    Interesting tests. Questions: (1) Which version firmware did you use in this test? v2.0? v2.1? (2) Also it would be great to know the apertures you were shooting with. Were you generally shooting wide open? (3) When you looked at the images on computer did the the focus hold up? (4) how does the eye autofocus do in lower light? (5) The final test you did was not in wide area autofocus (I think) but I don't believe that eye or face finding works outside of wide area autofocus currently. I could be wrong, please check this. Thank you.

    Thanks for this great video, I’m thinking of getting a mirrorless body but since I already own a lot of Nikon gear I really didn’t want to go with a different brand, since a lot of reviewers have called for other brands to be better for video and stills when it comes to mirrorless.

      @@dhyogofotografia Why go backward? The Sony is flimsy with no weather sealing, inferior video, horrible egonomics, poor handling, made with much lighter gauge materials, less connectivity, high ISO non-defeatable raw noise reduction detail is lost, color that is inferior and uses unreliable SD cards instead of the modern PCIe+ bus XQD and soon to be updated for ProRes RAW 12 bit video. There are lots of reasons to select the Z6/7 over Sony and its poor support. Ask any camera repairman, which is more rugged and repairable. The tiny Crop sized flange means lenses are more expensive and weak in corners.
      The Z cameras are using the largest flange and shortest distance in the industry so simpler lower-cost lenses can be built that outperform Sony corner to corner. The cheap materials used by Sony work for the warranty period but in a year you will need to update to newer versions so assure you have a working camera. Having to run to indoors every time it starts to rain is also a real weakness of Sony, which, to increase profits, is the only camera in the industry without weather sealing. The lenses are not sealed either.

    Thank you for this video. I was thinking I would wait for Nikon to make the next version of Z6 before I buy it so I could get the eye detection that the Z50 has, but now I see they can just do updates to the firmware. Channel looks good. I subscribed.

    Great vid! Can't wait to get the Z6! How do you feel about the kit lens? Do you think I should include it with the purchase or get the body only and grab another lens... Maybe the Tamron 24-70mm f2.8?

    • @MikeHagen

      The kit lens is very good and very sharp. I have a couple other lenses in the same focal range and think that the better decision is to stick with the z-series 24-70.

    will the D850 get this firmware update to ?

    • @dance2jam
      @dance2jam Před 4 lety

      Ran, I believe (Mike can correct me if I'm wrong) that eye-AF is something only mirror-less cameras can do at this point (and likely into the future). In mirror-less cameras the eye AF is being read via phase detection straight off the main sensor which is always on (something that led to battery life issues early on, and something DSLrs cannot do because there is a mirror in the way). To make this work on moving subjects, Sony (and others) are having to redesign their lenses for faster AF in that constant micro-adjustments of lenses take time especially with traditional, non-linear motors. A new generation of cameras are on the horizon. Hold onto your seat because the winds of change these days seem to be blowing much faster. Mike, I'm impressed that you got so many in focus sharp shots with the 200-500 mm f/5.6. By the way, did I hear a buffering problem? Nikon, get your act together.

    • @dance2jam
      @dance2jam Před 4 lety

      @@ranweinstock3792 Completely agree Ran. I own the D850 and I'm not going to give it up just yet. There are a number of issues with SONY - Menu system, sensor dust, ergos that are real issues. I can quickly customize my D850 buttons and change them along with options on My Menu. I am a bit envious of my SONY friends enough to tell someone new to photography to go SONY. I agree about the a9ii. Problem is that all cameras have a particular asset (i.e. Fuji film, Olympus, Canon, Sony). So it's best to keep your eye on what works for you and to remember new bodies come at a premium but quickly devalue (i.e. Sony a7Riii).

    • @dance2jam
      @dance2jam Před 4 lety

      @Monster Fueled Thanks and appreciate the added information. As far as existing cameras though (i.e. D850) I don't believe that technology will be retrofitted. Perhaps future generations of DSLRs (if there are some) will incorporate that just as mirror-less cameras are incorporating mechanical shutter features to avoid rolling shutter etc. Definitely an interesting time in photography.
