in a restaurant as a potwash and cleaner. One time someone had explosive drunken diarrhea and I had to clean it up - I covered it in bleach and left it for the end of the shift to mentally build myself up to it. As I was wiping it off the toilet with a sponge and gloves, the sponge flicked and sent a filthy drop of poo to my face! I closed my eyes and it landed on my eye lid!
I maintained my self control, went and washed up my face for a few minutes, then finished the job. It taught me I could handle pretty dirty things well
Watched this while eating, messing with the phone and my head jumping from ramification to ramification of what was being said. Finally 1h30min about why I cant be unbusy with something.. Thank you

That's concerning of you, but maybe you come to the conversation already assuming you know everything or that we are stupid. Assume the person you're listening to knows something you don't, it makes conversation more profitable for everyone.
I think that psychological factors regarding the spread of massive plagues and how they affected world views were part of the MANY causes that lead mankind towards a dark century. Peterson also gives good explanation.
maybe conscientiousness is more a measure of long-term reliability. As in, no short term lab task can show you that. Anyone can focus and do a dull repetitive task for a while. But conscientious people are the people who will wake up every day, and without someone nagging them, do the task themselves for 3 hours a day, for 5 years just because they are "supposed" do it. Just a thought from listening to the "we have no clue what conscientiousness is" portion.
I think they're aware of what conscientious people are but they haven't found personality traits or leanings that can predict people's level of conscientiousness before they become evident through observation

I think the link between conscientiousness and depression is fascinating. Specifically in what it would say about a conscientious person’s appraisal of their own competence at a job for example. I had been depressed for awhile for multiple reasons and perhaps one cause (or effect, I’m not sure) of that depression was my own negative appraisal of how good I was at my job. Because I didn’t see myself as particularly effective at my job, I chose to work fewer hours and budget more. I put off planning my career because I didn’t feel good enough to progress in it. My friend is a counselor and one day I was describing how I was disgusted by how messy my roommate was. I told her I needed everything in order. She said that surprised her because she always saw me as much more relaxed (not conscientious). Well over time, when I started taking more responsibility and realizing I was more competent at my job than I had initially thought, I became hyper conscientious at it, basically doubling my hours and the amount of clients I was working with. Could it be that some people who exhibit signs of low consciousness are simply portraying that to the world to cover their guilt over not being as competent as they believe they should be? And once those negative thoughts are dealt with, their true conscientiousness can manifest itself?

I think he’s probably right on the part about how industrious people can’t stand inactivity. When I’m at work and there’s nothing to do, I walk around the store I work at and find little things to do. I can’t stand just standing around when I’m on the clock. I have to be moving, doing something.

This lecture... man. The topics and content of this lecture gave me an insight into myself that I won't soon forget.
If I had to guess about a predictor for conscientiousness, I'd probably guess that their dopamine hit is backloaded to the completion of a task, with no real correlation towards what that task is. Something like their brains quite literally are better at delaying gratification by delaying it until the job is finished, as opposed to tasks within the job being finished.

Jordan. Semi educated young Male here. I wanted to pursue psychology but couldn't stomach the cost versus reward and dont think I much fit in with social science, more of a technical and tinkering guy. I have seen entire biblical and maps of meaning, and more. I listen for 8 hours a day at work. You have made me feel that I have a deeper understanding of human psychopathology than I could ever afford to receive, and I've gotten it for little to no investment. I love what you do and hold these lectures dear, thank you so much.
Ps. I find myself craving this info, but also find myself in a dark place sometimes where I cannot do anything but listen to your lectures constantly, and they actually depress me a bit and put me in a bad mood sometimes even though I cant get enough of this information. It invokes something powerful. Either way, thank you, will be ordering gulag archipelago and collected works of Carl Jung as finances allow. Is there anything you recommend particularly by Nietzsche? Higher conscientiousness being related to less anxiety might also be because of their mindset relating to time/permanence. For example, we have all been through a bad breakup that leaves us feeling terrible and heartbroken. What do our friends always tell us? "It's hard right now but time will heal your heart". People who are lower in conscientiousness I think tend to live more immediately, in the moment, and thus have a hard time grasping that their current situation is not permanent and have an inability to look towards the future to a situation where they don't feel anxious. I think the level of permanence of a situation can greatly increase/decrease its level of anxiety. If you get a tattoo it is much less stressful than if you were kidnapped being tortured with needles because there is an amount of uncertainty about your future situation and ability to change that stressful situation.

if they can imagine good when everything is bad which can be relaxing, they can also imagine bad when everything is good which is stressing
I'm very high in conscientiousness. I experience less anxiety mostly because I make sure to order my life so that I wouldn't experience it. At the same time, I have felt a lot of distress during times when things haven't gone exactly how I wanted them to, and it can take me a very long time to be able deal with that.
A very sad story about that guy with OCD and his dog 😢 Glad he had a happy ending with his new dog. I’ve had OCD and worked on it by forcing myself NOT to actually clean something it until it was actually dirty... but then I would feel overwhelmed and in the meantime tortured by what only I thought was a mess... we humans are pretty interesting creatures. I thought of the middle man as discussed by Sowell, too, while watching this.
I think industriousness may have something to do with a person's stamina throughout the day.
This idea came to me because I scored low in industriousness and it made sense to me because I have such low stamina that it takes me a while to do something and once I do something it won't be long before I need a break.
I have went through times in my life where I was becoming more industrious and it was getting easier by the day. It only started getting easier after I abandoned my one-meal-a-day diet and began to eat food at certain times of the day out of necessity.

@@Outstanding_Gal exactly but once these companies emerge they gather around and work with lobbyists in order to make competition harder for other companies to emerge and rival them and introduce new regulations that work for the benefit of themselves and make the barrier for entering even harder so the fully free market without limiting regulatory environment would actually help other emerging companies to rival them and they will not be the monopoly duopoly or polyopoly for long there has to be always challenging side but once big companies get established and made their friends in Washington that challenging force gets demolished in the process so that’s why true free market without government intervention is the way to prevent
I would love to see a reference to V for Vendetta in this lecture. I would also like to see his point of view on how news outlets blow diseases and such, like ebola, out of proportion.
I dont think they do it consciously, although it may be. They may be driven by similar forces to the German population. Id love to hear Dr.Petersons explanation of that phenomena. Because these types on news stories seem to be reoccurring.

Phew, what an emotional rollercoaster!
I spent the first half with my hands over my mouth, full of shame and "oh, I'm so low in conscientiousness, I'll never be orderly and have a successful life! My children would die of diseases if we didn't have medicine!"
Particularly embarrassing was the "but people low on orderliness and industriousness are not total drains on society, they can find ways to make themselves useful" part, where the "making people laugh" and "creativity" and "forming strong bonds" are all legit actual things I've comforted myself with. I very much feel like people appreciate me for being funny, having good ideas, and loving them and helping them get along with each other. I'm not exactly a monetary asset, though!
And then in the last half: "OH. Well, at least I'm safe from that end of things..."

Terence Mckenna might have an interesting theory regarding conscientiousness. He might say that people who are high in conscientiousness (which is -as you frequently have pointed out- tied to disgust) are the fall back strategy for the process unfolding. We can call that process an evolution if we like, or something else, but I like the generic abstraction above it, hence "process unfolding".
While the rest of us omnivore monkeys are eating anything and everything to survive and move the evolutionary needle forward, often by ingesting mind-expanding drugs as TM proposes and I second, some of us better develop an aversion to this process or we risk self-extermination. Being open, extroverted, and willing to try anything is a high-risk / high-reward strategy.
So channeling my inner TM, I'd say that conscientious high disgust group are a fall back strategy for evolution.
I have to admit that there's a bit of an uncomfortable hole in my proposal. It's the disgust that is the active ingredient in this process, and I'm not sure which way the causation goes. Does disgust produce conscientiousness, or does conscientiousness produce disgust? If disgust produced conscientiousness I'd feel a lot better about my Terence Mckenna theory.

I noticed I'm conscientious and orderly when it comes about puntuality but not having a clean room or space (although peterson is helping with that)
