    I was hired and had couple of DUI’s in my background and other misdemeanors, fired from a handful of jobs. All were 7+ years past some up to 15 years prior. I was never asked about any of it in my interviews. My background investigator asked if there was anything about my past he should know. I told him everything. They can do a livescan on you and see everything you’ve done. They want to know your honest not perfect. I told my investigator, that was ALL before I wanted to be a firefighter since deciding to become a firefighter I’ve been 100% dialed in not even a parking ticket.
    I hope this helps someone . I didn’t chase my dream of being a firefighter till later in life because of my mistakes. I finally said I have to go for it otherwise I will never be truly happy. I wish this video was around 18 years ago.

      @M W who cares what other people think. Mistakes build character and it’s all about how you respond. Will you continue down the wrong path or will you learn, move on and improve your life. What separates most people who’ve gotten in trouble with others is they got caught and others haven’t. Yet. I’m glad I got all the poor decisions out of my life before I started my fire career. I’m a better man for it, I have empathy for people and understand what it’s like to be down and think life’s over.

    I'm usually the front line when it comes to the answering background questions for our agency. Ultimately, a potential candidate will be interviewed by a private investigator prior to the Chief's interview, but here is the bottom line for where I work: Any felony is a NO. One misdemeanor will require a sit down with the Chief and HR who will make the final decision. Two misdemeanors is a NO. Any DUI is a NO. Any reckless that started out as a DUI will require a sit down with the Chief and HR who will make the final decision. 3 driving infractions within the last 3 years is also a NO.

    Hey I was wondering how sealed records work in regards to the fire fighting process. I got a felony breaking and entering back in college about 6 years ago I went thru a diversion program to get it sealed and haven’t been in trouble since. I was wondering would they still be able to see the sealed records, should I address it and be upfront about it or is it something that can’t be used against me anymore. Thank you!

    • @mike_pertz
      @mike_pertz  Před 3 lety +1

      That's a good question. I think it depends on the individual and where you are at in your recovery. I say that because as a firefighter you will inevitably be put in situations where to have to deal with tragedy and it effects everyone differently.

    • @texasnative7844
      @texasnative7844 Před rokem +2

      As long as it wasn't a violent or sexual crime I would assume it wouldn't hinder you too much. However, my advice would be to call a local firehouse and setup a ride along, or just ask to come tour. And why you're there just ask them about disqualifiers and if your comfortable tell them about your deffered adjudication.
      Most of the firefighters I know use to do stupid stuff. I'm 21, testing for my dream department right now, and Lord knows I did some stupid stuff in high school.
      At the end of the day, honesty is ALWAYS what they are looking for.
      Hope that helps, good luck J.
