  • Low stomach acid is arguably one of the more common reasons for acid reflux AKA GERD, meaning that proton pump inhibitors are not the most appropriate medications for this condition. If low stomach acid is the cause, then our approach should be to increase production of stomach acid, which will have an effect on the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). This is how I address GERD.

You are absolutely right. I currently have severe acid reflux and my doctor gave me Lansoprazole which reduced the reflux but got worse again after 2 weeks. I complained to him and he told me I would be on the drug for the next 3 months. I just knew something wasn't right. I've started taking oregano, apple cider, betaine hcl and milk thistle and I began feeling better in days. And of course I changed my diet. I will never advice anyone with gut or stomach issues to see a conventional doctor. They know nothing about the digestive system 🤦‍♀️

I have had problems with silent reflux these last few years. At least that what it seems to be and according to my doctors, ENT, gastro., etc. I am 66 and I would imagine by now my stomach has low acid and I am having a very tough time trying to figure this out what to do. None of my doctors have given me a real solution to this. In the past, I have drank either beer or more recently wine and I wake up at night with a very acid stomach it seems. So, I have taken PPIs, worked somewhat but I have been staying away from acidy foods so I do not have issues. I have had a real problem with clearing my throat with mucus and even as far as having it getting into my bronchioles and having chronic chest and throat cough. Fed up with the whole thing...

what if you have gastritis or ulcer? If you have already damage there, the idea is to take PPI for a while to give the stomach lining a chance to heal. Then taper off PPI. As far as I understand this is probably the only legitimate way of using PPI.

  • @Chanae12
    @Chanae12 Před 9 měsíci +1

I believe that lots of people who don’t have a properly working LES is because of R-CPD. If you can’t burp or you barely burp, lots of air builds up under the LES. This causes it to stretch over time. I’ve had this all my life. Never burped ever. Doctors don’t believe that it’s an issue but it is. I’ve been on PPI’s for 5 years and now I have Barrett’s Esophagus. I believe this is from not burping. Also, why would I be on PPI’s if no one even knows if my stomach acid is too high or too low? I’ve never had testings…. Now i think my acid is getting so low from the PPI’s that I believe my acid reflux is bad. I’ve never even had acid reflux back in the day. They just did an endoscopy and told me I have acid reflux and to take PPI’s. 5 years later, low iron, digestion issues, nutrient depletions… so on. I don’t know why doctors have to put us all on PPI’s when the problem is NOT the acid. The problem is the lower sphincter. Makes me mad at doctors / medical system.

About 2 to 3 months ago, starting experincing the symptoms of GErd and Acid reflux but I didn’t know what it was. It slowly got worse culminating I’m very bad nausea and upset stomach. I went to a headstrong doctor who do an endoscopy. He said I had a “GOOD SIZED” hiatial hernia. On the endoscopy the hiatial hernia was listed as medium sized. He told me that this was the cause of all of my issues. He prescribed 60mg ppi and told me that surgery could be an otption in the future. I took the ppis for about 10 days and got relief. I also met telephonically with a nutritionist. I sent stool samples into a lab. The samples showed gas and bacteria in them that indicated I had leaky gut and most probably bad bacteria in my stomach and SIBO. The nutritionist believes that SIBO is the root of the problem. So much different advice from different places. From your experience can bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine be a cause of GERD. What do you suggest I do? This came out of nowhere.

I shared all my concerns about meds and especially for my stomach because I’m celiac and got GERD from becoming very sick after a major autoimmune flare. I explained my concerns for my intestines but he says yeah take the PPIs until you feel better and says he takes them every year when he gets GERD flares. I only took them a week and was experiencing worsening symptoms in my stomach and more acid reflux.
I made such a mistake because I’d been sick so long I wanted a quick relief but healing takes time, especially from my celiac damage after being glutened. Doctors often know next to nothing about celiac disease. 🙄

I had a terrible experience with omeprazole, my doctor told me not to eat anything because I couldn't hold liquids downs and to take omeprazole twice a day. Long story short I went 4 days without eating and ended up in the hospital. I do think so have low HCL, but for some reason I had too much acid in my blood and was given the diagnosis of metabolic acidosis. So given that diagnosis I did everything to reduce (H2 receptor blockers, antacids, baking soda with water and ect.) my stomach acid levels, but I'm just finding out that I actually may suffer from low HCL. It makes sense, I have food intolerances, dry skin, I can't process meats efficiently, I'm full after a couple bites, and I have chronic acid reflux ever since highschool. Even as a child my stomach was always sensitive, and it only became worse with age. Glad I found this video!

It seemed to go away but 2 months later I have gotten the same issues all over again and have tried several medications for the ETD and have had acid reflux as well. I reluctantly started a short dose ppi but some of my symptoms seem as if it could be a lack of acid as you mentioned. One doctor recommended trying a ppi for 3 months and to “get scoped” if it doesn’t sort itself out by then. How do you get to fix the LES to tightly close if the muscles are loose, if the LES doesn’t close (i.e the door which closes the esophagus and stomach) the acid will still come up causing GERD (Acid Reflux).
I understand there is surgery called nissen fundoplication which rectify this , weaning off PPI’s will not cure LES to shut.
If you have a treatment for LES to shut off keeping from acid to entering esophagus , then I will much interested in this weaning off.

Hi Dr Timmerman. I'm 22 y.o male born with Esophageal Atresia. My esophagus was connected when I was 10 months old.
But since I was 3-4 y.o, about once every week, I suffer from extreme nausea and vomiting (mostly saliva) for a full day. I have to stay in bed for the whole day and have no appetite to consume anything at all.
What I know so far is that my esophagus length is much shorter compared to ordinary people and I don't have lower esophageal sphincter which prevents stomach acid from going up to the esophagus.
When I got sick, my saliva production is more than usual, runny nose for a whole day (only sneezes out water), and farts way smellier than when I'm healthy. I don't know my acid production is too much or too low.
Do you think that my weekly nausea and vomiting is more contributed by my abnormal esophagus or stomach acid production? I really hope for your advice, because I have graduated from university this year and I'm terrified companies don't want to hire me because of my health problem. Thanks, Dr Timmerman!

I don't understand why you need to taper off PPI if you suspect a low acid cause of reflux. If rebound acidity still causes symptoms then it means the acid is still too low. Why not welcome this rebound acidity and add HCL supplements, etc.. I just don't get the point of tapering PPI's if more acid is welcomed

@@lollydog81 its a shame NHS doesn’t have a solution for this. GPS prescribe PPIs for acid reflux which is dangerous taking it long term. I took it for a year and a month and a lot of problems ensued as stomach acid was completely depleted. I opened up myself to Candida and other malaise-tested for H pylori, and was prescribed antibiotics which disrupted my gut flora affecting my GI tract. I’ve suffered indigestion, constipation, bloating, more heartburn and acid reflux even after coming off omeprazole.
It’s taken almost 10yrs going through this until I discovered Dr Berg on CZcams after some research. He suggests taking Betaine HCL with pepsin, and bile salts / gallbladder support with pancreatic enzymes to get the body to start digesting food and move bowels. Depending on how bad the situation is you may need to do this for a while as the body recovers.
I must say, PPIs are the most dangerous drugs especially when prescribed Willy nilly just for every acid reflux case. It took one of the doctors to tell me, I think you need to stop, these drugs are not good taking them for a long time. I hate omeprazole with a capital H 😡🤬

I took PPIs for weeks after having reactive gastritis from taking too many NSAIDs. Now I have really slow gastric emptying. The doctor said it could be idiopathic Gastroparesis, for which there is no cure. It's odd that I've never had this before, but after PPIs my stomach is mess. How long does it take for acid to return after taking PPIs for about 6-7 weeks? I took a few different types on and off and my gastritis came back

Hi! Thank you so much for your video! That info is gold! Do you recommend any doctor who works online? I'l live on Germany. Unfortunately I'm doing though a very bad moment with my health. I was having mild reflux during the night, and I started taking omeprazol in February. 1 week. Then 2 weeks in March. Then when I stoped the pain was as I never experience before. I came back to it, but this time I was prescribed Pantoprazol. I stayed with it for 5 weeks, reducing the dosis. I never felt good, but as I was reducing the dosis, the symptoms were coming back stronger. When I was to the lowest dosis, I ended up in the hospital 4 days. Then I got full dosis 4 days, and then they asked me to stop to have a pH metric. I've been off for 10 days, and I'm feeling miserable. I came to the realization that I might have lower acid and I have been taking antiacids for months. I'm also Fructose, lactose and Sorbitol intolerant and that makes everything more difficult :(. I've lost almost 10 kilos, I'm feeling week, dizzy, my Body aches + plus constant heartburn, painful feeling on my Belly. I had an endoscopy, colonoscopy, abdominal MRI and Scans. Everything came good, they found no clue of acid reflux, no hernia, no Pylori, or anything.

My GI told me that I have acid reflux and to take Pepcid. My stomach constantly growls, and I get these pinching throughout my stomach. I think I have even lost a few pounds. I am so afraid it might be something else. My insurance denied an abdominal CT scan. So I am in the process of fighting to get it approved. Some of the symptoms I hear other people talking about ai am also experiencing some of those same symptoms.

@@jacquelineforde3251 hi, after very difficult months I recovered completely. 🥰 Hang in there. I ended up having SIBO. I got antibiotics, and after 9 months taking PPI and finally came off of them. It took a while though. It wasn't easy at all. I also started seeing a psychiatrist and I started taking care of my mental health.
