"When I was approached by the creators of Dear Evan Hansen to reimagine the song "Waving Through A Window,” the lyrics immediately resonated with me. It almost felt like it was written about my own life story. Having now had the opportunity to collaborate on my own version of the song, the experience has become even more surreal.
I’ve always been a bit of an outsider. For as long as I can remember, I’ve marched to the beat of my own drum. When I first discovered songwriting, it revealed to me who I was on the inside: a driven, innovative, expressive, passionate kid with an infinite imagination. But on the outside, I was a painfully shy, reticent, withdrawn introvert with low self-esteem and little self-respect. After ten years of creating music, I’ve since found my place in a world that offers me the chance to be anything I want, and I choose to simply be myself. I embrace being an outsider. I look at myself in the mirror and I feel nothing but confidence, optimism, assertiveness and happiness. But it wasn’t always that way.
When I was first introduced to the character of Evan Hansen, I felt like I was watching myself in high school. I knew how it felt being on the outside looking in. I knew how it felt waving through the window, wondering if anyone was waving back at me. I had terrible social anxiety, I was painfully shy, I didn’t have many friends and I rarely spoke to my classmates. I viewed social interaction as a threat, not as an opportunity to share. So I withdrew from the world around me and poured myself into my music because it was the one thing that made me feel adequate. In the same way Evan took to writing letters, I took to writing music in order to deal with the troubles of life.
As the years went by, my social anxiety slowly melted away. I began my music career and worked my way through a tumultuous industry by simply being myself. Despite sudden and surprising successes, I never wanted to be a celebrity. I never wanted to work in Los Angeles or New York City. I was always content working in my small town in Minnesota. And so, my story is a bit unconventional compared to how other pop artists break out. But I know with all my heart, if it weren’t for God, and for songwriting, I’d still be that same timid kid with more phobias and fears than ever.
After a decade of doing my own thing, I am the opposite of who I used to be, and the most important thing I’ve learned is to fight for what’s most important: being myself.
I suffered from some of the same hardships Evan did. But in the end, I was able to overcome those hurdles and conquer my lack of confidence. And now, for the first time in my life, I know exactly what I want to do. I want to make the kind of music I feel called to make without compromise. I want to write about my own life experiences and my own struggles. I want to write about the grand adventures I’ve had, the things I’ve seen, the places I’ve been, the people I love. I want to write music like an author writes an autobiography. I want to write about my own personal experiences and life stories because they are important. They are real and true and worth honoring.
I am still an outsider. But that’s okay with me. I am the only thing I know how to be. I am myself."
"I think Ben definitely is a lot more of a professional singer than I am; I didn’t have any formal training. It was tough to study his version, especially the bridge -- the "When you’re falling in a forest and there's nobody around” part -- that was tough for me to keep up as far as the inflection, the speed. It’s very loose and free-flowing, the way he sings it. That’s not really my style, but I loved how he sang it, so I had to try to nail that down. It was a really cool challenge to have that kind of guideline. I was a little intimidated at first, but I surprised myself with how much I enjoyed being pushed out of my comfort zone."

Adam (Owl City): "It was them calling me saying "We’re big fans of your work" -- which I still can’t believe -- "we’re trying to kind of re-imagine 'Waving Through a Window' in more of a pop genre versus the theatrical version." And they said they looked at each other and thought, "Let’s get the Owl City guy." "

"One of the things that Alex, Benj and Justin mentioned to me in their initial pitch was, conceptually, if there was a radio in Evan Hansen's bedroom, they thought it would be playing Owl City music. He’s this outsider, he’s got social anxiety, a lot of things I dealt with as a high schooler myself. So just, "Live with this image of this kid in his bedroom, playing stuff that sounds like you, and come up with your own interpretation." That gave me a lot of inspiration to approach it in my own way."
THANK YOU! Ripping my hair out here yelling at my screen. They asked for a different, fireflies version and that's EXACTLY what they got and it's brilliant. They didn't want a tearjerker copy of the original.

Adam is the same as Evan Hansen. Adam was a very introverted and shy person just like Evan when he was a high school student. But he overcame his conflict in the mind. I'm so glad that he sang this song. Great job, Adam!

i don't really understand the people who don't like this song simply because it lost the mood of the original. first of all, this is a different version of a the original, which was actually requested by the people from DEH to make. so i mean, Owl City shouldn't be to blame for the upbeat melody; DEH already knew Owl City's tone of songs and they decided it'd be a nice cover opportunity regardless of the happy tone. also, if you listen to many of Owl City's songs, many of them are actually quite depressing but they're hidden behind a major key and bright, electronic notes. it's really the same here. none of Owl City's songs are actually in the key of minor but many of them cover sad and touchy topics, especially within the lyrics.

The beat reminds me of Maybe I'm Dreaming where he could put a lot of stuff into a beat and make it so magical.
In my opinion, this really relates to how Owl City play most of his songs like Paper Tigers or Wolf Bite. He always has this happy tune in the back and the way his voice sings it is the same way. But if you read into the lyrics they're really lonely and sad. You need to read into what he's saying rather then listening to how he sings it or how the instruments are played

While I definitely wouldn't use this cover for the musical, it sounds amazing in its own right... It's sorta like listening to Will Roland's cover of Michael in the Bathroom from Be More Chill. It's the same song but it focuses on a different area considering the singer is definitely different. Still amazing!

I've been an Owl City fan for forever! (See what I did there?) and yes, I have listened to more songs than Fireflies, and I've also been a huge DEH fan so seeing him do this song kinda just killed me inside because this is SO GREAT! TWO OF MY FAVORITE THINGS ARE COMBINED!! I CANT HANDLE THIS!!

yeah, it sounds more like a song that you would hear on the radio. I'm not saying Adam does not have a good singing voice though! I just think that this cover sounds like a traditional song that he would make. I love both versions equally, Ben Platt definitely had more emotion to it, and Adam makes it sound calmer and more relaxed. Also, I love Be More Chill

Tears were coming out of my eyes. Fireflies is one of the most nostalgic songs for me, I can remember listening to it while I played ROBLOX when I was younger and just roleplaying on my own, I was so kind and passionate (somewhat haha). Oof. DEH has gotten me through a ton, too.
