Wing Chun Wooden Dummy Basic Drills

  • Here are some basic Wing Chun Mook Jong.. or Wooden Dummy drills.. Double Tan Sao, Wu Sao, Pak Sao and Palm, Fook Sao with Huen Sao and Palm, Kwan Sao and others. In our lineage we do these all with Structure or Body Power.. so not a fast flurry of powerless strikes, but slower strikes with the body alignment. Is it better to be super fast with NO power? or a little slower but with lots of POWER..? You can afford to be slower if you move correctly to centerline. These drills come from Sifu Eddie Chong when He taught the Yip Man Leung Sheung lineage Wing Chun. Sorry about the poor audio, the wind was blowing.. also that day a student and I did feeding drills during a wind storm ..lol.

I'm just an enthusiast-spectator of martial arts; therefore my comments are just a layman's perspective. Having seen so many videos in the past, I can say that the slow step-by-step demonstrations with detailed explanations are much appreciated. I helps immensely gain a better understanding not only of the "how-to" but also the "why" of each step. Other's videos seem like they just want to show off the skill. Your video shows you have a heart to teach the art! Thanks again.

From one Leung Sheung practitioner to another, I appreciate this video and the fact that you mentioned being "grounded." My Sifu's main focus is on being rooted, which I imagine is a synonym for what you're discussing here.

Hi Shannon. I enjoyed the way you are explaining this. Wing Chun has made it possible for me to walk again. Hey, without falling down several times a day or week. Accidentally found Sifu Sam Chan, (raised from 8 yrs old) by both Ip Chung and Ip Ching very proud to have bought my DVD's from him. Like the ol timer, Ip Ching, said, "If you treat Wing Chun as medicine, it will last forever." Looking forward for more insight from my friend.

Jay .. Wing Chun saved me when i got run over by a truck as a pedestrian.. and also on my motorcycle when a truck pulled out in front of me.. so sometimes the principles and structure of Wing Chun comes in handy more than for self defense..

Rarely see this kind of Wing Chun explaination. The elbow and the wrist are the key drving force of Wing Chun power. Please practise Wing Chun as demonstrated.

This is a very good video when it comes to form, structure, and being grounded. The only comment that I take issue with is when the instructor stated that standalone wooden dummies was a waste of money. I’m sure he’s aware that the original wooden dummies were and are standalone and was planted in the ground. Other than that miss-statement I feel his video was very informative.

a stand alone dummy doesnt have recoil or move from force pushing or pulling and you need that for jut sao and lop sao training as well as putting force into it.. ive been doing Wing Chun since 1990 so i wouldnt call that a mistatement at all..

That was good !! see alot of dummy practitioners with there spaghetti arm slappy, tappy pattycake method, scared to bruise a forearm or a knuckle, and trying to use, too much speed to cover for bad form.

Good description of power from the stance (root) rather than upper body! Still, you have too much shoulder! Lower the dummy a little so that you don’t have to reach up?
