I came out the concert drunk from the music, with the knowledge that I would never witness anythng like this again. How right I have been. A night for the purists. I saw a version of this group in Cleveland at the Zoo amphitheater of all places! Sunday afternoon. If you paid to get into the zoo the concert was free. What a great show. He had Sam Rivers on saxophone that day along with James Moody and Slide Hampton. Just a wonderful experience. We went early and sat in the front row during the sound check and tried to talk to Dizzy. He was very nice but wouldn't engage with us until he started playing.
I think this concert has the best drum solos I have ever heard. The drummers make something of huge technical skill seem as effortless as blinking. Lovely warm audience too.
