Oxygen Changes - Oxygen Changes EP (1999)

Somewhere between the summer and fall of 1998, Scott Kawczynski and former Ethel bandmate, Aaron Larson formed the emo/indie rock band, Oxygen Changes. Recruiting Aaron’s younger brother Josh as the drummer, who had little to no experience, but did a mighty job at it, and Jon Shikele, who Scott had known for a few years prior. They would practice in the basement of a huge house on the corners of North Hamilton, Butler, and East Johnson. The band only preformed a handful of shows around Madison, mostly basement shows, and the odd one at The Loft, and the other at O-Cayz Corral. They did perform show in Minneapolis and in Milwaukee. They only ever released a four-track EP, limited to 100 copies, recorded in February of 1999 with Chris Rosenau in Milwaukee. There was a CDr containing three additional tracks recorded on a 4-track that were recorded in May of 2000, that was never publicly made available, only to document the band. The group later disbanded in August of 2000, when Scott moved to NYC for a job, Jon moved to San Francisco, Aaron moved to Boston to go to graduate school, and Josh stayed in Madison. There was no real ambition with Oxygen Changes, just kids that enjoyed music and having fun, but if they did decide to take it seriously, who knows where they would have been today. My favorite tracks being ‘Views from the Chrysler building’, and ‘Pile’, filled with such vigor and vibrancy, bringing life to such a short project. A beloved EP, truly a gem lost in time.
