I think people also forget that some of these gadgets are helpful in other ways... like disabilities, injuries, and children.
I loved some of these (and similar ones) while my kids were growing up and I couldn't yet give them a knife.
And when I need to wrap my wrist, these can keep the wrap cleaner and use less motion.
Yeah, that's the problem with abled people testing these. They don't think of how it could make a simple task easier because they think their way is the easiest. I don't know who it is but they review these types of products from the perspective of how much effort and coordination it takes to use them. He also says about how to improve the product even more.
@@apolloandwarrior_3229hes not allowed to share feedback?
There is an able bodied guy who tests kitchen gadgets as an able bodied person then oils his hands up [to make it more difficult for people who may be old or too young or have nerve issues thus having trouble getting a firm grip on them] then tests them again and gives his opinion on how to redesign the gadget to be more "Disabled Friendly" cause he designs kitchen gadgets for a living. I will see if I can find the channel. I think you'd like iy.
@@cheirrman the problem is the gadget isn't made for them, they are viewing it from the perspective of an abled person and not trying to think of how this could be used by disabled people.
@@apolloandwarrior_3229 is it the one who reviews them with oiled hand tests? I find that person's opinions on this more valid than normal people. Sadly I forgot their channel too XD
Random thing,
I remember watching this guy few years back and now this guy is the most useful food gadget reviewer to me
I like to think these would be best in a specialised or dedicated kitchen to preparing food for others than a home kitchen. Home kitchens only have so much storage space, average sized kitchens will only have a few cupboards and drawers to store tools, where professional kitchens with need for more time save, can afford to be much bigger and will only need a handful of them for speciality dishes, will get way more use out of them.
I actually have the Potato Peeler Gadget, and while it isn't faster than your cutting, it's way less effort and the long strands are way easier to clean up afterwards.
And WAY more safe than using a knife or a peeler
Plus you can do something else while the potato is peeling
You could actually still bake or fry the peels as well
@수키 suki tbh, not so dumb
@수키 suki if its just 3mm its like a little bit of flesh, so maybe...it was just a carelessness
I have had to use a knife to open a can before.

Or you buy cans with a pull top , since we live in the 21st century
I’ve read through almost all the comments and all the ones judging him about how you clean them how much space they take up it’s so many likes but the people who actually enjoy this video and see the usefulness in it get barely any likes
The gadgets are meant to reduce the labor cost of a specific thing, and that's not a failure on their part, but the opposite; it's exactly what they're meant to do. Personally, I prefer a knife, because I can have a single knife block as opposed to having a dozen specified machines. It all comes down to personal preference, which, shocking, is something unique to everyone. Thanks for the video, Dave!
Be good if you factored in the cleaning time for each gadget, and the space that they take up in the cupbourds.
Also which one is less manual labor because that’s a big buying point too
And the price, also knifes have a lot more uses than a gadget, a gadget just does one thing
Edit: I think the word would be ‘versatile’
he did factor in cleaning
@Stezika15 like the fry maker is pretty worth it. If you are going to make fries you probably want to make a big batch and I'd rather use the fry press than a knife. The rest of the tools seem kinda pointless. Problem using gadgets for herbs is that they generally only do one type of cut/mostly smashing. Also sharpening any kitchen gadget with weird shaped blades seems like a pain.
@@wubbin no, no he didn’t,
what people forget sometimes is that sometimes gadgets no matter how silly and gimmicky they seem can make things easier for people with grip or limited power in their arms or hands, depending on each individual, and day to day as some of their grip/power might be better some days than others. also some of these gadgets could be a good way of introducing children to cooking in a safer way.
That is probably only reason for existance of most of those gadgets.
People who comment that "knife is better" never think of other situations where a knife is not as viable or safe than the gadgets.
Like duh, of course it'd be faster if you use a knife, you have two normally functioning hands, clearly it's not made for you, get over yourself.
@@burneraccount7831 So the knife is better for 99.9% of the population. Got it.
@@burneraccount7831 People point it out because it's not being marketed as "unable to do this normally because of a disability?" it's instead marketed as "is your IQ lower the the temperature of the Arctic and are you a danger to yourself performing everyday tasks? Here's some overpriced single-purpose garbage."
@@burneraccount7831 but you forgot. The gadgets also need ur hands and strength.
Not just that but these gadgets are harder to clean and they are usually only for 1 type of ingredient.
You have to factor in the storage space for all the gadgets, how long it takes to collect all the pieces from random drawers and assemble them and then how long it takes to wash everything and store it again. In my experience it is usually only worth taking out some gadget if you need to cut large amounts of something or want very uniform pieces.
Yes, having large amounts of food to cut should be the only reason to use kitchen gadgets, if you use them even if you're just cutting 1 piece of food you're just lazy.
Though you are correct, some people use the gadgets simply to make more "uniform/accurate" or "good looking" cuts, as shown at the gadget that was used to peel off potato skins.
Yes. Turn bedroom. Dodge charger
My favourite(Favorite) kitchen gadget is that table it can open just about any canned 1-3 knocks and boom you got an open canned.
Most if not all of them could be considered for use by the disabled, elderly, or kids. I'm not too keen on using a knife unless I really have to due to epilepsy. So a tool that reduces the need to use one and lowers risk of injury is very welcome.
It's honestly amazing how many various gadgets and products are actually designed for disabled people, and are just advertised to the general public in hopes of capitalizing on the curb-cut effect
@@stomyn To be fair I can kind of see why. If you aim a product at a specific audience people outside that tend to avoid them. So casting a wide net will often yeld a better catch. I just wouldn't mind a "great for the elderly/disabled" label/symbol on the box. Something to tell people "oh you can use is but its made to help your aging relative who keeps asking you to open the tin of soup because they can't."
That is absolutely understandable. I don't have any issues with using a knife myself, so I find the saved space more than worth the extra hassle, but if a knife is unsafe for regular use (for any reason) then better to just have the gadgets.
@@stomyn If it wasn't targeted at larger audiences, we might not have those at all. That's sad but how it is.
Hello
There's a lot to consider here besides time.
1. How much kitchen space do you have
2. How often are you going to use it
3. Is perfect cutting important to you
4. Are there children in the home
(some of these are child friendly while knives are not)
5. How easy is it to clean
And how long it lasts, I find these breaking easily. Also you cannot sharpen these.
@@taleabriggs2249 good point
how about what's your budget, a knife costs like 5$ while these gadgets only work on one fruit and vegetable, a knife is cheap and universally available

Dave is so good with kids "Im cutting as fast and safe as possible"
I've worked in a couple professional kitchens and my favorite gadget was a Univex 20lb vegetable peeler. It was about the size of a 5 gallon bucket and it had a rotating bottom that had an aggressive grit to it. One would put in whole washed potatoes, run some water into the basin, and turn the machine on for a few minutes. Once the side gate was opened you'd have perfectly peeled potatoes come falling out.
I don't think a knife is always faster just more versatile, which you proved.
gadgets are very much more efficient when it comes to working in a kitchen because you usually have do thing in bulk versus cooking in a home kitchen where you are only making enough for you and your family.
My favorite was the Bass-o-matic. The original hasn't been in production for about 40 years. Luckily there are many off brand imitations.
Knife is easier to clean, can be used for many things and barely takes up any space. These gadgets are often good for heavy duty work, but if you only have to do small portions it's better to mainly stick with a knife and a few other small, easy-to-clean tools.
These gadgets are certainly useful for people with dexterity issues

The cleaning alone makes the knife more worthwhile.
Also, when the blades on these gadgets cease being sharp, you'll have a hard time resharpening them.
To be fair to the knife people, you only needed to have one knife. So I guess they were more commenting on the idea that you dont need to buy several different gadgets when a knife will do.
That being said I do have the potato peeler, and I do prefer using it to a manual peeler. Especially because I tend to cut myself with the manual peeler.
I'm surprised you didn't cut both bananas at the same time with a bigger knife, that would've slashed the knife time in half.
You're right, if the goal was to cut 2 bananas into slices. But, the test would be more accurate if you were only slicing a single banana for a dish.
That would be cheating
@@Mornix21201 The test is to see which tool is quicker, if the knife can cut multiple itens at the same time, them why not take advantage of that? The banana slicer can cut multiple slices at once, so why shouldn't he use the knife to cut multiple at once as well?
But if there a difference in banana it wouldn't be straight
Why does doing that feel like a crime
A knife is a single tool.
Also, a professional will win most of those comparisons.
So, it really depends on how many different kind of things you'll be doing, and how skilled you are with a knife.
Average person that will use one or two of these gadgets will benefit from them greatly.
If youre gonna be doing a Lot of things, youll get better with the knife in general and need a Lot of gadgets, If you wont youre gonna get better at doing that one thing really fast, making gadgets obsolete after enough time
If you do one thing a lot of times, it would be great to have the specific gadget for that task.
Especially those Japanese chefs though
The way they're really skilled in their knives , quick and precise
The gadgets are sort of designed for non-professionals tho
@@Ethereal6541 It doesn't really matter how good you get at it, nearly all of these tools do the job very well and require much less effort, with much less room for error.
It's not just about the fact that the gadget is quicker. You have to put away all of those gadgets, which takes up a lot of space, and it'll take you much longer to get it out and set it up when you wanna use it for that specific food. It's also longer to clean. So even though it's quicker and fun, for most of them I wouldn't say they are worth it (nice to have but not needed).
I 'll like your comment
Well dude it doesn’t matter about if it takes up space that’s why you take the time to make space and rearrange
0:17 i deadass heard the kitchen gun for a sec
To be fair, with a potato peeler, I'd imagine the automatic one is still easier to use. It's like trying to compare using an oven to cooking something by hand on a stove. Even in situations where cooking by hand is faster, you still have to be carefully attending and doing work by hand actively, whereas with an oven you can just set it and play video games until you hear the timer go off.
just use a knife 😂
well you still need to load in new potatoes. So you still have to be there watching it. While you can be watching CZcams, you can do that while using a traditional peeler too.
We leave the skins on in my house. My sister hates it but it's my house, kitchen.
Also we could argue that automated peeling time should not be counted, because you could do something else in the meaning. The same as recipes do not could boiling time separately.
@@humanrye8696 That's fair. But i still think the storage space, and set up time still make it inconvenient. That on top of the fact that in the video he used what seemed to be the worst potato peeler he could find lol. Ones that can peel in both directions are much much faster. These gadgets can be cool if you use them all the time. like if you make home made fries multiple times per week.
I think the deciding factor for me I'd storage. If I don't have the space nor a regular use for them, I cannot justify having them in my kitchen.
I used to watch these videos years ago , his voice hasn't changed at all the nostalgia is crazy
"Pretty cool huh"never gets old.
true the knife can been seen as a universal tool in the kitchen, but for some a knife could be very difficult to use, so things like this can help them get back in the kitchen and enjoying cooking again.
Infomercial vibes
Plus these gadgets are safer most of the time.
For this to be a fair comparison, most gadgets should probably include some setup and cleanup time, because it's quite significant compared to the ease of the knife. In the end, I think you'd only ever want to consider a gadget for some specific laborious task that you do a whole lot in your cooking. Like if you make fries all the time, that fry machine looks pretty appealing. (But maybe you shouldn't be eating fries all the time.)
Most just need a quick rinse, just like a knife
For this reason, the garlic one seems most appealing to me. I mince a LOT of garlic, and it’s always a tedious process with a knife. It might be time to invest
@@timothysullivan1669 garlic crusher?
It’ll be much cheaper
that fry cutter is also good for: Tomatoes, onions, peppers, and lots of other veggies and fruits. We used to use something very similar for making diced tomatoes at Papa Johns. the only real difference was that the one we used was operated vertically rather than horizontally
I grate my garlic using a microplane grater. And I don't trim the root as it gives you something to hold onto.
I like how you say, “Pretty cool. Huh?”
The kitchen gadgets are pretty cool and very efficient, but I still think the knife is better for two reasons. 1: The knife is much more versatile. 2: The knife is probably easier to clean. Still, kitchen gadgets are very cool and very useful. 🙂
Not to mention the time it takes to take out each gadget from storage, especially when preparing a dish with many ingredients. I can only see the benefit for the automatic potato peeler, since you can prepare other ingredients while it's running, and you will just have to pause in between potatoes.
Also it's wayy cheaper to just get a knife for all of these tasks, as opposed to buying 5+ gadgets for each and every vegetable
Yup, using the knife is a lot efficient both in budget and maintenance. The good side I like on the other, these gadgets are a life saver for those with dexterity issues..
Yall also forget how much room these mfs take up, plus so many of these gadgets literally can be replaced with one of those cube slicer thingies that I can't remember the name of

I always wonder how long these gadgets stay sharp. A really sharp knife makes things like cutting tomatoes a lot easier. You saw the gadget already had some trouble with it sometimes.
Those potatoe peelings could probably be fried up as some quick shoestring fries.
I really feel like the herb mincer is the best one on the list cause of how fast it minces iy
the French fries cutter is also good
The garlic mincer was pretty handy as well. I use garlic everyday so it would help me out
@@0m3gA_o3 I personally found that knives make better quality fries than really uniform stuff. I mean yeah, similar shaping is cool, but authentic stuff you’d get at your grandmas house is done by knife, and just feel different for some weird reason.

I have a really b̶a̶d̶ good idea.
You need to poke a big hole in one side so it goes inside WAIT THIS IS CZcams NOT-

I think for me the biggest time waste with the gadgets wouldn't be actually using them, it would be in taking them out, and in cleaning them. I have very limited space so they'd definitely go in awkward places, and most of these probably couldn't go in the dishwasher like a knife. Makes a lot of sense for something you have every day, though
You shouldn’t be putting your knives in the dishwasher either. Table knives are one thing, but prep knives should always be hand washed.
@@mimikyutuber6490 It's not great for them, but you can get pretty dishwasher resistant knives. I'm disabled, so it's a consideration already in the buying stage
When you factor that in, they're basically all wins for the knife unless you're doing this thing a LOT. And yet even professional kitchens usually don't use professional versions of these devices, they use knives. There's a reason for that.
@@bill_the_duck it helps that in professional kitchens they are skilled with the knife.
A chef performing the same tasks as shown in the video would probably cut off at least 30 percent of time.

4:50 yooo this is the gadget they use to make slices at school for a pizza party
Yes it is
Those gotta be some thin slices
I understand you’re joking and feel free to ignore this but my autism is screaming to say this
They have to slice them so thin because they’re often paid for by the teacher who doesn’t make much and they have to make sure everybody gets a slice
I think there are still a couple issues with the gadgets:
1. Knives can be resharpened if they go dull. You're not going to be able to resharpen some of these gadgets.
2. Knives take up less space and can be used for a multitude of jobs. If you have a gadget for everything, you're going to run out of space.
I only have slapchop type tool for easy chopping of veggies. Biggest problem is that I still need to chop the veggies up into smaller pieces so I can use the dicer.
Whilst the gadgets might be faster, a knife is applicable to all products, whereas the gadgets apply to usually about 2 or 3.
When I eventually rediscover this channel in like 5 years, i'll be sure to buy these
Watching him chop garlic (with a knife) makes me think part of it could be improved with a change in method (and knife choice at times). There’s a reason chefs don’t tend to keep 50 single-function kitchen gadgets on hand. But it also really depends what knives you have available! I grew up thinking chopping food was ridiculously tedious because my mom mostly had steak knives and only a couple were really sharp. Most were never the right tool for the job.
Fast forward to adult me, with a set of knives I really like, and I actually enjoy prepping vegetables often times! Sure, quartering small, individual items (like grape tomatoes) is still mostly a chore, but dicing an onion or mincing garlic is much better with a proper knife.
However, as others have said, if you lack the grip strength or coordination a gadget could be a better choice.
True true, mincing the garlic if he use the proper technique how to use it a.k.a smashing the garlic and chopping it to make it minced since that’s how you properly mince garlic
You don't chop garlic with a paring knife, but a cooks knife.
smash it first with the side of the blade, then chop it with a rocking motion.
When you include cleaning time, the knife is far faster.
@@kamijoutouma5362 I just started cooking and that garlic cutting caused me pain

The best vid ever! Just how close you came to your fingers with the knife made me a little nervous. You need a finger guard. LOL!
Honestly the gadgets are more fun to use, and in my opinion makes them better
That potato peeler is awesome. The manual peeler may have been a bit faster, but the thing is you can just hit the button and do something else. Tiny bit longer on the peeling, but so much faster overall while you're getting 2 things done at once. And the peel left on the ends could just be cut off before you stick it on the spikes
Manual peeler is much faster than it's shown here, I can peel a potato in about 10-15 seconds, depending on the size. Only top and bottom remain with a bit of skin, and I always cut those off either way.

I have a food processor that I barely ever use, unless I'm going to chop up a lot of stuff. It's hard to get stuff out and a hassle to clean. A knife and a cutting board you get everything off and cleaned very quickly, and you can use them for everything you're preparing, not just the stuff you want to have chopped finely. A lot of these tools are VERY specific. Imagine making a dish with herbs, garlic and tomato and using three gadgets, in addition to a knife (or even more gadgets) you'll use for other ingredients. For the average person getting one good, sharp chef's knife and getting handy is in my opinion way more valuable than getting a tool for every ingredient. Of course these kind of tools are great for kids or disabled people. They require less finesse and are often safer to use, so that's a big plus.
Even if the automatic potato peeler is slower, I personally think it makes up for the opportunity cost benefit of using that time to prepare a different ingredient for your dish at the same time it's peeling your potatoes
That is a big thing that people don't quite get about automated gadgets in general; so many people have this issue with dishwashers, that they take a long time and hand-washing is faster. That's true in a pure dish-turnaround sense, but the actual time I spend doing each means the dishwasher wins, cause all the time that the machine takes is time I'm doing something that's not dishes.
@@stevencowan37 Right? Exactly!
It's essentially having an extra hand in the kitchen. And hey, since it's technically a tool and not a living being full of thoughts, a personality, and opinions- the adage 'Too many chefs in a kitchen' doesn't apply!
Some of the gadgets don’t really seem to warrant the space they take up, like the banana or hotdog cutters. Others, like the potato peeler, the potato cutter, and the herb mincer seem like they would be worth getting. Good video, Dave.
Personally I use a food processor instead if the mincer or garlic mincer. It does the same jobs faster and with less separate tools.
I guess the banana and hotdog cutters would be useful for a small business like a food truck
1:02
Fun fact, 1 minute and 40 seconds is exactly how long a jackpot lasts in jujutsu shenanigans
you should include time to CLEAN these gadgets too! LOL started typing this at 1:58 and then at 2:05 you actually mention the cleaning factor! Good work
The potato chipper is a good tool if you have to chip up a lot of potatoes but it is not a great design. The commercial ones I have used set up on the edge of the workspace and drop the chips into a tub below it. They are also secured to the table / counter so they don't shift around while in use. I have had to run 160 potatoes through one and it was a snap. At home I cut chips with a knife and it takes me a minute to cut up 3 potatoes into equal sized chips.
The one we have is like a box with blades on the top and no bottom so you can access the potatoes easily, with a piece that goes over the box to push the potato through the blades. Not the best if you're making a lot, but definitely works well for a small group. Easy to clean too
Great comparisons. I'm not allowed to sharpen my knives because every time I do I cut my fingers somehow. Some of these gadgets are really cool but much longer to clean than a knife. I guess it's a toss up and comes down to personal preference in the end .
tip for mincing garlic, use salt as an abrasive but don’t go too long and you’ll end ip with a paste.
These gadgets becomes more useful the more you have to use them in one sitting. Cooking for large groups saves ton of time opposed to small families or singles.

idk why but this guy is so relaxing
I say you give the win to the potato peeler. Time wise, the hand peeler may have been a touch faster, but I also considered ease and how bad that dang peeler cramps my hand! 🙂
The potato peeler and fry cutter made a lot more sense than the others. Though honestly some of that really could just be preference. I think the idea of being able to choose how to slice your tomatoes or hotdogs is a wonderful thing.
Dave's voice is so calming and I love watching him test products
The knife is the all rounder for cutting.
Having declared my dissatisfaction with this sharpener last night czcams.com/users/postUgkxDcr-y2Pf6xdnrFHrSP7dl9kpKaCozcSQ I thought about the problem some more. It occurred to me that I might be undoing each attempt at achieving a sharp edge by the repeated attempts. So, I tried to clean up the unsatisfactory result by honing with only positions 3 and 4.Miracle!! A really nicely sharpened chef's knife, more than enough to handle my needs. Admittedly, it did not reach professionally sharpened razor-fineness, but it is now significantly sharper than it was. A bout of breaking down carrots convinced me. So, major apologies to the manufacturer, Amazon, and all happy and potential owners! Follow the directions: don't buy it if you have ceramic blades; and don't overwork your knife blade.
it's crazy I've legitimately been watching this man for the last decade and he's still doing the same thing as good as always
I love your comparisons! Although I think a knife takes a lot less space, is easier to clean, and can do all the jobs well. If you were trying to be as fast as possible, then the kitchen gadgets will come to use.

I like the kitchen gadgets more it’s more craft with you then just using something that you cut with
If I'm mincing garlic I would use a garlic press, which is simpler and less messy than the gadget. The one I have just rocks back and forth over it.
Big advantage of the knife over everything else is it’s capable of doing all of the jobs while taking up significantly less space. You need a whole cabinet or deep drawer for all this stuff OR a knife that takes up 1/100th of a shallow drawer. Also cleaning is just wiping it with a sponge or putting it with everything else in a dishwasher.
Never put a chef knife in a dishwasher, it dulls the edge. You want to hand wash them.
I watch your vids every day and I enjoy them all like the one with the square egg 🥚 and the tomato slicer and the potato peeler
Ok the hot dog one made no sense at first but now I need it
Kitchen Tip: When finely chopping herbs with soft stems, try folding them or balling them before cutting, it helps decrease the number of passes.
After a few tries you'll pick up the skill pretty quick and after a few days you'll be doing 1 or 2 passes to get a fine chop.
I LOVE the potato peeler, my wrist hurts after like 2 potatoes...but it also works for apples and anything else you can stick on there! Great for doing many.
I really love kitchen gadgets, but I just like to satisfyingly watch myself cut bananas and other stuff with a knife. It's fun that way.
I think a lot of these devices would be good for old people, or people who have trouble with knives :D pretty cool
4:17 those are literally french fries😂😂😂
Oh yea
It’s a French fry cutter what u expect
They are chips
6:27 well, you could just put the side of the knife on garlic piece and hit it. After, just cut it a bit and you're done. I believe it will take about 5 seconds per piece.
I love you Davehax! 6:55
As someone that does everything one handed, the potato pealer and the fry maker are in my kitchen. I would buy them again if they broke.
Very interesting! Also one should never forget some of these gadgets are great for kids who wanna help cooking but can't use a sharp knife yet or disabled people. I once heard the saying that if you can't see the use of something it's not meant for you, I think it was a bagel cutter that was talked about.
A disabled person can lug around and wash up massive potato slicer, as well as pushing the lever, but can’t use a knife!?
@@boarbot7829 It's not always about that, it's also about the safety. A lot of these gadgets are a lot safer to use than a knife as in less or no chances to cut themselves with it
@@boarbot7829 you need to think a bit more broadly. Someone with dexterity issues perhaps shaky hands would be helped a lot by some gadgets
I think more than just time should’ve been tested. While time does play a factor in which is better so does cost of gadgets, efficiency, quality, assembly (if there is any), is it easy to clean, longevity, how easy is it to be stored, does the gadget have more than one purpose meaning can you use it for other items or is it strictly just one specific item, etc.
For the garlic one you can get a jar of sliced garlic at the store
It’s essentially niche gadgets versus an all rounder knife, of course the knife will be more useful all around. Oh and the gadgets seem to have less chance of catastrophic failure
3:34 That’s probably because you also counted the time before putting a potato on the gadget or you were using a swivel peeler which is designed for potatoes. the peeler you prefer (called a Y peeler) is meant for carrots
these gadgets will be very useful for when cooking meals for a big party
I showed so many kitchen gadgets to my mom, but she said she’d still rather do it manually
The way he said “Again”😂😂😂
I think the potato peeler is one for the VAR. It's electric, so you're not really involved except for tops and tails. Still a win for the gadget, I'd say. Those spiral peels look like they'd be tasty deep-fried.
I bet you could peel it again to make super thin curly fries.
Id love more of this type of video!!!
Thanks for the feedback
Same
I mean, you can’t argue that the knives are more versatile. You have kitchen cupboards packed with gadgets. I have one knife
For the tomato thin ding, just use 2 plate with the Tomatos in the middle and cut it^^ Fastest way to half dozen of Tomatos^^
The fourth one I do like, it really makes the cutting easier
