I saw them when on tour for this album in Toronto. It was a great concert. A lot of the material from that show became 220 Volts Live, which is absolutely one of the most incredible music experiences. Apparently Rockoon had a number of guitar parts that were difficult to play and was technically a challenging album. It didn't get the love it deserved. It wasn't a fan favourite. Listening to it now, after all these years, makes me think maybe they were ahead of their time. This was a heavy "rock" period. Personally, I loved every minute of it.
TDs basically it's own genre. They broke lots of ground, evolved thru different eras, and kept consistent. Not to mention have one of the biggest discographies ever
To be honest, although there is a wavestation involved in the album, there is also a korg 01/w, roland D70, roland jd800, sy77, also among others. The wavestation is just a new prototype within the time of the album release.
went to this concert, it was incredible. been listening to TD since i was 15, some 40 years or more ago. not many followers. not so into them since edger died, just not the same.
I'll get crucified for saying this, but I think the current lineup is making the best music released under the TD banner since Poland. I also think Thorsten Quaeschning is a better composer than Edgar. In the last couple of decades, Edgar's compositions had become all nice and clean to the point of being sterile. Thorsten brought the shadows back. I'm more than happy for TD to continue under Thorsten's leadership.
I think Thorsten has his own style which is a natural continuation of Edgar's vision. Ulrich is also very talented but brings a 'freshness' they need to keep the existing fans happy and grab new ones. Time will tell if they'll succeed. I hope they do as no other band comes close to their style.
@quasarsphere I think they are very good as the current threesome. Saw them in Manchester November 2023 and was a great gig. Far better than when Edgar toured with the larger "band". It was a bit gimmicky to me.
The Grammys are idiotic, worthless and meaningless; the nominations are irrelevant and stupid, like the Oscars have been devalued, laughable and a complete joke for decades. A lot of this album, originally released by Virgin in Germany (I still have the original CD), was written by Jerome Froese. Lots of good moments on Rockoon! I enjoyed it a lot when it came out and still listen to it from time to time.
I can't add anything more to your comments. I once knew people who swore by the Grammys...they were stupid & vapid. That's why I got away from political & popularity driven crap.
No kidding. Edgar was one of the few people who could, or really would dive into programming it, and getting usable sounds out of it that fit their style.
I know most diehard fans disagree but I LOVE the electric guitar, rocky sound on this. Can anyone recommend me any other similar rocking TD albums, their discography is too massive.
Wait 'til nightfall, go back to '79 _Force Majeure_ - roll one up and crank the volume on a big system. One of the best 1st-time TD album experiences there is, and it somehow never gets old :)
Saw them on this tour at The Warfield in San Francisco, with a certain M. Garcia and J. Salyers in attendance. Unfortunately the only time I saw them live. Would pay $1,000s today to go into a time machine to some early/mid-70s show, preferably the rubycon or stratosfear tour.
For those who've had land-lines, the guitarist on Big City Dwarves (Zlatco Perica) makes a sound at one point that you here just before the operator says "This number is no longer in service". And that really sucks for the dwarf.
TD made concert tour when this album came out. Saw them at the Coach House and couldn't believe how Edgar played the guitar so good. The man sure was a genius. The other guitarist and sax players were really good. Too bad group has reduced to 3 musicians. They are very good now but were awsome then.
There was only Edgar and Jerome Froese when this album was made, with additional musicians drafted in, and TD have been a threesome for many years, in particular the Franke, Froese, Baumann and Franke, Froese, Schmoelling years. It was the bigger "band" that Edgar used in the 90's and 2000's, which made it a bit gimmicky for me to be honest. The current threesome are closer to the essence of TD than the bigger group.
If you're logged in, it will remember even 20 seconds earlier than where you left it off. I just want to know: if Linda Spa is not on this album, as Wiki says, then who plays the sax?
@@EduardAntoniu That's a good question. Linda Spa is not listed on the personnel and none of the other musicians are credited with their instrumentation. So, I can't say for sure. I do know that Linda Spa was there for the tour. I saw her onstage with the other musicians back in '92.
I remember this was part of their music-in-search-of-a-B-grade-American-action-film phase. Far different from their 70s heyday and their most recent post-Froese incarnation. Best not to start your exploration here.
That harpsi/guitar synth patch always grated on me and they ended up using that on so many albums in this period. The early digital synth stuff sounded so lifeless that thank god there’s guitar on most of their work in this period.
Some of the greatest tracks and video Edgar did with Jerome. After his passing, never cared much for this off shoot of TD. I've tried to watch it. Without Edgar, there is no Tangerine Dream. As matter of fact, I don't like them at all!
Apart from the two opening tracks, all the album is very, very far from TD quality standard... Music : crap. Sounds : crap. Production : crap. And they did ever worse with the following albums "Turn of the tides" & "Tyranny of beauty' !
Crap to you is another listeners Gold! Don't be so critical, learn to accept that we all have different tastes. This is the favourite album for many TD fans . Tyranny of Beauty is one of my favourite... played more often than Phaedra, Ricochet, Logos. As I said - all a matter of personal taste.
@@wtc175 OK, the word crap is a bit too hard. But everybody has the right to be critical. This is art and as you said, we all have different tastes. For me, the trilogy Rockoon/Tides/Tyranny is very weak.

I got this on cd in 95 or 96 when I was 15 or 16. Freaking memories
In 1992 I bought this album on CD and played it every day on the way to work, work was 45 minutes away. Good times.
Tangerine Dream is the best Band ever 😂❤😂❤
TD is my number one prog band.Edgar Froese was one of the best progressive musician this wold had.
Agree no comparison.

Imagine how many synth patches they have? 😎
"...basically its own genre" is a great description for TD. Kudos to you my friend
It's been over 30 years and I still love this music !
I bought this CD when it was released...still got it. This CD is Awesome!
I borrowed it from the library when it came out - and never returned it haha.
@@markuslaunsburry Can you imagine the late fees by now lol.
Same here I have the CD too when first released.
Can't believe its almost 30 years... still listening to the masterpiece ! One of their best, no doubt about it.

That album art is the most early 90’s thing Ive ever seen, great music as always!
I wore a similar t shirt as a kid 😂
29 years old when I bought this on cassette when it came out
22 years old here! LOL.
I remember my mother thinking I was needing drug counseling at age 15 as I listened to RICOCHET.
Folk seem surprised at how good the guys were on guitars, but that's how they started out
Tangerine Dream impõe respeito . Arrasou !!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ .
I love "Touchwood" as well as "Girls on Broadway".
First major use of Kurz's groundbreaking K2k was on this great album released in late '92 I believe kids thanx folks
Killer album!!!
It seems there are very few people that have heard everything from TD. I'm so amazed at how much music this band has put out.
I went to a TD concert in Washington DC during the time this came out
It awesome 👌
Loved Jerome s purple haze guitar solo 💜
I saw them during this tour. Massey Hall, Toronto. Great show.

I just read that this album won a Grammy the year it was released. After listening to this, I can understand why. =)
Nominated, but didn't win. Either way, had there been appropriate categories pre-1990 or so, TD would have walked away with a slew of Grammys.

Thanks for posting this album for fans to enjoy. One i've not heard before.
classic music, the video is very impressive
Not a very interesting album by TD standards, but it does get better as it goes on. Title track is the highlight.
For those who've had land-lines, the guitarist on Big City Dwarves (Zlatco Perica) makes a sound at one point that you here just before the operator says "This number is no longer in service".
