This video shows you how to play the vanguard tactically. I demonstrate several tactics a vanguard can use to steamroll insanity. Even though the video is a tutorial and not a speed run, the run is completed in under 4 minutes showing that a tactical vanguard can clear an area very fast without taking any damage. The final battle of the video is unnecessary as you can just run to the final button, however I stay to fight to show how a vanguard can still be a very powerful ranged biotic combatant when charging is risky.
This video uses the Pull/Barrier Build for a Vanguard. This is a good build however is inferior to the reave build (in my opinion). To watch the reave build in action you can watch my other videos.
The following is a brief list of some of the tactics I employ during the video:
-Use cover like all other classes (used repeatedly throughout the video, good example is at 0:57)
-Flank enemies with charge by charging a rear or side enemy (watch 1:48 for a flank of the harbinger)
-Use charge to knock back one enemy and shoot the one next to him (Used repeatedly, 3:36 is a good example)
-Charge can also be used to make you invulnerable to projectiles which are coming at you.
-Any time your shields have dropped and you are exposed (not safe behind cover) you need to charge.
-Charge in, gun down one enemy then take cover. Learn how to immediately take cover after a charge kill. (The battle at 3:44 is a good example)
-Most importantly, do not force a bad charge because you think that you have to charge since you are a vanguard. (Final battle at 3:55 is a good example of when not to charge)
-Use warp explosions set off by a pull as your most damaging ranged biotic attack, it is perfect for when charging is a bad idea. (Used repeatedly, especially at final battle at 4:05 and 4:17)

Yeah I kinda realized if you want insanity Vanguard a little bit easier you should choose the 8-shot gun as your main weapon and not the claymore, because inferno ammo is something that can give almost anything a good performance.. But let me be honest, I can't resist that big gun and chance to play DOOM in Mass Effect 2.
As for the additional skill, biotic skill are the best of course.....I used to choose reave all the time but then I realized why the hell I need to reave someone from range instead of just charging at them. Slam seems to be the right answer but Vanguard could live without any additional skills. Team cryo ammo is good too.
In this video I am using pull to set up warp explosions, and the Drell has warp. My armor is mostly shield boosting armor, with the power boosting shoulders.
Interesting that you're using the scimitar. I was under the impression that the general consensus is that the Eviscerator or Claymore are the shotguns of choice for Vanguards.
@TheLateNightGamer Scimitar shotgun gets a lot of ammo compared to other shotguns, it's the one he's using and is found in Samara's recruitment mission. The ammo is also boosted by the shotgun ammo upgrade attainable after buying so many shotgun damage increaser upgrades.
amazing playstyle... real fun to watch. i wonder how to create good testing environments for different builds, without having to play everything over and over again...
I didn't think much of your strategy in the beginning, as I didn't agree with some charges. Towards the end you really did almost everything right. Persuaded me to hurry up and finish my adept playthrough and do a vanguard :P They look really fun
You absolutely destroyed that, good vid
@bluntorc IMO Cryo Ammo's slightly better than Pull, since it not only recharges faster, your shots freeze and immobilize enemies so they can't shoot you - useful for Vanguards since CQB players inevitably get shot a lot. Plus you can always use your squad members' Pull against targets of your own choice, but if you give them an ammo power you can't direct their shots.
The scimitar really owns as a pure DPS weapon. I was using the GPS but honestly, the increased range is a 'meh' benefit, even though it has a higher theoretical DPS and higher overall damage per "full hit" than any of the other shotties. The Scimitar is just more fun. THough I'm considering trying out the katana, since before I just ditched it after Freedom's progress.
At hardcore, warp detonations are hard to setup with little reward. By the time defenses are stipped, they die.
I just love your gameplay man thats sick!!! O_o
@020stevenleu IF you have the Eviscerator (3 shots in the magazine, nearly as much damage as Claymore. Free DLC), go Assault Rifle(personal preference) or Sniper ELSE take a look at the Claymore (1 shot per reload, but FOR MASSIVE DAMAGE). Keep in mind that the pattern with the Evi is Shot, Melee, Shot, Melee.
Why is there so little love for the Scimitar? I always thought that if I need to reload in enemy territory I am doing it wrong. His visor does throw me off though.
Very Nice video.
Damn, gotta finish my 3rd Mass Effect run so I can do my 7th Mass Effect 2 run. That's what you get for switching Gamertags once you get Live instead of actually remembering to upgrade your current account. I miss the Vanguard.
Vanguard+ Shotgun kicks absurd amounts of ass..doing my first Insanity run using Vanguard for the first time...and having a ball!
How come your Scimitar is so accurate even at medium range? Incredible!
duude that was ownage. thanks for posting that. nice combo.
How are your squad mates using cryo ammo when you have inferno ammo active?
How on Earth do you have enough shotgun ammo? Whenever I use my Geth Shotgun or any other shotgun for that matter I run out of ammo rather quickly.

Thane: "Go in peace"
moar liek go in pieces amirite?
@nuttyandre Squad cryo ammo, and personal incendiary ammo (inferno).
Just a question, what weapon should I get from Advanced Training if I'm playing this class?
how are you freezing and puting them on fire?
what shotgun were you using?
@020stevenleu I think assaultrifle would go good...
@RaikiriPiercesAll ...... i love you.
@iOnlySignIn PC Mouse targetting.
Vanguard is extremely hard
Just charge, blast, rinse, repeat.
Niiiice
To much shotgun to little charge
4:28 that was fucking Incredible!!!!
And people say vanguard isn't fun.
Total annihilation.
can someone pleazse expain what is pull, barrier, overload, shield (i think its armour), warp
