The concept of gender neutral haircuts especially in regards to pricing is really eye-opening. Learnt something new today and also Leslie rocks this cut so well!
Well the reason why women's haircuts are typically more expensive as she mentioned charging by length is because it takes a lot more product to change color and a lot more time to actually do a cut I mean she didn't mention she would be charging by hour which completely makes sense but she seems to be neglecting that charging by product it'd be kind of like a carpenter only charging for labor but not for materials
it looks soo cool but i feel like calling it gender neutral adds to the idea that there are certain hairstyles for certain gender instead of just being hair, like i don’t think there is a girly or boy-ish hair cut you can wear what you like w/out giving it a tag
edit: this was more about the end of the video because they said that they went with a ‘more feminine’ hairstyle, and i felt like it was a little contradictory to said that if you’re calling it gender neutral.
Yeah it’s just silly to add that, like a hair cut is a hair cut
Yeah, but some hairstyles are designed for certain genders, like the Pixie Cut, sure anyone could get it but like if a guy walked in asking for that the “typical”stylist would probably question what he means because a lot of hair design is gendered whether we accept it or not . I think what they meant by “gender neutral” hair is that the styles can be indefinitely for anyone like that’s a huge thing in the hair industry is always designing a style around someone’s gender rather than taking a freehanded artistic approach not thinking so much about the persons gender rather it’s embracing anyone can rock whatever style
It's for the clicks... ✨ MARKETING ✨
Yeah, ridiculous and getting stu:pid now, I'm sick of this gender sh:t agenda
Or call it androgynous like ppl have been saying for decades lol. If I get a style like this I’m not tryna be labeled gender neutral
Did anyone actually watch the video? Pelona says multiple times the reason for calling these cuts "gender neutral" and clarifies that hair is just hair and should be worn however the person wants regardless of gender identity.... seems like no one is even watching the video and making assumptions and it's so shitty to erase the creativity from this amazing hairstylist. I WISH Pelona was around when I was younger growing up in a conservative, catholic Mexican community so I didn't have to kill my hair every single time I used metallic box dyes like Splat.
Splat smelled so good though
I don’t understand how people come here and complain that all hair is gender neutral (it is) yet misgender those in the video. Y’all hating hard. Thank you Pelona for creating such an important and affirming space!!! We need more people like you
fr!!!
its giving TRANSPHOBIC.
“I had a masculine haircut” and it’s just short hair🤦🏻♀️so regressive…
If gender is an expression of identity in oneself, then why are you trying to enforce your own ideals on someone else? I swear some people in this community continue to refuse to let people do what they're comfortable with and allow them to express themselves. You don't think someone can feel more masculine or express their masculinity with certain haircuts? We don't need to perform for you to accept us. I can wear a basic ass shirt, say I'm feeling more masculine and that's not up for you to decide. Your thinking is not as progressive as you think it is lmao... that's what's the killer
@@SPDcru Isn't your entire comment "trying to enforce your own ideals on someone else"?
If someone wants to view gendering haircuts as regressive, let them. That's not for you to decide.
i can't believe i know pelona back when we were both just high schoolers on the internet and now they're out here being featured on a huge outlet like refinery 29 after all the hard work they put in. love this so much for them and i can't wait to see what's up next
Okay but Leslie seems like so much fun! I love their energy and overall aura, they seem like they’d be so much fun to have at a party hahaha
I like the haircut and I think it suits the client quite well. At first I was trying to understand what exactly made this hairstyle gender neutral from an aesthetic standpoint, and then I realized that the stylist was describing the haircut as gender neutral in the conceptual sense. It's true that anyone should be able to get any kind of hairstyle regardless of gender, but I would've loved to see something that played with the optics of gender presentation a bit more.
PELONA!!! If you’re ever in LA please go get your haircut by them. As someone who is neurodivergent and is non-binary. They really do their best to make their space very comforting and affirming.
Love Pelona 💖💖💖 they’re so good at what they do!! And so inclusive 😊
Isn’t all hair cuts are gender neutral? lol
No you don't get it, she has to look different
Yeah but these people love putting things in gender boxes so that they can be "special"
It should be and that is the literal point of the video lmao.
Yeah but she's extra special and has to be different
So proud of you Pelona + the safe space you created through your art I love you
In the original punk era of the 70s and 80s. lots of "unisex" hair salons did edgy styles for clients of both sexes. Such as Astor Place in NYC shown here: czcams.com/video/Wzo037ak71A/video.html
great job pelona
I wish I was bold enough to dye my hair! That red is 🔥And a gender neutral salon is great! That way people know they are entering a safe space - unlike this comment section 😕
Bold look. Wish the color on the bangs was more even.
I think it looked uneven thanks to the lack of a proper blow out/not using a straightener. They were crooked on one side.
amazing!💕
I could see having a hairstyle like this, whether male, female or non-binary. Nicely done!
Love it!
Nicely done!
First time being disappointed I got to the comments early 😆..
" Because I like the attention" pretty much sums up HER lifestyle!
Obviously. Why else would she use she/they pronouns
100% as most of them
You sound like you want attention, Sir.
Love the hair.
This looks fun. I wonder where I can book this hairstylist!
Due by the sword on IG
die by the sword in LA!
Leslie's hime cut is amazing. Pelona did such a fantastic job, I wonder if they do Black hair as well?
i do!
Pelona’s cuts
leslie is super fun love u leslie
I’ve always wanted to dye my hair a fun color but I’m too scared to ruin my curls 😭
Thank goodness for ethical sourced wigs 🙌
Try the As I Am curl paint! It’s made for curly hair (it’s temporary though) and they have fun colors!!
Girl just do it! I have curls/waves, got my hair bleached by a professional and they look no different. If you're hesitant maybe try highlights or a balayage first to see how your hair reacts to the bleaching and coloring, either way just have fun with it!
I’ve been bleaching for a few years and my curls are still in tact. They’ll change but they won’t be ruined. Having a natural specialist who happens to be a colorologist is key. And then maintenance outside of appointments as well!
It’s cute , I like it. Just w/o the black tips
Oh my God, you all talking about the controversy behind labelling it gender neutral hairstyle, and no one opinting the obvious: the haircut itself is baaaad, ridiculousness.
Tru
You couldn’t rock it that’s whi
This is a super cool hairstyle.
FUCK YEAH PELONAAAA
Gender neutral pink haircut? This title alone makes Buzzfeed look conservative 😂
capitalising on gender neutrality like this doesn't sit well with me at all
as you can see from my pfp, I also do whatever the f*ck I want with my hair and that's that. it's. just. hair.
please stop adding to the already existing stigma around it 😩
Pelona says the reason they started calling the cuts "gender neutral" was to signify the space being trans-safe. Like, honestly, corporations like Target acting like they are heavily involved with the LGBT+ communities during one month a year to sell shit is capitalizing. Calling out an independent, queer hair stylist just seems weird? Like kinda goofy
Capitalizing..? They’re literally just trying to explain that hair is for everybody and there shouldn’t be stigma around it when there still clearly is. Why are you so mad
yesssss. i had so much fun shooting this with y’all. pelona did an amazing job!
Do you still have this style ans color ?
The fk??🤣🤣
I must say this looks terrible :(
Well she has to look gender neutral. How can she look woke without a gender neutral hair color? She can't look like a woman
If you like the cut /colour or not, the bangs were badly standing up on one side. For some reason, they didn't correct that before the reveal.
nah this is sick. peak punk. pretty much exactly what leslie was looking for
Trust me lad. I have seen FAR WORSE
I love it
Everyone in the comments is so triggered. Obviously hair is hair and all cuts are gender neutral. But this video was trying to show they wanted a haircut that is outside the stereotypical 'womens' haircut norm. Yes every hair cut is gender neutral but be realistic most men's cuts are different then most women's cuts. Not everyone obviously but most guys don't have long hair and most girls don't have super short hair lol. Their are styles that are seen as more feminine and styles that are seen as more masculine.
Hair length and style depends on the era. Look into history and you can see that in some eras eg 17C & 18C men had very long hair or wore long wigs. And in the 1920s women cut their hair and often had quite 'boyish 'styles -
In more recent times - eg 1960s/70s both sexes often had very long hair, while in the 80s+ many people had very 'edgy ' cuts - punk styles- goth, buzz cuts - mohicans etc, both men & women coloured their hair, wore outrageous make up etc. Qv David Bowie, Adam Ant, the Stones, etc etc.
@@johannayaffe2647 Yes but obviously we are referring to modern day haircuts
Could you see this hairstyle on a man? I think it could be cool, especially with a shirt in a contrasting color. Awesome video!
I’ve seen tons of dudes with this cut it looks great I want more guys to do it haha
It looked great when it was hot pink all over. The blocks of black ruined the look for me, especially the ones at the mid cheek line. I like the cut tho.
Second hand embarrassment.
I have met crusties like this, TRUST ME.
Very creative ❤️🔥
Fun video! It raises some interesting questions about what gender neutrality is.
It's a cry for attention
@@Afmedic85 how?
lmao, hi cousin I didn’t know I had✨
The comment section is giving “gender blind” like gender norms aren’t a thing
I liked her hair at the end
Damn the black is reaaaally uneven lol
this looks sooo good!!
i hope Leslie's nose piercing bump get better tho.
Ridiculous attention seeking behavior, please change the title, all hairstyles are gender neutral.
💕💕💕💕
Um...,. Can y’all at least tag Pelona in the bio .... im pretty sure they would of appreciated people able to see their IG or CZcams channel or something. I wish I could follow their IG
Everybody's talking about the gender topic and I'm thinking to myself. She started with the bleach in the roots lol
Okay scene roots
Comments are so mean lol. The hair looks good. They did a great job !
What is a gender neutral hair stylist.
Her hair is stunning!!!! They look so punk indeed!!!
We’re doomed!!
Duh. It's all thanks to lgbtxyze=mc2 people and people who make their sexuality (made up or otherwise) their personality
As a hair stylist, I’m kind of disappointed. Calling a specific hair style “gender neutral” and then talking about how people should be able to do whatever they want with their hair is a bit backwards and confusing. You can’t claim one specific hairstyle to be gender neutral, they all are! Anyone can get anything they want but with that being said, I personally wouldn’t trust this stylist with my hair. She seems to have a specific style (and that’s fine, we all do!) but I’d expect more from a professional.
I think the stylist calls it that to let trans people that it’s a safe space, which isn’t always true for most salons.
Not you misgendering them and then completely missing the point.
You did not literally just misgender a person who claimed they call the cuts gender neutral/androgynous to signal that their studio is a safe space... You claim it to just be hair like you don't see gender but then ignored someone's pronouns LMAO
@@iLaLa12 No no, she said _"I_ use they/them pronouns" - it's her personal choice what pronouns to use. Other people can use the language they want to describe the world, and she's free to do the same.
Entirely agree. It's really backwards to attribute this specifically to gender when hair is hair.
She kinda looks like Doja cat at the end
I'm just not going to call a chicken a turkey, oh well.
I truly and honestly wish people were less judgy of others gender choices. I care if people are respectful, contributing members of society. I couldn't care much less about what color you wear or if your haircut is too feminine/ masculine. It enrages me that people are so gender conforming, but I guess if we cared less, the prices for things would have to shift and no big company likes financial loss.
The people who are the loudest about gender non conforming are coming full circle. They're the ones telling little girls who like cars They're boys and boys who like dresses they're girls
no hair style is “gender neutral” it’s just a hairstyle
I thought all hairstyles were gender neutral? I’m learning something new everyday.
these comments are disgusting, I LOVE the cut on them
All haircuts a gender neutral. But this pink wolfcut is as punk as five o'clock tea - i expect a mohawk but thats not virtue signalling enough I guess
Punk is saying "idgaf what society thinks. I'm gonna do this for me and my comrades." And, sure, there are some aesthetics that are more cassically considered punk, but trying to gatekeep what is and isn't punk feels very against what punk is about.
@@scouttyra so "i dont bow to societys rules of what a woman is, so I have to call myself not a woman" is also against punk, thanks for this.
@@PraiseJ-Pope trans, qenderqu33r, and gnc people have always been a part of the punk movement.
I'm like when people dress up in an alternative style it let's me know to stay the fuck away from them
Pokemon
Looks pretty feminine, as she said
Trying way too hard. This video will not age well
U not aging well either
Interesting fact: it's hard to promote my CZcams channel so I should write such comment to promote it.
No
Im very confused. Im glad that this is a trans safe space, but that doesn’t equate gender neutral. My trans bestie is waaay more conventionally “girlie” than I, but this stylist is falsely insisting a different convention. I’m just confused.
I'd say it's more at the fault of how Refinery edited/titled the video
@@amber9040 Perhaps you're right, but I am quoting what the stylist themselves said about their services.
Your trans best friend would do good to stop trying to get attention and be a woman
@@Yomommalikeditlastnight im literally trans lol
....this generation is unbelievably contradictory & self obsessive.
😔 noooo
*cringe*
even the way they talk is annoying
Oh Gen Z.
She talks about a gender neutral look, yet she/they is/are happy it is a more feminine style. 🤯
This is still regarded as a gender-neutral haircut because "feminine" isn't a gender. You can have a more masculine haircut and still be gender-neutral. Hope that helps!
😂
I don't want to offend, he/she is gorgeous and has great healthy hair! Leslie takes wonderful care of his/her hair. "Back in the day" I wanted to have hairstyles "outside the box". I had what was called "racing stripes" in front. And I looked in a magazine and saw a "bob" hairstyle with a thin piece of hair trimmed out of the back center. I wanted that. What I ended up doing was an asymmetrical cut where there was a diagonal cut from the nape of of one side of my neck to the arch of my eye brow and the other side longer or medium longer. A lot of upside down drying, back combing and hairspray and MIRRORS came into play. I wore a lot of leather/pleather and took a TON OF FLACK FROM "HILLBILLIES". I wasn't into color much, but highlights around the front and the half head. I've ways liked progressive thinking and individuality. We are all different and we don't all think the same. Things are always changing and we must embrace it. This was wonderful. I'm sorry if I offended anyone by not knowing how to call a person who is gender neutral when I've not been formally introduced. And I do tend to stare, but it's always in admiration and not in criticism. So, I do approach the person and tell them how much Iove what I'm seeing. This tutorial was exceptionally beautiful. Partially, the model partially the artist and partially the show piece, the out come of the lovely hair.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤.
she legit says in the video her pronouns are she/they. bruh.
Okay, nice try but that's not their pronouns. She said her pronouns are she/they. Now, try it again.
yayaya thanks!
@@allyyyyyyp i watched and forgot. Hairstylist is they/them but client k dunno
At least op is trying.
TIL red hair = gender neutral. k
Gendering things that we were trying to remove the gender from for decades is regressive. Women doing hair/ getting hair done in any style is fine. Its just hair. It's not woke nor is it conservative.
I need a hairstylist like this near me :( every time I go to haircuttery they judge me for not having perfect hair. I asked for a mullet last time and they all like, laughed. At me. Lol. And they were like "you're going to ruin your perfect she/her femenine hair!!"
:(
I did haircuts like that on myself when I was ten. Haircuts that turned out way better than this one!
I want to wake up one morning and find out that my portfolio is $1,000,000 . I know it’s possible

Why bleach it all if you’re putting black dye on the ends??
That looks hideous wow
The color job is awful
People who make pronouns their personality are annoying. Anyway the hairstylist has a great marketing strategy. Charging by the hour as opposed to different prices for men and women.
Simply no.
Ohhh the walking contradiction...
sigh....
Just no. And that includes the blond eyebrows. 👎
Weird shit
That's so ugly... Some ppl just want to stand out in the wrong way... 🤦♀️
whats up with her eyes
Not good maybe a mall job, hair art but not real life reality
Everything about this video is so 💀
this is dumb but the hair is cute
Soooo, she lacked attention growing up,per her words…but ok, carry on.
That's not a gender neutral be haircut or colour. She obviously isn't looking to be employed anywhere 🤣🤣
So, she’s into the attention of getting a punk look, not the ethos of punk 🙄
They both seemed drugged 🙃🙃🙃
