- A couple of weeks ago, we started to record ´UNCHAINED´ by Van Halen. It is with deep sadness that we heard about passing away of Edward Lodewijk „Eddie“ Van Halen on the 6th of october 2020. Our condolences go out to the family.

Whats the rating you're tryna push here? That he can play 30+year old songs that are tabbed and totally mapped out for anyone to learn? 😀 Don't get me wrong, he plays better than ME, but like, Eddie really created stuff 40 years ago that nobody were able to play back then. Same goes with Yngwie some years later. Guys around that time wo also were breaking new ground are by my definition underrated. But are you underrated when you're Satchel? I doubt he thinks so himself.

Satch would never say so, but it's fitting he played on this. Satch is in my top 10 favorite guitarists, if you read his entire background he really is super accomplished and underrated. He can sure sound like EVH to boot! RIP Eddie, go jam with Hendrix man.

@@jamesgagne8766 Correct! Lol I didn't think about Joe Satriani or Louis Armstrong when I posted. Although when I was a teenager and Satriani came out with Satch Boogie, that blew me away as a 19 year old when I had only been playing a few years. I was lucky being a teen in the 80's when all these preeminent modern guitarists came to the forefront of rock and metal. Guys you never think of like Kai Hansen of Helloween and Gamma Ray. Although I do have a huge soft spot for Dave Murray (Iron Maiden) a totally underrated player.
Drewboo 1968 you do know that he was in the best VH tribute with Ralph (a.k.a. Michael Starr) long before Steel Panther. I agree with you here 💯, he’s definitely underrated! R.I.P. Eddie....
When I play VH it doesn't quite sound right and I physically look like I'm working because I am... When Satchel plays VH it sounds perfect and he's totally chill

Satchel’s character in interviews for SP wears me out. I get that it’s an act, but if he stepped out of the gimic he would be that much bigger and recognized for his talent. Or I may be wrong...
@@gzo313 Nope, you are not wrong. I know OF SP, but it's not my bag no matter how talented they may be. It's a gimmick and I am pretty serious about music. That being said, this may be the 2nd or 3rd time I ever heard this guy Satchel play, and after this I am now aware of how good he is.

That is what's wrong with music today. Its not fun .. there's no joy. Its all agenda-driven crap. When I remember EVH I just remember "fun". He loved every second of it and it was legit passion and fun.

Satchel can play anything. He was a music teacher at one of the LA music conservatories, I believe. You know, before the wig and spandex.
Saw them in my home town of Adelaide Australia. Killer band and they were funny as fuck. 42 degrees that day aswell.

Thank you all for the lovely comments! My dad gave me a couple of vinyls and one of them was ´Running with the Devil´ - that changed my life, Eddie´s playing has been a huge influence ever since. Rest in peace Eddie!
For all you guitar players, I transcribed ´Unchained´ today, you can download the tabs for free ► shorturl.at/V9aAa . I didn´t find a good transcription online so I gave it a go. Specially parts like the "Bridge" aren´t notated the way I feel and play it. I hope that helps you out, let me know if you like the transcription. I did my best to transcribe Satchel´s take on this mind blowing solo too, let´s shred some more Van Halen music! :)
This is one of the best tributes to VH I've seen this past week. You guys really did an amazing job here, and totally gave justice to every part of the song. The vocals were on point, the guitar was just about perfect in tone and rhythm, the drums were very good, and the backup harmonies and bass were in the spirit of Michael Anthony! Eddie was absolutely one of the top 3 most influential guitar players in the history of rock music. Hendrix laid the tracks and Eddie drove the train of modern rock guitar. It was because of EVH that everyone started tapping in their solos and playing as fast as they possibly could for an entire decade! One could argue that fast guitar shredding was born in 1978. RIP to the king.

He's legit. Just like a good cover band singer can emulate the original and still make it their own, so does Satchel.

Steel Panther lifts so much from Van Halen that this legit just sounds like a Steel Panther song with Satchel playing it.
Only thing missing is the Alex VH snare sound.
Steel Panther started as a VH tribute band. Ralph Saenz ("Michael Starr") and Russ Parish ("Satchel") were members of The Atomic Punks, a very well known VH tribute/cover band, before starting SP with the other 2 guys.

Saw Russ play in Atomic Punks in Vegas for years. I had a 5150 too and no matter how many times I asked him what his settings/mods were on the amp he always took the time to answer me. One show I noticed a lot more gain and volume coming out of his amp as he had a mod done. He said "ah ha you caught that? Right on dude 🤙!"

Just noticed Satch plays the intro exactly as I did in the early 80s when I was a teenage wanna be EVH. I had no clue what drop D was and never had a whammy bar. Instead I played a Gibson Explorer E2 that weighed more than my amp.

You NEED to hear their new song. It's got some of their normal humor. But it's WAY toned down and it's an amazing tribute to 80's hair metal. I'm telling you, you need to look for it. It's called '1987'
One of my most fond memories was winning this contest in new orleans to go sing on stage with the atomic punks and Russ and the guys were like ... unbelievably supportive and amazing to talk to. Big ole nerds for music at the end of the day and getting to belt out panama with them as my "side men" was just something im going to die loving. They were all super cool about everything and did a nice photo session with me after the show (this was their own idea! I won a silent auction to go sing panama, that was it lol). Russ even waited out side of his bus for me to go get one of my guitars for him to sign, it was like 1am lol.
I was in my very early 20s at the time, I didnt even for a moment consider their time; I was just enamored with the situation. These guys just handled me with outrageous grace and humble behavior I didnt deserve lol. Obviously I was glad to be there lol
